Ryan Blaney looks to carry Penske's speedway success into ... (NASCAR on NBC Sports)

Ryan Blaney learned tips about speedway racing by listening to Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano discuss it. Blaney seeks his first Daytona 500 win today.

Blaney saw Logano and Keselowski win seven of 16 races at Daytona and Talladega from 2015-18 before he won the fall Talladega race in 2019. That’s what Blaney has done, first when when he was at the Wood Brothers, an affiliate of Team Penske, from 2015-17 and then at Penske after 2018 when he moved over to the No. “That’s really where you want to be at these plate tracks. “But, more often than not, it doesn’t and you can control some of these races. “I’m not any of these other guys I’ve ever raced against, but I’ve looked at every one of them and seen what they’ve done and tried to add some things to what I do on top of just learning naturally and having experience and learning who you are and what your makeup is. You might make some good moves, but if everyone knows what you’re going to do, they’re just going to block. He’s won a series-high three of the last 13 races at Daytona and Talladega. Blaney is among the favorites (along with Logano) in today’s race. That organization has won at least one race at Daytona or Talladega each season for the past nine years. You just have to kind of figure it out. “It was very neat, very insightful. It wasn’t in the No.

Daytona 500, NASCAR 2023: 10 predictions you shouldn't take to ... (mlive.com)

DesOrmeau: This reminds of those restaurants that have a KFC and a Taco Bell in the same space. Hamlin is at the top of his game, but hasn’t had the luck to boost him over the hump. He’s one of the best drivers to never win a championship – but not for long. And I agree, Ben, the other Kyle (Busch) should be next. But with so much parity, I don’t see either making the playoffs unless they can steal a win at a superspeedway (like Daytona). DesOrmeau: Last year was the first season without a Michigander in the playoffs since 2013. DesOrmeau: I have the same safety concerns, Ben. On the flip side, I see Alex Bowman struggling this year – he seems to be the weakest link at Hendrick Motorsports. Now that they race for competing manufacturers, I could see things getting spicy in a hurry if either ever feels slighted by the other. Fans have been told for years that the short track would never reopen – but lo and behold, money can fix a lot of things. I bought my tickets and pit passes early, and a friend from the East Coast is even flying in. DesOrmeau: Underdogs have done well at Daytona throughout the years.

On Lap 38, he pitted for two right-side tires and fuel and got back into the top five on Lap 53. He slid back a bit over the course of the run, with a stop for fuel only setting him up for a surge into the top 10 on Lap 113. He restarted 11th in the outside lane with six laps to go in the stage and drove to seventh to end the stage. Using the inside line, the 27-year-old was in the top five on Lap 22. He bid his time in the back of the top 20 before pitting for two right-side tires and fuel on Lap 38. He spent the opening 16 laps in the top 10. That brought him to the edge of the top 10 with eight laps in regulation and he was scored in eighth coming to the first overtime attempt. Following the pit stop, he moved into the top 15 and was up to seventh on Lap 52. He retook the lead on Lap 11 for two laps and again on Lap 21 for three laps. He expertly dodged "The Big One" in the first overtime attempt to move into the top 10. That race marks the final one for the Fontana, California, track as a 2-mile facility and also serves as the first of three races in a row on the West Coast. "We were trying to put ourselves in the right position and we were in a really good spot there with about two to go and running third before that caution (on Lap 199)," Byron said.

Results and points standings after the 65th Daytona 500, which Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won for the first time in his NASCAR Cup Series career.

We were kind of in a bad spot in the pack to get caught up in something. Once he got off center, I tried to back up but I had (Brad Keselowski) in the back of me trying to push as well. I hate that we didn’t get to the finish line, but we got a lot closer than I thought. This package is pretty tough to pass with, but it was fun to be up there battling in the top 10 there for a bit.” [Austin Dillon](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48393/austin-dillon) — Finished 33rd: “We had a strategy there, and it just didn’t play out. I feel like when the 22 pulled up in front of me I tried to slow down to engage him and I got hit by the 8 really hard and send the 22 three-wide and we lost momentum again. The outside just didn’t really get rolling and we didn’t get organized very well and by the time we did it was just a little too late. [Kyle Busch](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48221/kyle-busch)) went to the bottom there, I was able to push ( [Joey Logano](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48369/joey-logano)) and ( [Kyle Larson](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48450/kyle-larson)). It was amazing that we were able to put it in the top 20. We recovered and we are getting better at this kind of racing and we are going to get one of these one day.” [Ryan Blaney](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48406/ryan-blaney) — Finished eighth: “You know, unfortunately getting tore up in the second stage and I thought we did a good job fixing it and staying in it and got a couple of laps back and were able to get it driving decent enough to where we lined up in the top-15 and were able to miss some wrecks and finish okay. It was a win, and it was awesome. I was hoping we were going to get to the white there, and we didn’t, so I knew I was going to take the top. I felt like the three wide was going a hurt a lane; looked like Kyle was getting pushed ahead, and then Ricky started getting pushed ahead.

Dr. Diandra: Cheer up, Kyle!: Busch far from unluckiest Daytona 500 ... (NASCAR on NBC Sports)

Kyle Busch bemoans his Daytona 500 luck, but bad luck is not his alone. He won't even be the unluckiest driver on track Sunday.

Analysis: Strong Daytona 500 run doesn't quell sting for Kyle Busch (NASCAR)

Kyle Busch led Lap 200 of the 2023 Daytona 500, but a double-overtime crash left the two-time Cup champion stuck without the Harley J. Earl.

“It looked like it was kind of working,” Busch said, “but we got too much separation off of two, and I tried to back up to get to them. Busch ducked from high to low in an effort to link the Nos. The first overtime restart saw Busch control the restart alongside teammate Austin Dillon. “It’s just par for the course,” Busch said. Busch led Laps 197-202 in a race that was scheduled to end at Lap 200. Before Busch could make a move to try and win the race, he was clipped in the left-rear quarter panel and sent spinning driver-side first into the outside SAFER barrier.

He was ultimately collected in a 13-car accident after the first OT green flag, however, and ended up 31st in the final standings. The DAYTONA 500 was a “fantastic” experience for the 39-year-old Pastrana and appears to have provided exactly what he pursued. 4 Ford was among those collected in a seven-car accident with 17 laps remaining, but the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion soldiered on and finished the race. Harvick, 47, who announced he would be retiring from competition at the end of the 2023 season, has had a strong career showing in NASCAR’s premier race. “Honestly just to be in the hunt for a top five at the end exceeded all my expectations," he continued. "I led a lap, but it was by mistake," he said smiling. Just unfortunately when things got tight in there, I wasn’t able to control at the top with a push.” However, a huge multi-car accident in Turn 3 on Lap 1 of the restart changed that plan again and ended up resulting in extra laps and a second overtime that collected Busch’s car in a nine-car incident on the final lap - the race official. But he emerged proud of his NASCAR Cup Series debut and grateful for the opportunity. Travis Pastrana’s DAYTONA 500 adventure ended in a smile, if not a trophy. “I think this is the first time I lead Lap 200, so I wish it was 1998 rules," Busch said. He joked with his RCR crew, “back in 1998 that would have been the win, boys," noting that decades ago the race would have ended under that caution and Busch would have been declared the winner as the leader at the time of caution.

People trying to block the rows are trying to cycle in and I just want to focus on the fact that we had such a fast HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang. Daytona is such a rollercoaster of a race and you just have to be there at the end, and we were there at the end. We talked about what our plan was going into it and felt like we were executing that, but we just needed a little luck at the end to go with it. The race begins at 3:30 p.m. Hopefully, we keep unloading fast Ford Mustangs like we did this weekend and we’ll have some fun.” – Ryan Preece, driver of the No. This opportunity is exactly what I wanted, so it’s unfortunate because I felt like we were going to put ourselves in position to give ourselves an opportunity to be in contention to win this race, but it just wasn’t meant to be. We were strong all day, running up front until we had to check up with the guys starting to wreck in front of us, but they didn’t and we were all strung out until the caution came out. I don’t know, we just all checked up into one and it was a bad wreck for Stewart-Haas because all four of us were stuck in that. ● Ricky Stenhouse Jr., won the Daytona 500 to score his third career NASCAR Cup Series victory and his second at Daytona. The pit crew was on it, and Drew (Blickensderfer, crew chief) and Joel (Edmonds, spotter) were on it, so this 10 team is showing a lot of growth and we’re going to be a strong team all year.” – Aric Almirola, driver of the No. “We were coming off that pit sequence and everybody was at such different speeds and you could definitely tell the intensity was ratcheting up. That wasn’t how I wrote it up, but the Smithfield team gave me a fast car all weekend and we had a car capable of winning.
