Senators' winger Chris Neil a Toronto Maple Leaf? The horror! It ... (Ottawa Sun)

NHL free agency in 2009 nearly turned the Battle of Ontario on its head.

Instead of heading to the Big Smoke, Neil signed a four-year, $8-million deal to keep his toothy grin with the Senators. The reality was Neil didn’t want to leave Ottawa. The two had a history from a 2006 playoff series against Tortorella’s Tampa Bay Lightning, when Neil was a giant pain in butt. New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather had also talked with Reynolds and was willing to match the four-year, $9-million deal that Burke had put on the table for Neil to join the Leafs. The money Neil was being offered wouldn’t have been life-changing because he’d already made a lot in his career, but it would have provided more security for his family. “I said, ‘Did it occur to you that Brian Burke wants to sign Chris Neil?’ That was tough because I had so much respect for Bryan Murray.

Chris Neil naturally chose the home team penalty box from which to salute Senators fans following his jersey retirement ceremony.

"He's not just running out of his way to make sure he gets his hits," Alfie said, during a series against the Rangers. Neil and his wife Cait have been affiliated with Roger's House, a palliative care facility named in honour of the late Roger Neilson, for more than a decade. He came into that series (Game 5) and changed the tone of the series." "Chris, as a player, was a warrior, on and off the ice. He sits 20th on the NHL’s all-time penalty minutes list and is one of only two players in NHL history to compile over 1,000 games and 2,500 penalty minutes while playing the entirety of his career for a single franchise. Neil is one of only three players (with Alfredsson and Phillips) in Senators history to dress in 1,000 games for the club. "And I think that’s kind of how he announced himself to the team ... 25 jersey is the fourth in the history of the Senators franchise to be retired and third of the modern era. 25 for all he has given the Senators and this region. Filmed walking out to the ice from the Senators room, where he donned his Sens sweater for one more time, Neil walked through a phalanx of ex-teammates, with Phillips and Alfredsson the last pair to greet him. And he had to crack a lineup on the right side that included Alfredsson, Marian Hossa and Martin Havlat. All those times he would win a fight and raise his arms to ignite fans in the stands?

Chris Neil, the greatest enforcer in Ottawa Senators history, is now forever No. 25 in the rafters at Canadian Tire Centre.

He came in that series, changed the tone of the series, we beat the Rangers, and Chris had a lot to do with it." "He was obviously cut from a different cloth than the rest of us. "I look back to when he first came and joined our team and where we were as a team," Redden said. "How many players played better because Chris played with them over that amount of time in a real tough era?" "That tells you that he never crossed the line," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said. But the real truth behind it was to let my mom know I was okay."

With 3:05 remaining, Kane scored his second of the night to tie it. “We had three grade “A” looks (in overtime) … “We just made too many turnovers to finish off the game,” said Ottawa forward Brady Tkachuk. And thanks to that couple of fantastic plays by the top forwards, they did manage to stumble over the finish line to “earn” at least a point in this one, being outshot 32-31 by the end of the game. Of all the ways this game could’ve gone, they did get another point in the standings, improving to 6-1-1 in their last eight games. - Mads Søgaard had a decent outing — in spite of the .875 save percentage he made several strong saves from close range. Derick Brassard and Shane Pinto led the team in 5-on-5 expected goals % while contributing a point each. They shot themselves in the foot multiple times in that third period. This third period was a perfect demonstration of how a clutch goaltender can turn the tide of a game. I’m sure a lot of us expected the opposite interaction to occur a bit more often. And with under 10 minutes to go, Artem Zub is tripped up by Tyler Johnson to send Ottawa to the power-play. With 20-25 minutes of hockey left to be played, the Ottawa Senators held their fate in their own hands. And Shane Pinto in particular came fairly close to a tying goal in the first, only to be thwarted by a broken stick lying on the ice from an earlier play. Granted, the Senators did outplay the Blackhawks for a couple of stretches and got some really good looks on Petr Mrazek. I certainly would’ve reached for my phone after that Drake Batherson turnover leading to Patrick Kane converting on a 2-on-0 under a minute into the game.

Inside Chris Neil's genuine and poignant relationship with an Ottawa ... (The Athletic)

An Ottawa family wants people to know what Chris Neil, who is having his number retired by the Senators, means to them and the community.

But when you ask Lawson to list the reasons why Neil is worthy of a jersey retirement, he steers away from his on-ice accomplishments. “That number is going to be up in the rafters forever. Even though Lawson was sitting on the opposite blue line from where the hit occurred, he could feel the impact up in the 300-level of the arena. The next time Neil paid a visit, Matthew made sure he relayed a message of sympathy. “Matthew had his alphabet and he spelled out, ‘I’m sorry’ after he found out that Chris’ mom had died,” said Stephanie. It was on one of those bad days that Chris Neil and his wife, Cait, paid a visit to Matthew’s hospital room. “Chris never hesitated to come in and talk to Matthew directly. And he finished with a flourish, describing his mom’s reaction when he removed his ball cap to expose his botched attempt at a self haircut. Matthew required special permission for a one-day pass to leave the hospital, but his family was desperate to find any way to brighten his mood. That was the beginning for them.” It was during one of his extended stays in Toronto in 2014 that Matthew was first introduced to Chris Neil. “He sees more when he’s at home and watching on television,” says his father, Bruno.

He’s also already at a bit of a disadvantage compared to the others when it comes to the question of longevity, and he isn’t ever likely to be a big point producer. While I said at the top that Tkachuk was my current betting favourite to have his number retired, Stützle is the only one in this group that I believe has a real chance to make it into the Hall of Fame.
