Earlier this week, the Oilers opted to drop down to a minimum-sized roster in order to get cap-compliant to activate winger Kailer Yamamoto from LTIR.
That’s not a viable situation for a playoff contender to have to navigate through for another couple of months before the season comes to an end so there has been an expectation that they will open up some cap space. If he was to be claimed, they’d free up the full $3MM in cap room and if not, the proposed swap with Carolina would open up $1.5MM in regular cap room and $1.5MM (Kase’s cap hit) in their LTIR pool. While that wouldn’t be a great return by any stretch, it would certainly give them a bit more flexibility to work with as they either look to add a piece by the March 3rd trade deadline or to bring someone back up from AHL Bakersfield to avoid having to play short a player as they did last night. It’s also hardly the type of return they were hoping for from someone carrying a $3MM cap hit. Edmonton Oilers continue to have their hands in everything. Three potential trade targets for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The problem the Oilers are running into is teams retaining money for any move they make. One thing is for sure the Oilers want to add to this roster at the deadline. According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Oilers have “broached the possibility” of extending Puljujarvi beyond this season at a lower cap hit. The comment ...
If Puljujarvi was on a deal paying half of what he’s making this season, I’d be willing to bet that the heat he has faced would be a lot cooler than it is. Through the first 28 games of the year, the Oilers were outscored 7-19 with Puljujarvi on the ice at 5×5 as the team controlled just 26.92 percent of the goals scored. They’re at least seeing if Puljujarvi is willing to stick around, and I don’t know if he is at this point. Last year when Puljujarvi scored 14 goals and 36 points in 65 games, he played 16:14 TOI per game, but that number has dropped to 12:29 per game while he’s scored just five goals and 12 points. They are a team that is going to have to create some room by moving a player out.But what’s interesting to me is I’ve heard in recent days the Oilers have at least broached the possibility of extending Puljujarvi instead of just trading him. I don’t think those talks went anywhere, I don’t know where those talks stand at this moment, but a guy that has always seemed on his last day in the city, they’ve at least broached the possibility of seeing if they can extend him. That’s pretty interesting too as we all look to what move the Oilers make to create cap space.
At 24, Philp's window to show he is worth an NHL audition is not large, but he's become an intriguing option.
He did get an NHL audition (22 games, 21 with Edmonton and one with the However, Marody’s play without the puck and foot speed kept him outside the NHL for all but seven games with the Oilers while he was part of the organization. None of the names on this list has been able to establish himself as an NHL player. If no injuries come this season, he may toil in the AHL for the entire year. He has good size (6-foot-3, 198 pounds) and is a solid positional player with and without the puck. At 24, Philp’s window to show he is worth an NHL audition is not large. How is he doing compared to other forwards, age 24, who were pushing for NHL work with the Oilers? Most of those bullet points represent an Oilers need on the NHL roster. Philp played in the WHL during his draft-eligible years and then played another season at age 20 in junior. He missed a full season due to the pandemic, meaning he arrived as a pro player at 24. Ryan has spent much of this NHL season on right wing. Junior players get drafted in their teens, turn pro at 20 and have a three-year entry deal to show what they can do.
Older prospect Philp signed to NHL deal Noah Philp captivated the interest of the Edmonton Oilers on the day they awarded him an NHL contract.
He is efficient in faceoffs and successful in penalty killing, and excels in creating offence at even strength. Nevertheless, he has yet to make his debut in the National Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers have looked at the possibility of extending much-discussed forward Jesse Puljujarvi, according to Chris Johnston.
I don’t know if he is at this point, but I just thought it’s interesting they’ve had that discussion.” Whether it’s someone like Warren Foegele or maybe it’s still Puljujarvi that’s the odd-man out, maybe it’s somebody else they’re trading…they have to remove money from that roster, but they’re at least seeing if Puljujarvi is willing to stick around. But a guy that just always seemed like his last day in the city, they at least broached the possibility of seeing if they could extend him.
