Is Erik Karlsson a realistic trade target for the Oilers? (Yahoo Canada Sports)

GM Ken Holland will have to decide if it's worth sacrificing the team's future to add the two-time Norris Trophy winner to a star-studded Oilers roster.

When he was looking for a new home to continue his National Hockey League career last season, Evander Kane went to the Edmonton Oilers.

“But I must say Evander Kane was very professional and happy to be here. “But I’m not going to sit here and tell you I knew a lot.” “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Arcand said. Kane does not believe he has any Indigenous ancestry, but he welcomed the opportunity to visit Alexander First Nation. Kane is in his 14th pro season. Edmonton is sporting a 30-19-5 record, good for fourth place in the NHL’s seven-team Pacific Division. Kane was told he would eventually receive a pocket-sized honourary status card. Two of Edmonton’s three losses during this stretch were in overtime. He was greeted by about 200 members of the community at the local school, named Kipohtakaw Education Centre. The Oilers do not have any Indigenous players on their roster this season. “It’s a great name. They surprised me with it.”

PRE-GAME REPORT: Oilers vs. Red Wings (NHL.com)

The Oilers return to Rogers Place on Wednesday night to begin a two-game homestand against the Detroit Red Wings. You can watch the game on Sportsnet One ...

the West this season would be their second highest in a season since moving from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference in 2013-14... McDavid needs six points to reach 800 for his career (has recorded six points in a game just once in his career on Nov. That would be the fourth highest PP in a season in NHL history, and the highest in franchise history... Edmonton currently holds the second wildcard spot but are just three points out of the division lead and five points (with a game in hand) out of the conference leading Dallas Stars. "Montreal played a very good game and credit to them, I didn't think were very sharp at all," Woodcroft said. I don't know if there's a Colorado like there was last year, but hopefully we can be that team come the end of the year." We're fighting for the same points to secure a place in the playoffs. There could have been an inclination to ease back into action, but the Red Wings certainly didn't allow that -- and it was a style of game the Oilers were more than willing to oblige in. Or, it can be the towering Vincent Desharnais who showed his eagerness in Montreal to step up for a teammate. It was Warren Foegele, who sat out in the game before the NHL All-Star break, who responded with a goal in his first game back against the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. The Finnish forward was re-inserted into the lineup against the Ottawa Senators and rewarded his coach with the game-winning goal in his 12:18 of ice time. Suter's shootout winner lifts Red Wings past Oilers for fourth straight ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Pius Suter scored the shootout winner as the Detroit Red Wings kept up their second-half surge with a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

The Oilers play host to the New York Rangers on Friday. Edmonton made it a one-goal game just over two minutes later as Connor McDavid sent a one-handed pass across the crease to Nugent-Hopkins, who recorded his 26th goal of the season in his 55th game. Larkin is averaging a career-high 0.98 pints per game this season and is on pace for a career-high 79 points (32 goals, 48 assists) this season, and if he keeps it up would be the first Red Wings player with back-to-back 30-goal seasons since Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg both did so in 2007-08 and 2008-09. He has six goals across the stretch and 21 on the season. "It was a huge team win being up 4-2 and they tied it up and still getting away with two points," Suter said. "We had a couple of breakdowns that they capitalized on," Draisaitl said.

The Oilers should be all in on Karlsson (TSN)

The San Jose defenceman is one of a very small group of skaters whose play could be additive to that of superstar Connor McDavid, Travis Yost writes.

If Karlsson is playing, the Sharks are one of the best teams in the league on the attack – a rebuilding team, I emphasize. When he’s on the bench, the Sharks offence is as hapless as anything you’ll find in Chicago or Arizona. Consider how he has impacted the play of teammates around him in San Jose relative to Oilers defenders and their impact on teammate play this season – I’ve included New York’s Adam Fox and Colorado’s Cale Makar just to underscore the calibre of a player we are talking about here: Playing on an undermanned Sharks team, Karlsson is somehow sixth in league scoring (18 goals and 55 assists in 55 games) and comfortably first across all defencemen. To that end, there is a debate about “fit” with Karlsson in Edmonton. But if there is a deal to be had, I think it’s an easy “yes” for general manager Ken Holland.

Edmonton Oilers suffer shootout loss to Detroit Red Wings (Globalnews.ca)

Despite outshooting the Detroit Red Wings 45-23, the Edmonton Oilers had to settle for a 5-4 shootout loss Wednesday night at Rogers Place.

“A couple tough ones to give up tonight, but things have been going really well lately and you don’t want to lose the momentum from one game. However, the Wings went back in front by two when Olli Maatta fired a long slapper past Campbell’s blocker. “But I thought we were sloppy in some of our details.” Late in the first, Moritz Seider’s centering pass ticked off Philip Broberg and snuck past Campbell to make it 2-0 Detroit. “I thought the guys played a tremendous game in front of me,” Campbell said. Oilers focus on Red Wings as rumour mill keeps churning (Edmonton Sun)

Heading towards the March 3 NHL trade deadline, Edmonton has been rumoured to be a possible landing spot for some big names.

“That said, I do have an opinion and if I’m asked my opinion, it’s one that’s based on my experience and a lot of work in terms of paying attention to what’s happening around the league. “It seems like a few bigger names this year have been linked to the Oilers and that is new. Contrary to popular belief, McDavid is not involved in most player personnel decisions with Holland. Kane helped turn the Oilers’ fortunes around and was a big part of their playoff drive. The Oilers made it to the Western Conference Final for the first time since 2006 last season, and the team is looking for a return trip this year. “The rumour mill is for me and I really enjoy it — I’m really excited about some of the players we have coming to this team, according to you guys.”

Game 55: Detroit at Edmonton When the second period winds down at Rogers Place tonight, not only will the game be 2/3 complete but so will the 2022-23 NHL…

It was Campbell who got the win in Detroit last week, a highly-competitive game that was much closer than its 5-2 scoreline indicated. At some point, the question needs to be asked: is Ken Holland playing 4-dimensional chess, or is he secretly trying to invent a teleporter that will allow him to deploy a player in both Edmonton and Bakersfield simultaneously? In recent weeks the Oilers have steadily closed ground on the top 5 teams in the West; even as they haven’t completely closed the gap as yet, they are now within striking distance. The Oilers are the only team of the ten Western contenders to win fewer than half of their home games, with just 13 victories in 27 games. Edmonton is the only team in the entire NHL to score 200+ goals at this point, alas their 175 goals against ranks second-worst among the 10 teams listed here. The Oilers lead the West in regulation wins with 28, important given that’s the first tie-breaker. Part of the problem is that Edmonton has only played 7 games where an extra point was awarded, fewest in the entire NHL. Meanwhile their 11 “other losses” are the most, tied with Calgary Flames. Just the top 10 shown here, with Nashville Predators hanging on grimly at the bottom of the list, though they do have the virtue of games in hand on all those above them. Not exactly a comfortable lead in a cruise to a playoff berth. And as the virtual Zamboni revs its engine, the Oilers have managed to scrape out the equivalent of a 1-goal lead in the race for victory, defined as simply making the playoffs. Article content

GAME RECAP: Red Wings 5, Oilers 4 (SO) (NHL.com)

McDavid comes within one of 100 points while Nugent-Hopkins contributes two goals and an assist in an Oilers comeback that fell short to the Red Wings on ...

"I think we went on a pretty good run and that's a credit to our players for putting that run together. The 27-year-old connected on a low pass from Tyson Barrie and rifled Edmonton's third of the game over the left shoudler of Husso, pulling the deficit to one with his 31st tally and 19th PPG of the season. But that said, I thought we had the bulk of the play in the game." Both teams scored two goals in the second and we scored two goals in the third. A 2-on-1 opportunity for the Red Wings saw Larkin slide one through an Oilers defender to Tyler Bertuzzi, who fired a low one-timer towards the Edmonton goal. "That's just trying to battle for the guys," Campbell said. We'll definitely look at it and be ready to go for Friday." "Just a frustrating night," Campbell said. Ville Husso made 40 saves on 45 shots over 65 minutes, and a further four in the shootout, to earn the Red Wings the extra point. "I thought we did a pretty good job of battling back and getting at least one point, but it's disappointing not to get the second," Nugent-Hopkins said. Just 2:01 after Draisaitl halved the deficit on the power play, it was the steady Spokane, Wash. I thought for the most part, we carried the play and got ourselves one point."

McDavid ran his points total up to 99 with a two-assist night, and was the only Oiler to score in the shootout. Edmonton is at the precipice of undoing a lot of the good work they have piled up since Christmas, having dropped a point in Philadelphia, another one here versus Detroit, and two in a 6-2 loss in Montreal. All and all it was an excellent two points.” “A lot of times, stuff gets created off of shots, (and play gets) going the other way,” said Draisaitl. “So if there's no shots, there's not really any breaks going the other way. An Oilers team that was once automatic when Connor McDavid, Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse hopped the boards for three-on-three overtime has been anything but dominant this season.

Oilers cooling off, drop another game to a non-playoff team (Edmonton Sun)

Wednesday evening at Rogers Place was all about the Edmonton Oilers' ability and willingness to respond.

LATE HITS: Connor McDavid assisted on Edmonton’s first two goals for his 98th and 99th points of the season. They had two power play goals and two faceoff goals, but I thought for the most part we carried the play.” “We found a way to eke out a point, that’s a good sign, but we can be a lot better in certain situations.” The New York Rangers will help answer that question when they visit on Friday. The last time Edmonton lost two games in a row was Jan. “The guys played a strong game in front of me,” he said. It’s a bit of a toss-up. Those are big points down the drain. We gave up two goals off faceoffs where we iced the puck prior to a faceoff goal against. We can be better in those situations and the individuals responsible understand that.” “They have to get corrected, there is no excuse for them. Article content

Jets Will Have a Deeper Playoff Run Than Maple Leafs & Oilers (The Hockey Writers)

The staff at The Score posted their latest NHL Power Rankings earlier this week, and something about them stuck out like a sore thumb. The Edmonton Oilers ...

Due to offensive depth, defensive play and geography, the Jets have the advantage in a playoff run over the Maple Leafs and Oilers. They have the luxury of moving a top-six forward or top-four defenseman while the Leafs and Oilers don’t. With plenty of prospects and draft picks to offer, there isn’t a player on the trade market that the Jets cannot afford. The Maple Leafs and Oilers both coincidentally have the same $1.1 million of deadline cap space available to spend, while the Jets have $9 million at their disposal. With the NHL’s March 3 trade deadline on the horizon, the Jets have money in their pocket while the other two don’t. It’s natural to think the Leafs will have a more difficult path to the Stanley Cup Final because they do. They are third in the league on the penalty kill and third in goals-against per game, allowing only 2.59 per contest. The Leafs have scored 181 goals but have a differential of plus-37. The Jets, meanwhile, have one of the best centre ice tandems in Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mark Scheifele, both of whom are They both have top-six forward units among the best in the league, and the teams match up very closely. The other items to consider are the opponents, the roster’s depth up front, and the ability to improve at the deadline. [Toronto Maple Leafs](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/toronto-maple-leafs/) and Winnipeg Jets were among the top 10.
