Marlowe review: Liam Neeson's particular set of skills can't rescue ... (The A.V. Club)

In his 100th film, Neeson plays classic detective Philip Marlowe alongside Jessica Lange and Diane Kruger.

Marlowe has seen it all—he’s a voyeur of the very worst human behaviors, and he’s world-weary to a fault. Where Bogie and even a comparably aged Robert Mitchum were able to convey Marlowe as a man who at least remembers what caring felt like, Neeson is going through the motions of going through the motions. As Dorothy Cavendish, Lange serves no discernible plot function in Marlowe, except to tell us how wicked she is and to provide a rhetorical focus for Clare’s alleged mommy issues. Perhaps grounding his noir homage in a world of vintage movie production is Jordan’s attempt to exorcise or at least acknowledge the Hollywood ghosts of Humphrey Bogart, Dick Powell and Robert Mitchum. If clearing the table of old icons is the point, it doesn’t work. Danny Huston is cast as a heavy, one of many nods to John Huston’s [The Maltese Falcon](https://www.avclub.com/film/reviews/the-maltese-falcon-1941), which somebody needs to tell Jordan is a movie about detective Sam Spade. Bogie, Powell and Mitchum are cinema’s triumvirate of Marlowe archetypes. Working from a well-reviewed and estate-authorized 2014 Marlowe novel by John Banville, Jordan and script collaborator William Monahan toss Banville’s traditionalist Bay City milieu for a Tinseltown frisson barely suggested in the source—often to bizarre effect. Clare was a perfume heiress in the source novel, but here she’s the daughter of a former screen siren (Jessica Lange) whose life has been entangled for years with an Irish American movie mogul. The bleariness of it all makes for a hazy memory of somebody’s better movie. But a small elegance, expressed in decent production values, terse pacing and long lateral camera takes, is the main thing director Neil Jordan has to offer in the mostly misguided The dark and violent world of Raymond Chandler’s durable hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe brings many descriptors to mind.

'Marlowe' Review: Liam Neeson's 100th Film Makes You Thirsty For ... (Collider.com)

Neil Jordan's latest has an excellent cast, but the mystery at the center of this Raymond Chandler-based story isn't up to snuff.

Luckily, Neeson’s performance is compelling enough to keep you interested, even though as the case unfolds you realize that it’s going in a pretty obvious direction. Just seeing Lange interact with the environment around her and Neeson’s Marlowe trying to see through Lang’s character Dorothy provides all the fun you’d need during a screening, and the only problem is that we don’t get a lot of interactions between the two throughout the movie. William Monahan’s (The Departed) script makes a point of showcasing Neeson’s particular set of skills, and sometimes Marlowe gets into fights just so we won't forget that the Academy Award nominee can kick ass. The case is intriguing and indeed makes us curious, but at the same time, it’s not the edge-of-your-seat mystery that makes you feel like you just have to know the answer to the riddle at all costs. Whenever you see Neeson and Jessica Lange interacting, you pretty much get the feel of being in the presence of Hollywood royalty doing their very best in every take, all the while making it seem effortless. [Neil Jordan](https://collider.com/tag/neil-jordan/) never lets this nostalgia take over: You get a glimpse of an old movie being filmed, but it’s never romanticized, and life in 1930s Los Angeles is depicted as pretty normal, even though it’s from the elite’s standpoint.

Liam Neeson 'Marlowe' Review: A Lethargic Let Down to Raymond ... (Daily Beast)

Liam Neeson follows in the footsteps of Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Elliott Gould (among others) in Marlowe (which hits theaters Feb.

Marlowe muddies the waters in ways that are less intriguing than indolent, and moreover, it’s not nearly as confusing as it should be; save for a couple of minor diversions, the tale told here is depressingly straightforward. That Marlowe occasionally taps into an authentic hardboiled vein—as when Marlowe is informed that a suspect has been found, and “she’ll wait ‘till we get there”—just makes its many swings and misses all the more frustrating. That task doesn’t prove too difficult for Marlowe, who almost immediately discovers that Nico is dead and cremated, the victim of a fatal hit-and-run outside the Corbata Club, an enclave of luxury and leisure for the city’s wealthy elite. [Jessica Lange](https://www.thedailybeast.com/jessica-lange-on-lady-gaga-freak-show-and-saying-goodbye-to-american-horror-story)), a wealthy and somewhat disreputable former starlet whose husband, the Ambassador (Mitchell Mullen), purchased Pacific Pictures studio for her. At least as often as not, this Marlowe’s world-weariness comes across as lethargy, such that when he says, “I’m getting too old for this,” it’s hard not to hear the cliché as less an articulation of the character’s disillusionment than an expression of the actor’s attitude toward such material. Marlowe Review: Neil Jordan and Liam Neeson Let Loose in ... (The Film Stage)

The key to understanding the new Philip Marlowe film is being aware that it's not based on an actual novel by Raymond Chandler but a 2014 exercise by Irish ...

But in the realm of recent “who is this for?” titles, it’s a lot more likable than, say, the very recent Los Angeles period piece Babylon or fellow noir throwback Nightmare Alley. Of course, still throwing some punches and even getting into a shoot-out (so the boomers who showed up for Blacklight and Memory jolt awake every once in awhile), the gruff-voiced modern Bronson actually manages to look happy to be there. It’s hard to totally pin down Marlowe’s reason for being; a post-modern Irish exile from Hollywood movies (sinister backlot goings-on supporting this reading) or maybe some kind of elaborate tax shelter plot?

Marlowe: The Rich History Behind Liam Neeson's Newest Character (Game Rant)

This movie star's 100th feature puts him in the role of one of the most iconic detectives in literary and cinematic history.

That's one mystery that the upcoming film will have to solve. Marlowe is a long-awaited return to classic pulp noir, complete with one of its most beloved names. It would be another two years before the first on-screen version of Marlowe would come to life. That makes him easily the archetypal performer for the genre, and his unique ticks as an actor are inherent to the character to this day. The first work to feature Philip Marlowe by name was The Big Sleep, but the character retroactively became the protagonist of a few of Chandler's other works. Farewell, My Lovely would go on to be adapted once more in 1975, with Robert Mitchum in the lead role. Marlowe is a classic noir detective, from the look to the attitude. The film, directed by Edward Dmtryk, was also an adaptation of Farewell, My Lovely, but with stricter Ask someone to name a noir detective, Marlowe is almost guaranteed to make the list. The titular Falcon, portrayed by George Sanders, would take over the role of the source material's detective. Characters like Philip Marlowe stick around because they're the perfect apotheosis of the subgenre they helped to inspire. Some fictional characters stand the test of time because people love them too much to ever let them die.
