The Blackhawks fell to 0-8-1 on the second of back-to-backs this season. Matthews and Tavares also combined to win 20 of 31 faceoffs for a win percentage of 64.5. The Blackhawks changed up their top-six because of the injuries and for a potential spark. The three of them had a better second and third period, highlighted by Domi connecting with Kurashev for a goal just 46 seconds in. He gave up three goals on his first nine shots — the second one that went off Connor Murphy's stick and in was very unfortunate — and the fourth one in the second period was a stinger. The Maple Leafs also had a goal disallowed because of a successful offside challenge by Chicago.

The Maple Leafs beat up on former teammate Petr Mrazek and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Another difference: Mrazek, who has an .884 save percentage, is not a good goaltender and the Leafs’ Ilya Samsonov is. After getting shut out in Montreal on Tuesday, Chicago fell to 0-8-1 in the second game of back-to-back sets. I don’t think the game had much life to it. “We did what we needed to do,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. There was no excuse for that, but the Leafs didn’t have to make any on Wednesday. Other than experience and name-brand cache, it would actually be better to play Wayne Simmonds and Alex Steeves than Domi and Barbashev, since there is such a small difference between what you’d get for your eight to ten minutes per night that the cheaper players will always make your team better. On defense, they have to choose between sitting Justin Holl and Connor Timmins, both of whom would be in competition for the best #6 defenseman on any team in the league. Frankly, the Leafs have seven defenseman who could play in the top four of a contending team. Two if they add a forward at the deadline and don’t move one out.

Blackhawks blueliner Jake McCabe lost his balance in the process, giving Nylander the extra time and space he needed to break in on Mrazek alone. “He’s working hard. Opinion | Maple Leafs take care of business against the sad-sack ... (Toronto Star)

Auston Matthews returned in form as Toronto avoided playing down to the level of the bottom-feeding Hawks.

With the puck on their sticks, they command the pace, especially the tape-to-tape passes on the cycle. “A better response that way, playing through it an generating our game and being in control, finishing off with a good 60. The Blackhawks are an interesting counter-image to the Leafs, from their most recent era of Chi-town greatness. The Leafs are at their best when they control the neutral zone and transition with speed as they did against the ’Hawks — a team they’ll see again in the Windy City on the weekend – applying a strong forecheck that frustrates the opposition and leads to turnovers. It looked, fleetingly, like the ’Hawks were going to put up a fight, or the Leafs perhaps stumble into second period dopiness again. Chicago, 31st in the league, arrived in town on the rear end of back-to-back games and dismantled in Montreal. Thus this was the Leafs intent on cooking up a souffle by cracking open the ’Hawks. Rasmus Sandin restored the lead — actually scored off the stick of Connor Murphy, inadvertently tapping it in between Mrazek’s pads. Rather than unhappy after the fact, we want to be able to address it and fix things while they’re happening. Instead the Leafs, who routinely rise to the challenge of elite foes, have been maddeningly unthriving in the gimmes. But it beats a kick in the head by another bottom-feeder. “That’s the response we wanted,” said Matthews, who contributed a goal and an assist, looking very much like slick self, un-rusty.

Can the Leafs' defence hold up in the playoffs? That's for GM Kyle ... (Toronto Star)

Young blueliners Timothy Liljegren, Conor Timmins and Rasmus Sandin will have until the trade deadline to prove they belong in the lineup.

I think everyone just wants to play as good as they can and help the team in any way they can.” A lot of depth in our organization, he’s another young guy who can step in and play whenever we need him.” I think the system really fits my game and the coaching staff and development staff have really put in a lot of time with me and helped my game grow.” Benn is in the twilight of his career, appearing in just 12 games for the Maple Leafs but has been very effective in those small doses. At six-foot-two and 202 pounds, Timmins is the most likely candidate to replace Holl (six-foot-three, 197 pounds) if he leaves as a free agent in the summer. So I think for me, I’ve just been trying to make it up day by day and really put in extra work with the coaching staff, the development staff, the gym. So it’s good for a team to have a lot of depth and we know we have that here for sure.” And so I think as long as I’m just continuing to improve each day and it’ll come.” “I didn’t like the penalties, but I thought he did a good job for a guy who hasn’t played (in a while).” “You need to play as good as you can because we have seven or eight defencemen,” said Rasmus Sandin. The Toronto Maple Leafs closed as a -650 money line favourite against the Chicago Blackhawks at FanDuel on Wednesday night. They lost that game 6-3 in the desert. Louis Battlehawks at +500. The Maple Leafs should be a heavy favourite to win both of those games. The Maple Leafs avoided a similar letdown on Wednesday night, taking a 3-1 lead in the first period and then cruising to the 5-2 victory. Auston Matthews scored his 26th goal of the season in his return as the Maple Leafs cruised to a 5-2 win. Maple Leafs: 3 Top-6 Forwards with Term to Acquire (The Hockey Writers)

As we approach the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, the rumours continue to swirl around the Maple Leafs as they look to add a forward, particularly for the top-six ...

He can do some serious damage as he has a powerful release and can generate quality chances when he’s on the ice. With the pace that both Tavares and Marner play at, Henrique would be a great complimentary piece to that line as he has great speed and strength to crash and get shots on net. With a contract at a reasonable cap hit of $5.5 million for the next two seasons, he has been extremely productive (49 points this season) for the Philadelphia Flyers where the team has struggled mightily. He’s an all situations type of player as he can make an impact at 5v5, the power play and the penalty kill. To lead a team that’s low in the standings in those categories is very impressive and despite the Ducks not being competitive the last three seasons, he continues to produce in a key area that’ll be more important in the playoffs. [Adam Henrique](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/adam-henrique/) has maintained a consistent level of play as a secondary scorer, as he can register 40-50 points. The Canucks as a whole don’t have the best underlying numbers at five-on-five, as they have a 48.34 Crosi for percentage and a 46.89 expected goals for percentage. While he’s not on-pace to match last season’s total, being on an offensive team like the Maple Leafs would help with his production, passing and ability to set up at the side of the net for a scoring opportunity. He has the awareness to be in a great spot to receive a pass and even set others up. The Canucks are in seller mode after captain Bo Horvat was dealt and Garland could be a name on the move. Whether he was with the [Arizona Coyotes or the Vancouver Canucks](https://thehockeywriters.com/conor-garland-better-trade-target-maple-leafs-miller/), he always seemed like a good fit for the Maple Leafs as he plays with a great amount of pace and speed. Garland has always had the speed to cut to the outside to beat defenders and open the game up very well.

Jets Will Have a Deeper Playoff Run Than Maple Leafs & Oilers (The Hockey Writers)

The staff at The Score posted their latest NHL Power Rankings earlier this week, and something about them stuck out like a sore thumb. The Edmonton Oilers ...

Due to offensive depth, defensive play and geography, the Jets have the advantage in a playoff run over the Maple Leafs and Oilers. They have the luxury of moving a top-six forward or top-four defenseman while the Leafs and Oilers don’t. With plenty of prospects and draft picks to offer, there isn’t a player on the trade market that the Jets cannot afford. The Maple Leafs and Oilers both coincidentally have the same $1.1 million of deadline cap space available to spend, while the Jets have $9 million at their disposal. With the NHL’s March 3 trade deadline on the horizon, the Jets have money in their pocket while the other two don’t. It’s natural to think the Leafs will have a more difficult path to the Stanley Cup Final because they do. They are third in the league on the penalty kill and third in goals-against per game, allowing only 2.59 per contest. The Leafs have scored 181 goals but have a differential of plus-37. The Jets, meanwhile, have one of the best centre ice tandems in Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mark Scheifele, both of whom are They both have top-six forward units among the best in the league, and the teams match up very closely. The other items to consider are the opponents, the roster’s depth up front, and the ability to improve at the deadline.
