Super Bowl 2023: What kind of grass does State Farm Stadium have? (AS English)

When the field is moved out on a large tray, the stadium becomes an arena that can be used for other non-football-related events.

The grass is moved out on a daily basis for a blast of sunshine and at 6pm is rolled back in to protect it from the cold temperatures overnight. Kickoff at 4:30 [MST], like it or not, so we have to be ready.” It takes approximately 60 minutes to move the field in and out of the stadium. Tahoma 31 is a hybrid of two types of Bermuda grasses and rye grass and was developed at Oklahoma State University and monitored by Dr. Yanqi Wu, who started the process of creating it in 2006. “With that extra pressure comes extra things that we need to do,” Mangan says.

The NFL changing its process to take better care of its field is needed for next season’s finale. A few players for both the Chiefs and Eagles have slipped on the playing surface, more than what happens in a usual NFL game. And making sure the grass turf inside State Farm Stadium was in immaculate condition at kickoff was paramount.

While going for natural grass for a game of this magnitude is a good idea, it’s clearly been poorly executed. Numerous players have slipped on the natural grass field at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, and several fans online have noticed throughout the game. That’s right, instead of using synthetic turf, they opted to go with a national grass setup at State Farm Stadium.

The NFL spent two years preparing this playing surface in State Farm Stadium for the Super Bowl, and it stinks.

It’s possible the field did not dry out as it might have under normal game conditions. But players have slid and slipped all game, leading television announcers and fans watching at home to wonder whether the field is too slippery. That was no different this year at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals.

The playing conditions in Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles raised some questions.

The NFL had spent two years preparing the grass just for Super Bowl LVII, and it was installed two weeks ago. Each morning, the grass had been rolled out to receive daily sunshine. Then Jerick McKinnon slid at the Eagles’ one-yard line to further run out the clock. Patrick Mahomes had a late 26-yard scramble on a bad ankle that resulted in him sliding to give his team optimal field position.

'Like playing on a water park': Aussie rages as image exposes $1.1m Super Bowl farce.

It hasn’t seemed to hinder Hurts, becoming the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to have three rushing touchdowns in a game to tie the match at 35-35 with 5 minutes remaining on a two-point conversion. Another key moment in the first half saw Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker miss a 42-yard field goal, hitting the upright and missing with scores tied at 7-7, and appearing to slip on the painted Super Bowl logo as he made the kick. However, the abundance of NFL logos painted onto the field seem to be responsible for the players slipping over, with former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli noticing the size of the Super Bowl logos. Pioli said on Twitter that slipping over on painted areas of the field was “not uncommon on grass.” Despite the NFL spending $1.16m on developing a field for State Farm Stadium that took 11 months to grow, the surface for Super Bowl LVII was still remarkably not up to scratch, with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes going down late in the first half with an ankle injury.

Eagles players rip State Farm Stadium's turf, 'the worst' field conditions (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

While there isn’t a definite answer as to why the field was slippery, it certainly contributed towards the players’ ability to perform. “It’s not like we were playing on ice and they were playing on grass. [Eagles’ James Bradberry owns up to pulling the jersey in the Super Bowl. “Once again, it had no reason for the outcome of the game. It was just adjusting to slippage that was going on.” The grass is grown at a local sod farm in Phoenix, meaning it was likely harvested into rolls. We all had to play on it...Same thing if you had to change a game plan or change a play, or whatever you had to do. [In an all-time great Super Bowl, the Eagles weren’t good enough. Growing and installing the turf cost $800,000. It was things we did that lost us the game. Still was slipping, so I don’t know. GLENDALE, Ariz.
