Can the Calgary Flames Find Consistency For a Playoff Push? (The Hockey News)

Saturday's win was just the fourth time the Calgary Flames won when trailing after the first period. Can they string together a win streak on the road?

Toffoli made it 5-2 1:57 into the third on a tap-in and scored his second of the game to make it 6-2 with 6:55 remaining. Andersson is one of Calgary’s top defensemen and has 34 points on the season. Andersson has been considered day to day and isn’t expected to miss a significant amount of time. “We had a good second and third.” But the Flames quickly struck again, making it 4-2 20 seconds later on Kadri’s shot through traffic for his 20th goal of the season. “It just felt like everything kind of kept coming in waves and we did a really good job,” Toffoli said.

Calgary Flames Post-Game: After tough first, Flames skewer Sabres ... (Flames Nation)

Be sure to check out NHL betting site Betway for the latest Flames game day odds! The Calgary Flames are a weird team. Sometimes they look very beatable.

Let’s give it jointly to the Kadri, Pelletier and Huberdeau line. Dillon Dube made a nice drop-pass to a pinching Dennis Gilbert, and Gilbert’s shot beat Luukkonen low to give the Flames a 3-2 lead. But the Flames roared back in the second period. Off a rush play, Dube found Tyler Toffoli at the far post and set him up with a nice pass for a redirection goal. The Flames made it 4-2 midway through the period after Kadri redirected a Chris Tanev point shot past Luukkonen. With Brett Ritchie in the penalty box, Tage Thompson leaned into a shot from Jacob Markstrom’s right on the power play that was wired over his shoulder to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo Sabres Burn Out in Rough Loss to Calgary Flames (Die By The Blade)

Score: Sabres 2 | Flames 7. Shots: BUF 23 | CGY 40. Buffalo Sabres Goals: Tage Thompson (35), Casey Mittelstadt (8). Calgary Flames Goals: Jakob Pelletier ...

Every game is a big one for the Sabres going forward at this point in the season, and this was a big disappointment. The bad news: half of the Flames’ shots went in that period, with three goals on six shots. The third period didn’t get any better, though the Sabres did squeak out 14 shots on goal to Calgary’s six. All of a sudden, the Sabres were very much behind, failing to put shots on net or find the back of it. If I’m Don Granato, I’m calling my timeout then to give the players a chance to settle. As I said, the Sabres were lucky to come out of the first period with a 2-0 lead.

Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames get touchdown on bad ... (Flames Nation)

After a couple of losses its nice to play a game where the bounces sta...

Player Spotlight – Jakob Pelletier – The first of many I’m sure congratulations Jakob on your first NHL goal. Luck for Markstrom the Sabres only managed to get 4 total in the first half of the game. The Sabres really played quite bad – but the Flames needed that badly. Back in his hometown with family – including his grandmother – in the building? The Flames took their time – made dangerous passes on the rush – and created chaos around the crease frequently. Taken By Chance – I’ll get the one negative out of the way – Michael Stone (36.40 SCF% // 19.86 HDCF%) saw 4 high danger chances against and only helped create 1. The positive to follow is every single forward won their match-ups – Weegar (85.98% // 87.77%) and Kadri (67.73% // 70.91%) with over 6 high danger chances involved each. Most encouraging was the heavy push in the third to pile on the lead instead of playing it safe. If the Flames D ever gets truly to full strength I like to keep this pair together and see the other guy (ideally Kylington) with Tanev. Corsi Clown – Dennis Gilbert (45.74%) and Michael Stone (48.05%) were the only guys under 50% and it was marginal. The Calgary Flames took advantage of Buffalo’s bad rush defence and inability to defend in front of their net. Only one player actually ended up finishing on the lower half of ratios I cover.

Flames Sunday Census: Calgary's best storyline of the season - The ... (The Win Column)

Flames Sunday Census: Polling Calgary Flames fans on what the best storyline of the season has been so far in 2022–23.

If one thing is a must, it’s that the Flames must build off the positive aspects of their team, and use it to become a more dangerous team in the league. Pelletier is clearly an NHL calibre player, and he should stay up on the roster for the remainder of the season. At 5v5, the line has a CF of 61.04%, 85.71% SF, and an xGF of 77.23%. Treliving awarded Vladar with a two-year $2.2M contract extension during the season, and he has absolutely earned it. Dan Vladar has 11 wins, a 2.68 GAA, and a .905 save percentage as the Flames backup. [Dom Luszczyszyn](https://twitter.com/domluszczyszyn) of The Athletic has Andersson playing at a $10M market value, which is pretty good considering that he only gets paid $4.6M. Ever since he has been called up, Pelletier has provided great speed, and he has been getting chances every single game. In a season where Markstrom isn’t playing his best hockey, Vladar has come in and given the Flames stability in net whenever needed. There are absolutely things that need to be better, and there are concerns about the team, however, there are many bright spots about this team as well. It’s true though, as he currently has 21 goals and 46 points in 53 games played this season. There are some good options to choose from, but what has been the best story to come out of this Flames season? Depending on who you talk to, a lot of Calgary Flames fans may describe this season as very doom and gloom.

They scored two goals on three shots in the first period, but the Flames were the better team by far, and absolutely dominated the Sabres from that point on.
