Toy Story 5 Officially Announced by Disney (The Direct)

Few franchises have stopped and started again as many times as Pixar's iconic Toy Story. With a 10-year gap between the second and third movies followed by ...

After all, Disney has been eager to explore all of its biggest IPs deeper on the streamer as of late. Perhaps they could opt for more spin-offs in the vein of Lightyear - maybe an animated western starring Woody. And most agreed, that was an ideal end to the story, even though many already thought Toy Story 3 had wrapped things up well. Toy Story 4 left everyone's favorite toys on a heart-wrenching bittersweet note as Woody rode off into the sunset with Bo Peep and her sheep. Obviously, neither of those is really an ideal option and both would be equally controversial in their own ways. With a 10-year gap between the second and third movies followed by another nine years before the fourth installment, fans have thought the award-winning animated series was over more than once.

The success of the original film went on to spawn three follow-ups: Toy Story 2 in 1999, Toy Story 3 in 2010, and Toy Story 4 in 2019 with the series also producing a spinoff film starring the famed Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear in 2022's Lightyear. Each of the previous entries in these franchises saw major success both commercially and critically, with Toy Story 4 earning over $1.07 billion at the global box office and went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards in 2020 for Best Original Song “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” by Randy Newman and won the Best Animated Feature. Along with the news of a new Toy Story, other animated franchises will also be receiving new entries with [Frozen 3](https://collider.com/frozen-3-disney/) and a new [Zootopia](https://collider.com/zootopia-2-disney/) film also being announced during the call.

Regardless of the direction that they take, a return to Toy Story should be as fun and emotional as audiences have come to expect. With several years now separating the last installment, Toy Story 5 will undoubtedly be met with plenty of hype. Toy Story 4 ended on a touching note, with Woody and Bo Peep getting their happy ending, and the rest of the toys going back to live with Bonnie. The last installment in the franchise, Toy Story 4, was thought to be a near-perfect ending to the series when it came out in 2019, and the film performed spectacularly well, raking in north of $1 billion worldwide. Toy Story 5 creates an interesting set of options for Disney and Pixar. The franchise has been in a will-they-won't-they state over the last few years regarding future storytelling, but Iger's comments confirm that a return to the iconic universe is in the cards and set for the big screen.

Tim Allen Confirms His Return as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5 (MovieWeb)

Tim Allen will again provide the voice of Buzz after Chris Evans briefly took over the role for last year's Lightyear.

The film's shortcomings have likely killed any tentative plans there might have been to do Lightyear 2, and perhaps that's also led to Disney reversing course and heading back to the old well with the Toy Story franchise. One reason fans may have figured that Allen's time in the role of Buzz Lightyear was over was that big changes had been made with the character following Toy Story 4. Even with the film following a different version of Buzz, the disconnect was there, and that may have contributed to Lightyear bombing at the box office.

Following Bob Iger's Toy Story 5 announcement, Disney fans are taking to social media to question the necessity of the planned Pixar sequel.

With many people already accusing the last film of being a largely unnecessary addition to the franchise, this announcement probably raises more questions than answers. Taking to social media in droves, viewers who grew up with the original films are questioning the need for another, with many accusing the studio of engaging in a blatant cash grab. Widely praised by critics and earning itself a swathe of award nominations, Toy Story would go on to gross over $374 million in worldwide box office and spawn three direct sequels, as well as last year’s spinoff film Lightyear, featuring Chris Evans as the in-universe fictional character that inspired the toy voiced by Allen.

5 Reasons Why Toy Story 5 Is Happening (Despite TWO Perfect ... (Screen Rant)

Despite the heartfelt conclusion to Toy Story 4, Woody and co are coming back. Here's why Disney and Pixar can't leave the franchise alone.

It might seem risky, but the enduring success of the main Toy Story series suggests that Pixar is more than capable of succeeding against the odds. If this is the case, and the movie is successful, Toy Story 5 could prove that Pixar movies as a whole have a future beyond being relegated straight to streaming. Likewise, the Toy Story franchise's greatest strength has long been in its ensemble. However, by pairing him with familiar characters in the original Toy Story setting, Toy Story 5 could rectify many of Lightyear's mistakes while capitalizing on its promise. Given that Buzz is arguably just as important to Toy Story as Woody, he is equally deserving of a definitive conclusion. Given this, continuing the Toy Story franchise in an official Toy Story 5 makes much more sense. Indeed, Toy Story 5 would be such a major tent pole release, given the popularity of the Toy Story brand, that a long run in cinemas seems inevitable. Considering that Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 were both billion-dollar movies on their own, it's reasonable for Disney to expect that revisiting the franchise will prove to be a shrewd investment. [Toy Story 5 is currently in development](https://screenrant.com/why-lightyear-toy-story-5-more-likely-pixar/) (via [Screen Rant](https://screenrant.com/toy-story-5-confirmed-development-disney/)). Although Woody got a fairytale ending with Bo, Buzz and the other characters remained in a state of limbo, destined to remain with Bonnie until she grows bored with them. While focusing on a fifth entry in the Toy Story series may feel creatively cynical, there's no doubt that it will be a financial triumph. While the original trilogy ended the Andy section of the saga in poignant fashion with the titular toys passing to new owner Bonnie, Toy Story 4 took things a step further by bringing lead character Woody's personal arc to an equally heartfelt conclusion.

5 animated movies that deserve sequels alongside 'Toy Story 5' (SYFY WIRE)

Disney is making Toy Story 5. Here's more animated films that need another installment, including Paranorman and The Grinch.

Throw in some more magic, a big battle sequence, and more of Merlin's Bermuda shorts, and it's a ton of fun, and the original movie can still serve as a great accompaniment to anyone who wants to go looking for it. Imagine a modern Disney adventure about Merlin -- still weird, still hilarious -- and a teenage Wart just trying to learn to be a good king. Aliens hasn't made it back to the big screen in the decade-plus since its release. [The Grinch](https://digitalmoviedeals.nbcuniversal.com/products/illumination-presents-dr-seuss-the-grinch?variant=42251189813424) managed to win over audiences, and more than a few critics, with its surprisingly in-depth new take on the classic Dr. Though it expanded as a franchise thanks to TV specials and a short-lived animated series, Monsters vs. If they ever did decide to start getting into the sequel business, though, Well, while they never got the same play as How The Grinch Stole Christmas ( [now streaming on Peacock!](https://www.peacocktv.com/watch/asset/tv/how-the-grinch-stole-christmas/2a8377be-d3d7-31f9-9673-bc7a93a57330)), there are other Grinch specials floating around out there, written by Seuss himself. In the near future, according to Iger, we can expect more news on a second Zootopia film, a third Frozen film, and a fifth film in the [Toy Story](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/topic/toy-story) series that's now been running since 1995 and already includes follow-ups like TV specials and the spinoff movie Lightyear. Toy Story is a franchise that's seemed like it's reached a natural conclusion twice now, but the appetite for more adventures from Pixar's original roster of beloved characters just refuses to go away, and so we're headed back to the universe soon. So, here are five of our favorite animated films that deserve sequels alongside Toy Story, Frozen, and the rest. Toy Story's not the only franchise the folks at Pixar Animation Studios have built. They've also managed to expand into franchises based on Cars, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo, among others.
