Warriors-Pistons-Hawks-Blazers trade grades: Can James Wiseman ... (The Athletic)

The Pistons added a reclamation project at last year's deadline and they're following the same script in 2023.

He’s had a down season for the Pistons during 2022-23, and the Hawks get a chance to add a quality wing to their rotation and their future. [Atlanta Hawks](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/hawks/) are sending five second-round picks to the Warriors to get Detroit’s [Saddiq Bey](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/saddiq-bey-1li2WZ1BSYZ7fGTT/) in this deal. The Maybe the Blazers can get a player like either of them some day, or select someone and one of them develops into a role player like those guys. [Matisse Thybulle](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/matisse-thybulle-FecSqxC1FV1DRBU7/), Payton would be a better guy to utilize. [Golden State Warriors](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/warriors/) will not stand pat at the [NBA](https://theathletic.com/nba/) trade deadline, and we know Troy Weaver loves to deal for the [Detroit Pistons](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/pistons/). Or the Pistons could agree to a contract extension with him this fall. He plays so intelligently on both ends of the floor, and he doesn’t let his limitations on offense hurt what his team can do. Wiseman no longer has the pressure of performing as such a high draft pick for his team because the Pistons didn’t draft him. Now, the stakes lower significantly, and the Pistons get to see what they can build with his size, skill set and athleticism. 2 pick in the draft. It makes sense that these two teams are linking up as the Warriors decide to punt on the [James Wiseman](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/james-wiseman-Ac3GSrjtXssr4rts/) experience.

Pistons acquire James Wiseman, trade Saddiq Bey: Why did it ... (The Athletic)

Moving Bey isn't a shock. The Athletic reported multiple times in the lead up to Thursday's NBA trade deadline that the 23-year-old forward was the most likely ...

Detroit still remains one of the league’s top cap-space teams for the summer of 2023 and is destined for a top-5 pick in the stacked 2023 NBA Draft. Additionally, this move opens up a bigger role for second-year forward [Isaiah Livers](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/isaiah-livers-FMjn4CUbYw0Z166i/), who possesses the 3-and-D qualities Detroit is seeking from that role. It could backfire, though, if Bey goes on to find consistency in his play and role, and Wiseman isn’t able to stay healthy, despite him appearing to have more upside if things break right for him. However, per team and league sources, Detroit would have needed substantial draft assets to consider taking on his contract, which has three years left and over $75 million owed. The Athletic reported multiple times in the lead up to Thursday’s NBA trade deadline that the 23-year-old forward was the most likely “big” name on the roster to be moved. Wiseman is just the latest example. None who spoke to The Athletic were willing to give up anything of significance to land Bey. According to team sources who were granted anonymity to speak freely, Wiseman was the top player on the Pistons’ big board during the 2020 NBA Draft process. The efficient-scoring On the floor, Bey’s style of play was starting to wear on some in Detroit’s organization. The shock to many, though, comes in the form of the return as Bey has, at the very least, proven to be an NBA player in some capacity while Wiseman is still trying to get his career off the ground. [Jalen Duren](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jalen-duren-dEKiN9tnTFrUpugK/) and [Isaiah Stewart](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/isaiah-stewart-RZq0RaKHJrTHmA2i/)) the organization has high hopes for in the future and another in [Marvin Bagley III](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/marvin-bagley-iii-4bBXnfp3cDJIurQc/), who signed a three-year contract last offseason.

Warriors swap James Wiseman for Gary Payton II: Why did it happen? (The Athletic)

Reuniting with Gary Payton II was an all-in move for the Warriors on a smaller approach.

To make financial and rotation room, Payton was a casualty and [Donte DiVincenzo](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/donte-divincenzo-5yeG2wUB9RTaEEGd/) was identified as the cheaper alternative. That included a pursuit of [Toronto Raptors](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/raptors/) forward [OG Anunoby](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/og-anunoby-QdEOH7cdW2HOrPHU/) over the last 48 hours. [James Wiseman](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/james-wiseman-Ac3GSrjtXssr4rts/)’s contract to get a veteran rotation upgrade. They first added Payton on a 10-day contract out of the G League two seasons ago. [found a four-team route](https://theathletic.com/4173430/2023/02/09/james-wiseman-saddiq-bey-trade-nba-hawks-pistons-warriors/) to a more simplified deal. Lacob and the front office didn’t punt on the entirety of the future to maximize the present. They’ve now officially given that up for Payton, a player whose history with the Warriors sits on the opposite end of that spectrum. But Wiseman was the compromise, which is a notable step and statement. The Warriors protected [Jonathan Kuminga](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jonathan-kuminga-6xXExjD2A4eIrB46/) and pivoted to other options. [Golden State Warriors](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/warriors/) discussed the framework for larger deals at the [NBA](https://theathletic.com/nba/) trade deadline. But the Wiseman for Payton swap is mostly about the win-now immediate. This inactive reality finally convinced Joe Lacob, an insistent Wiseman advocate, and the front office to hit the eject button, signaling an admission of a costly draft mistake.
