He was the white-haired man in the crowd – sitting there, hands in his lap, watching with his own eyes as LeBron James broke the NBA scoring record.

Some of it was ego: He wanted to wear the swoosh.’ Writer Brian Windhorst relates in his book, ‘LeBron, Inc.: The Making of a Billion-Dollar Athlete,’ why James always dreamed of working with Nike: ‘Some of it was superior branding. He asked that his picture be taken with him and Nastase at the time. And he lives and breathes sport and its athletes. Knight was joking when he later said that this was a sign of his far-sighted promotional judgement. It will have amused him that he has gone viral as a bystander to it.

He retired as Chairman Emeritus of the company in 2016, after serving as its Chairman and CEO for many years. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and his journey to success in the business world started during his time at the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the track and field club under coach Bill Bowerman. The iconic “swoosh” logo of Nike was created by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for just $35. The company’s first employee, Jeff Johnson, suggested the name “Nike,” after the Greek goddess of victory, and Blue Ribbon Sports was officially renamed Nike in 1971. He then pursued his Master’s degree in Business Administration at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he wrote a paper that foreshadowed his future venture into the athletic shoe industry. In addition to his role at Nike, Knight is also the owner of the stop-motion film production company Laika.
