Ryan Dadoun breaks down Tuesday's NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and Detroit Red Wings.

Given the scoring threats with Edmonton, beating that [spread](https://www.actionnetwork.com/education/point-spread) seems extremely doable. The over of 6.5 goals, which comes with a potential payout of -122, also interests me, but success there mostly hinges on Edmonton’s amazing forward core being paired against Detroit’s shaky goaltending. What’s crazy is the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin leads the Red Wings’ scoring race with 15 goals and 43 points in 47 contests and while those are great numbers in their own right, McDavid has nearly doubled that with 92 points, including 41 goals, in 50 games. [puck line](https://www.actionnetwork.com/education/puck-line) here, where you can get it -1.5 at a juicy +152 at FanDuel. He got off to a disastrous start with Edmonton, posting an 8-6-1 record, 4.02 GAA and .876 save percentage over his first 15 games of the campaign. Getting some level of support for McDavid and Draisaitl has been a consistent challenge in Edmonton. Get up-to-the-minute [NHL Odds](https://www.actionnetwork.com/nhl/odds)here. Since then, though, he’s been reliable, posting a 7-2-0 record, 2.25 GAA and .911 save percentage over his last 10 contests. He’s been limited to one goal and point over four games since returning from a wrist injury, but it’s not surprising that he needs some time to get going after missing more than two months.

After that Edmonton won their next three in a row before putting up a stinker against the Blue Jackets where they still earned a point before ending on a fun ...

Looking at the Oilers roster as it is currently constructed I just don't see how they make him fit. I say this because suddenly everyone in Edmonton seems to be talking about Jakob Chychrun after months of saying they didn't think he was a fit here. The issue however is that Edmonton hasn't exactly been world beaters against the East thus far this season. Even though the start of January was a bit dicey, with the team going 1-2-1 and playing pretty brutal in all three losses, they built momentum on a three game road trip, treating the Sharks and Ducks like AHL teams and then ending on a high note with a close fought win against the Golden Knights. After that Edmonton won their next three in a row before putting up a stinker against the Blue Jackets where they still earned a point before ending on a fun game against the Hawks where the Oilers played a University goalie because they were up 7-3. That momentum is gone and if this team wants to have Cup aspirations this season they need to refocus and create new momentum all over again.

The Red Wings were very average heading into the break so maybe the time off did something for them but you can say the same thing for the Oilers who were 7-1-2 in their last 10 games heading into the All-Star break. Yes, the Oilers are on road coming out of the All-Star break but they have been a great road get all season. Starting with the Edmonton Oilers taking on the Detroit Red Wings.

GDB 51.0: Oilers Scoring Depth Emerges (5:30pm MT, SNW) (Oilers Nation)

Since January 1st the Edmonton Oilers lead the NHL with 4.25 goals/game. They have outscored teams 51-35 overall and 35-22 at 5×5, and they are doing it ...

He only has three points in 21 career games v. NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: Nugent-Hopkins scores only his second career goal v. I think Foegele has played quite well lately; he just hasn’t buried his breakaway chances. However, they finished the game with Kane-McDavid-Draisaitl, and they were a line in practice yesterday. Right now, every facet of their game is contributing and that should continue tonight in Detroit, against a lesser skilled team. Tyson Barrie is the only defender with a goal in 2023. Every forward has at least one goal in 2023, and Evander Kane (coming off wrist surgery) and Jesse Puljujarvi are the only forwards without a 1.5 points/60. There are some interesting nuggets to look at when discussing the Oilers recent play. Ad Advertisement The Oilers depth scorers have contributed much more in 2023 than in the past, and if that continues the Oilers should be considered a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Since January 1st the Edmonton Oilers lead the NHL with 4.25 goals/game.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Oilers Game 49 Preview, Prediction, Odds (Octopus Thrower)

The Detroit Red Wings are looking to get things on track for the second half of the season as they take on the Edmonton Oilers, here's what to expect!

For that reason, I think the Red Wings will start the second half with a loss. You can take the Red Wings at +1.5 for a -175 payout on the Puck Line. It’s a match-up on home ice and gives the Red Wings a chance to correct the course on home ice. For the Red Wings, it is going to require playing strong hockey defensively and forcing the Oilers to the outside. Detroit has a +140 payout on the Moneyline while being the favorite on the Puck Line. The team’s lack of defense has been challenging, but the Red Wings continue to fight.

GAME RECAP: Oilers 5, Red Wings 2 (NHL.com)

In their first game back from the All-Star Break, the Oilers picked up a 5-2 victory in a spirited affair against the Detroit Red Wings.

"In today's NHL, there are a lot of guys that feel they can get in there and the referees bail them out a lot. So a great way to start the road trip." Then as the game wore on, there was more and more emotion to the game and we found contributions offensively from some unusual suspects. Warren Foegele showed off just how competitive it is to be a part of the Oilers lineup on a night-in-night-out basis. The Oilers were lucky to escape the first frame with just a 1-0 deficit, with a trio of Red Wings posts saving the day. Thankfully, we kept them out and the guys did the rest." Nugent-Hopkins saucer feed landed directly in Foegele's wheelhouse for the one-timer and his sixth goal of the season. While his 2022-23 campaign has been sidelined at times due to injury, Foegele is on a 15-goal, 82-game pace which is well in line with his career average of roughly 14 goals per 82-games. After a solid few minutes of pressure in the Red Wings offensive zone to begin the game, the home side began to push back against the Blue & Orange, culminating in the game's opening marker by Tyler Bertuzzi. The Oilers offensive onslaught began with some excellent transition offence by Philip Broberg, who blitzed up the right side of the Red Wings zone. "It was definitely emotional game," Warren Foegele said after the game. "I thought there was some physicality to the game tonight," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said.

With the primary assist on Bertuzzi's goal, Raymond (38-52--90 in 131 career NHL games) has the third-most points in franchise history before age 21, trailing only Steve Yzerman (83-135--218 in 211 career games) and Gordie Howe (35-68--103 in 158 career games). Jake Walman was credited with an assist on Veleno's seventh tally of the season. Bertuzzi buried an impressive backhand feed from Raymond, beating Oilers netminder Jack Campbell for the lone goal of the first period. But it just didn't go our way tonight with the offense." Tempers flared and multiple post-whistle scrums occurred during Tuesday's game, which saw Tyler Bertuzzi open the scoring for the Red Wings at 10:24 of the first period.

Fortunately the posts were painted pretty thick and the Oilers only had to battle back from a one-goal, first-period deficit.

Down two goals and awarded a power play, the Red Wings had pulled Husso for a two-man advantage. Nugent-Hopkins increased the lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal at 15:38 of the third period on a shot from the right face-off circle. The Oilers had two good chances to increase the lead on the power play, but were unable to cash in on either occasion. “I’m quite happy with Warren Foegele, specifically in the month of January and into the month of February,” Woodcroft said. The puck ended up on Lucas Raymond’s stick while the rest of the Oilers were skating the other way, and he slid it across to Tyler Bertuzzi for the tap-in. Ryan McLeod, and Warren Foegele, with two goals, scored in the second period to take control of the contest.

Red Wings & Oilers: Trade Deadline Partners Once Again? (The Hockey Writers)

The Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers have the players, picks, and prospects to come together for a deal at this year's trade deadline.

As the Red Wings continue to rebuild, high draft selections like these will go a long way in escaping mediocrity. As a former junior and college hockey player, Tony has a unique perspective on Red Wings topics. And finally, the Red Wings have cap space in spades. The Red Wings could theoretically take on both deals, though one would be enough to sufficiently help Edmonton. His [grit and playoff-style approach](https://thehockeywriters.com/red-wings-bertuzzi-february-2023/) to the game could fit in well on the Oilers’ second line. Similarly, Tullio was originally chosen in the fifth round, and has progressed nicely since his 2020 selection. Petrov is looking like a sixth-round steal for the Oilers. In the prospects department, Matvei Petrov, Tyler Tullio, and Carter Savoie could bolster Detroit’s forward pipeline. “This won’t be an easy task for Ken Holland, who thinks his team is pretty good and doesn’t want to overly disrupt the chemistry on a roster that has gone 7-1-2 in their last 10 games).” Meanwhile in Detroit, Gagner served as a veteran presence and solid depth piece for two-plus seasons. Athanasiou failed to impress in Edmonton and left as a free agent that offseason. Edmonton will likely buy in an attempt to get over the hump and reach the Stanley Cup Final.

Ryan McLeod scored at 3:02, finishing a setup from Philip Broberg, who had grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated it into Detroit's zone. The result was a third penalty for the Wings, with Seider, Bertuzzi and Kane in their respective boxes. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins converted during Rasmussen's second penalty, putting the Oilers up by a pair with 4:22 to play. His injuries have made it more difficult to determine what would be a fair extension – and that makes it likely he could be continuing his career elsewhere. The Wings built an early lead and kept Tuesday's outing at Little Caesars Arena competitive, but a late flurry of special teams activity and an empty net goal left them with a 5-2 loss. Pius Suter did an outstanding job shadowing McDavid, helping to create a sequence that ended with Joe Veleno scoring just as Michael Rasmussen had come out of the penalty box.

I love depth scoring so very much. Final Score: 5-2 Oilers. Welcome to our Oilers game day content presented by NHL odds site Betway!

since the calendar year turned to 2023, jack campbell is 8-1 with a .917 save percentage. Had it not been for the posts Detroit hit, this game could have ended with a much different outcome. - On the penalty kill, however, the Oilers were perfect and killed off all five shorthanded situations they faced, some of which came at key points in the game. Brutal way to finish off what was otherwise a wonderful road period. - How about the way Vincent Desharnais keeps collecting assists with that sneaky wrister he lets go from the point that often finds its way through traffic? - Big shout out to Philip Broberg on the first multi-point game of his NHL career. - Only 36 seconds after McLeod tied the game, Warren Foegele gave the Oilers the lead (2-1) on a perfectly executed 2-on-1 rush with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins that saw the latter with the dish and McLovin with the finish. Not only was Soup the busier of the two goalies but he also made some massive saves throughout the night that either a) kept the Oilers in the mix to come back or b) with the lead towards the end of the night. Soup finished the night with 31 saves and a .939 save%. After the way Kane mixed it up all night, I was happy to see the guy get rewarded with a goal for his efforts. Quietly, RNH put together another multi-point night and I love to see that his heater of a season has picked right back up after the break. For a guy that was just healthy scratched, I couldn’t think of a better way for Foegele to tell the coaching staff that he got the message.

Another who had an awful time of it in the first period, especially defensively, in which he was tagged fir 6 mistakes on Grade A shots including the goal. But he came came through on a later powerplay for the 4-2 tally with under 5 minutes to play. High-event game with a few wobbles including a terrible penalty for roughing after the buzzer that put the Oilers short-handed for the first 2 minutes of the third. Made a key mistake on the Kubalik breakaway but Campbell had his back. 2:44 on the penalty kill and a fine 7/9=78% on the dot. Involved in a pair of terrific chances with Foegele, once as the passer, once as the shooter. All over the ice and in a good way, contributing to 5 Grade A shots by Edmonton and 0 by Detroit. A key difference maker in this one, Campbell (and his posts) rejected 15 of the 17 Grade A shots we recorded for the Wings. A rare non-factor on the powerplay. A day late and a dollar short much of the night, especially in the final frame when he took a pair of penalties (one of them pretty marginal) and also was beaten by a pass for a Detroit breakaway. A clean sheet at the defensive end, including 1:09 on the penalty kill. Also took a minus, though an entirely undeserved one, on the second Detroit goal when he was one of the victims of a brutal Oilers line change at the end of a powerplay.

When that is avoided, which has become much more consistent recently, we see plays like this from even the bottom six that lead to exits and offensive attacks. Now, fortunately, this is an easy fix and I would argue we are seeing that in the last month. Some related to injury. So below the hash marks they ran a tight zone and above the hash marks they ran a man-on-man with the forwards tracking their assignments. The other, and far more common way the 1-1-3 succeeds is by forcing dump-ins that can be now handled by 3 players instead of two players with F3 being that third player. That player has to stay higher in the offensive zone and then has to work very hard to get back to a defensive posture. Now the problem for the Oilers in running this tactic was that the composition of the Oilers defencemen. This is absolutely my favourite clip of how well the 1-2-2 was working for the Oilers last season. It is crystal clear, he demanded the F3 stay about the puck and in the middle of the ice to prevent easy exits when all three forwards were down below the bottom of the circles chasing the puck. Take a look at these two clips and focus on the location of F3. Ad Advertisement
