The Rangers won, cycled the puck quickly, got the Flames chasing around a bit, and Zibanejad got his second goal of the game to tie things up at 4-4 off a redirect from a pass below the goal line from Artemi Panarin. The Flames took the lead a little later. Two quick goals got the Flames a third period lead in Madison Square Garden. Mikael Backlund’s line battled for the puck in the offensive zone, and Noah Hanifin fed Mangiapane at the side of the net for a quick redirect with his skate to make it 3-3. The Rangers took the lead early in the second off a puck-handling miscue by Nazem Kadri just inside the offensive blueline. The Flames answered back before the period ended, though.

Tanev briefly left Monday’s game at the end of the first period after he’d served his time in the box for a fight with Trouba. “I don’t think we’ve had a game like that this year,” Weegar told reporters in New York. “There really wasn’t that many mistakes, there were very few,” said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. The Flames will be disappointed not to have earned two, but there can be no complaints about their effort. With where they’re at in the standings — holding the eighth and final playoff position in the NHL’s Western Conference — moral victories count for nothing. Article content

To make matters worse, Dube was assessed an instigator penalty that put the Rangers on the powerplay. I was the closest guy to step up and help guys out. Markstrom wasn't tested nearly as much at the other end - facing only 12 shots through the first 29 minutes of the game - but he was good when called upon. Shots on goal favoured the Flames 11-10 in that chippy opening frame. "We showed that we love each other, we care for each other, and a lot of guys stepped up. Without hesitation, Chris Tanev shed the mitts and had a spirited tilt with the rugged, Rangers blueliner. Calgary Flames centre Nazem Kadri believes his first NHL team — the Maple Leafs — will get over the playoffs hump one day.
“It’s a challenge and I appreciate that he doesn’t quit,” Kadri said. Huberdeau will be 37 in the final year of his extension, Kadri will be 39. I couldn’t imagine how he (LeBron) feels waking up in the morning after a game. We’ve got an opportunity to be in the top three top teams and we haven’t even played close to our best. “We’ve probably had the biggest turnover of any team in the league, so it takes time to get used to (each other). 1 team (Dallas, 66 points) from the 10th-place team (Nashville, 54). Kadri has always carried a positive mindset but he and his current team have to be worried about getting over the hump this season. The trade to Calgary, for Matthew Tkachuk, and the contract extension (eight years, $84 million) that seemed destined for Johnny Gaudreau, before he left for Columbus, seem to have weighed on Huberdeau. He nixed the deal, setting in motion the trade to Colorado for Alex Kerfoot and Tyson Barrie. Kadri was drafted by the Leafs in 2009 and was on four playoff teams that failed to get out of the first round. “It takes a long time to figure out how to win, and you need some luck as well,” Kadri said. The Leafs tried to trade Kadri to Calgary four years ago.

I was behind the net a little bit, just put on the breaks, sprinted to it and tried to score.” The third period was the wildest of the bunch as Andrew Mangiapane scored a controversial goal to tie the game at 6:38 of the third period. Lafreniere ended it by using his speed to set up a two-on-one situation. After a long review, the goal was allowed to stand. Artemi Panarin stepped on the ice early leading to a too many men minor setting his coach off, making him serve the penalty. “And then I see it coming back in front. According to the Rangers, his 10 goals since January 3rd ranks 4th in the NHL. Red-hot Filip Chytil picked up the first goal of this crazy contest at the 5:37 mark of the opening period. Chris Tanev immediately reacted forcing Trouba to drop the gloves. I don’t know, first game back maybe the guys were pissed that the break was too short.” That was followed by a big hit by Sammy Blais on Milan Lucic, which started another melee involving Will Cuylle’s second NHL fight, this time with MacKenzie Weegar. After the 5-4 victory, head coach Gerard Gallant didn’t have much of an explanation for his team’s overcharged performance.

Everyone always talks about how Darryl is going to get to do whatever he wants but money talks – and Huberdeau is committed more money for a longer term than the coach. “MaKe a SaVe” – you get in there and get shell-shocked from a team that doesn’t defend the front of the net. Nobody is trading for him when that new contract kicks in right now – I’m just saying something is going to give eventually and usually the guy getting paid the most wins that battle. Huberdeau (46.26% // 0%), Kadri (35.29% // 0%), and Pelletier (21.30% // 0%) also failed to get a high danger chance. Backlund (59.92%), Coleman (61.53%), and Mangiapane (71.73%) constantly get the job done. Anything is better than the status quo from before the break and it’s a welcome look. That being said if the team plays better in front of the other guy you should probably play him a bit more. If his team could actually limit the chances in front of the crease when he plays, he may be able to actually improve his numbers. Dillon Dubé (75.74%) led the team with the wonder three of Mangiapane (66.39%), Backlund (64.98%), and Coleman (59.51%) being right behind him. Corsi King – The Flames never have problems winning the overall shot attempt battle – it’s a good sign that they are able to spend so much time getting into the offensive zone to have the opportunity to shoot the puck. It’s a Team Game – The entire second half of the game really saw momentum swing the Rangers direction. In fact, neither Dubé (57.99% // 0%) or Toffoli (37.36% // 0%) snuck away to get a 5-on-5 chance either.

Chechelev remains one of the busiest and most-used goaltenders in the ECHL. His only points were in the junior league, though, and he’s been a fourth liner (or 13th forward) in Liiga since the tournament. A bad offensive month for Phillips is one where he scores at just shy of a point-per-game pace. 28 and has two points since the beginning of November and his face-off numbers aren’t anything to write home about. He’s essentially cleared the bar of expectations one should reasonably have for him this season and given he’s playing junior A, it’s hard to really read much more into his results. He did fairly decent, all things considered, and put up a few points. (He’s also missed chunks of time here and there due to injuries.) Huckins has scored at a pretty consistent clip this season, with January being a fairly representative month for him. Gilbert spent a portion of January in the NHL. He’s an important player for arguably the best team in the entirety of the Canadian major junior system. He had a slightly over point-per-game January. Another month has come and gone in the hockey world, and the far-flung prospects of the Calgary Flames in various leagues have racked up some impressive (and less so) on-ice performances.

If the only thing you care about is getting two points on the board, maybe that’s not enough for you. Guys stood up for each other.
