2023 Grammy Awards Predictions (Variety)

The Grammys are similar to the Oscars in at least one respect this year — it's a real contest in most of, if not all of the top fields.

- “Break My Soul” — Beyoncé, S. LeBlanc, Shawn Carter, John Stephens, Dwayne Carter, William Roberts & Nicholas Warwar, songwriters (DJ Khaled Featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend & Fridayy) Blige, David Brown, Dernst Emile II, Gabriella Wilson & Tiara Thomas, songwriters (Mary J. Carter, Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant & Christopher A. Mary J. - Diplo — Diplo Hinshaw, Jamie Hurton, Eric Hudson, Jason Phillips, Khaled Khaled, London Holmes, Andre “Dre” Christopher Lyon, Reminisce Mackie, Leon Michels, Jerome Monroe, Jr., Kim Owens, Brandon Anderson, Jeremie “Benny The Butcher” Pennick, Bryan Ponce, Demond “Conway The Machine” Price, Peter Skellern, Shaffer Smith, Nicholas Warwar, Deforrest Taylor, Tiara Thomas, Marcello “Cool” Valenzano, Alvin “Westside Gunn” Worthy, Anthony Jermaine White & Leon Youngblood, songwriters Beam, Grace Jones & Tems, featured artists; Jameil Aossey, Bah, Beam, Beyoncé, Bloodpop, Boi-1Da, Cadenza, Al Cres, Mike Dean, Honey Dijon, Kelman Duran, Harry Edwards, Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant, Ivor Guest, Guiltybeatz, Hit-Boy, Jens Christian Isaksen, Leven Kali, Lil Ju, MeLo-X, No I.D., NovaWav, Chris Penny, P2J, Rissi, S1a0, Raphael Saadiq, Neenyo, Skrillex, Luke Solomon, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Jahaan Sweet, Syd, Sevn Thomas, Sol Was & Stuart White, producers; Chi Coney, Russell Graham, Guiltybeatz, Brandon Harding, Hotae Alexander Jang, Chris McLaughlin, Delroy “Phatta” Pottinger, Andrea Roberts, Steve Rusch, Jabbar Stevens & Stuart White, engineers/mixers; Denisia “@Blu June” Andrews, Danielle Balbuena, Tyshane Thompson, Kevin Marquis Bellmon, Sydney Bennett, Beyoncé, Jerel Black, Michael Tucker, Atia Boggs p/k/a Ink, Dustin Bowie, David Debrandon Brown, S. The winds look to favor Maneskin, Omar Apollo, Samara Joy, Anitta or Wet Leg — it may be a real photo finish between those five, though we can’t completely rule out a sixth candidate there, Muni Long. That’s almost anyone’s guess, although, among the 10 nominees, it’s easy to at least rule out the half of them that even most Grammy voters had never heard. But, speaking of “As It Was,” the sands seem to have shifted to where it’s now more widely seen as a contest between Beyoncé and Harry Styles in the three all-genre categories where all three artists are nominated — record of the year, song of the year and album of the year. That’s not to say that Adele couldn’t still pull it off in one of those three top categories or even manage a sweep; she may remain a quiet favorite, especially among the older voters who used to serve as the silent majority (and now, with efforts to diversify and young-ify the Recording Academy, may be a strong, silent minority).

Grammys 2023: Timeline of Beyoncé and Adele wins and losses (Los Angeles Times)

As Adele and Beyoncé compete at Sunday's Grammy Awards, here's a timeline of when the Recording Academy has nominated the pop stars in the same categories.

At the 59th Grammy Awards, the year Adele professed her love for Beyoncé, Adele scooped up trophies for record and song of the year and pop solo performance (“Hello”), album of the year and pop vocal album (“25”). The 54th Grammys proved to be another sweep for Adele, who earned six awards for sales juggernaut “21,” including album of the year and its hits “Someone Like You” and “Rolling in the Deep,” with the latter song earning the record and song of the year titles. The artists are otherwise separated by genre, with Adele in pop and Bey in her usual R&B category as well as the dance/electronic fields this year. Beyoncé roared back the following year at the 52nd Grammy Awards, with six wins, including song of the year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” and other recognition for her “I Am ... She won two of the nine awards “Lemonade” was nominated for, including urban contemporary album and music video (“Formation.”) Adele had one nomination that year with “Hometown Glory,” which got a nod for female pop vocal performance. During her debut at the 51st Grammy Awards, Adele clinched the trophies for best new artist and female pop vocal performance. So all eyes will be on these two iconic artists on Sunday — and whether Beyoncé will finally win the prize for album of the year. In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Adele said [Beyoncé once told her](https://www.essence.com/news/beyonce-adele-voice-god-compliment-rolling-in-the-deep-sasha-fierce/) that when she listens to Adele’s music “I feel like I’m listening to God.” “I just said to her, like, the way that the Grammys works, and the people who control it at the very, very top — they don’t know what a visual album is. (Jay Z is nominated five times this year as a producer for his work on “Renaissance” and three of its nominated tracks.) “And so beautiful and soul-bearing and we all got to see another side of you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that.

At Grammys 2023, can Beyonce finally take home the top prize? (The National)

Queen Bey is up against Adele for the Album of the Year award.

No matter who wins, the Recording Academy's attention has amped up the career of Samara Joy, who along with a nod in the jazz categories earned a shot at Best New Artist. She has never won Album of the Year honours and although she has the most Record of the Year nods with eight, she's never won that prize either. The superstar — who has been making good on a vow to re-record her first six albums to gain control of her rights to them — has a chance at the award celebrating songwriters for her 10-minute version of All Too Well. The Academy — comprised of music-makers including artists, composers and engineers — also shortlisted a coterie of the industry's enduring stars for Grammys, with Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson and Abba each garnering a handful of nominations. It's the first time an entirely Spanish-language album has a chance at that coveted award, and it's the first time the Puerto Rican reggaeton megastar has landed a solo nomination in the major Grammy categories. The star, 41, has the most chances at Grammy gold with nine nominations, following the release of

Adele, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar and Harry Styles are up for prizes at the 65th annual Grammys in LA.

But it would be glorious to see Taylor Swift, the most consequential writer of her generation, finally win this songwriting prize, after five previous attempts. Harry Styles' As It Was should be the front-runner here. The dark horse is Brandi Carlile, a musician's musician who helped bring Joni Mitchell back to the stage last year. Beyoncé is considered the front-runner this time, but Adele has an unbeatable track record, winning all of the 13 Grammys she's been nominated for since 2012. Here's a look at the line-up. The star was challenged on TikTok to compose a break-up song using the alphabet, and replied with an early version of ABCDEFU. and that he hasn't prepared a speech. Whether it deserves a Grammy nomination is another question. This year, there are a staggering 91 categories, from best new age, ambient or chant album - shout out to Cheryl B. This year, she received another nine nominations, tying her with her husband Jay-Z for the most nods collected by any artist, with 88. Proceedings then continue for eight mind-numbing hours, until the album of the year trophy is finally presented around 04:30 GMT. Will Adele continue her winning streak?

2023 Grammys live updates: Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar win early (Los Angeles Times)

Beyoncé, Adele and Harry Styles are vying for top prizes at Sunday's 65th Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena. The Premiere Ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m..

— M.W. —M.W. 1.” — Suzy Exposito Beyoncé just won the first of what should be many Grammy awards today, for dance/electronic recording for “Break My Soul,” the lead single from her sprawling ode to Black queer club culture, “Renaissance.” She joins Donna Summer, Janet Jackson and Rihanna as Black women to win this award. Kendrick Lamar just took home two Grammys for “The Heart Part 5,” winning for rap song and rap performance. Future’s “Wait for U,” which features Drake and Tems, just won for melodic rap performance. Its lead single, “Bad Habit,” ascended to the top of the Billboard 100, marking the native Angeleno’s first No. Bonnie Raitt’s “Made Up Mind” just won for Americana performance, while her song “Just Like That” won for American roots. That would be “cabrón,” which is a slang term that roughly translates to “badass.” He then regaled the crowd — and even got Taylor Swift out of her seat to dance! Not sure what to make of this panel of regular folks discussing the nominees for album of the year. Best R&B song goes to Beyoncé’s “Cuff It” — which she didn’t quite make it to Crypto.com Arena to accept. Dude could do this every year for the rest of his life — and the Grammys will probably make that happen.

But there were a lot fewer of those, and thank the Grammy gods for that.

This year, she lost to Styles for album, but also lost record of the year to Lizzo's About Damn Time, and almost unbelievably lost song of the year to Bonnie Raitt's much less well-known track Just Like That.

The queen of pop broke records – though not for the big gongs, again. But if the Recording Academy has a history of unexpected choices, this year's wins for ...

[Harry Styles](https://www.theguardian.com/music/harry-styles)’s Harry’s House beating Renaissance to album of the year doesn’t feel the same as Beck’s Morning Phase triumphing over [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/13/beyonce-album-first-review) in 2015, nor does it feel the same as if, say, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres had won this year. [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/beyonce) has only ever won one of them once – song of the year in 2010 for Single Ladies – which seems a fairly inexplicable state of affairs: you don’t need to be a rabid member of the Bey Hive to know that she’s had an immense cultural and commercial impact over the last 20 years. Under the circumstances, Samara Joy – a hugely gifted jazz vocalist, gradually emerging as a significant songwriter as well as an adept interpreter of standards – feels like a worthwhile choice: rooted in tradition, but too soulful to qualify as easy listening. The weirdest success was Bonnie Raitt’s [Just Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd0XR3twCA) winning song of the year, at least from the perspective of the UK, where the album it’s from didn’t even make the charts. Certainly they’re one of the biggest-selling groups in a field where several of the nominees didn’t even seem particularly new: Molly Tuttle’s first album came out in 2006; Tobe Nwigwe’s first EP six years ago; Muni Long is 34 and released her debut album, albeit under her real name, Priscilla Renea, in 2009. Without wishing to cast shade on those doughtily toiling away in the areas covered by the best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best new age ambient or chant album categories, the Grammys are ultimately about four awards: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.
