Liberals ditch gun law reform critics said would ban hunting rifles (Globalnews.ca)

The Liberal amendment to gun law reform Bill C-21 had faced questions about how far it will expand the scope of weapons that are prohibited in Canada.

And that’s what we’re going to make sure with fine-tuning of the legislation.” There have also been concerns about whether the criteria used to make those decisions are being consistently applied, as the definition applies only to some variations of certain models, depending on bore diameter and muzzle energy. “The definition is something that we are very much committed to. “The government’s intent is to focus on AR-15s and other assault-style weapons – not guns commonly used for hunting. The Bloc Quebecois, Provost added, should support this push. Meanwhile, a lobbyist for the pro-gun group Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights took to Twitter to call the decision “a small win in a bigger battle.” “The government needs only one opposition party to deliver on their promise to ban assault weapons and it would be unthinkable for the Bloc not to collaborate in this regard.” Hunting isn’t just a proud Canadian tradition, it’s a way of life for communities across this country. We are not. However, Trudeau said at the time that he was open to “fine-tuning” his proposed legislation to reflect the criticisms he’s heard. “We hear those concerns loud and clear, regret the confusion that this process has caused and are committed to a thoughtful and respectful conversation that is based on facts, not fear.” The move follows weeks of “considerable discussion” about the best way to move forward with the firearms restrictions, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said in a Friday statement.

"He desperately wanted to ban hunting rifles — it was a sucker punch to our lawful and licensed firearms owners," Poilievre said of the amendments. That is clear," Singh told reporters, adding the government bungled Indigenous consultation on the issue. "It's imperative we crush #C21 in its entirety. That change would have made the prohibition much more difficult for future governments to reverse. Those concerns are moot now that the government has backed down. "Good work. "We've got to accept responsibility from where we're at. Hunting isn't just a proud Canadian tradition, it's a way of life for communities across this country. Bill C-21 isn't about targeting hunters. Government House Leader Mark Holland said the government "needs more time" to consult with the firearms community before reviving some of the amendments that were scrapped — including a section that would have banned "ghost guns," which can be bought online and assembled at home. "As we've said time and again, the government's intent is to focus on AR-15s and other assault-style weapons. Faced with fierce opposition from Conservative, NDP and Bloc MPs and firearms rights groups, Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed said Friday the government is withdrawing a long list of guns that would have been classified as "prohibited" as part of a push to ban "assault-style" weapons.

22, after witness testimony on Bill C-21 before the House of Commons public safety committee had wrapped, the government tacked on the amendments that expanded the bill to cover assault-style firearms. MacGregor told reporters Friday that he would reserve judgment on any new attempt from the government to revive its legislated assault style weapons ban. MacGregor had been planning to ask the speaker to rule on their admissibility. “We acknowledge and regret that the consultations that we undertook were not sufficient, and that there were gaps and problems in the amendments. Trudeau first denied that the prohibitions would affect guns used for hunting, but then late in December acknowledged to CTV News that the government amendments would “take away” some hunting guns that are “too dangerous in other contexts.” Trudeau for not delivering on promises to enact stronger gun control welcomed the bill as the first substantive move in a generation. She said the focus should be on establishing a definition of what constitutes an assault style weapon, rather than banning individual gun models. However, the amendments had strong support from gun control groups like PolySeSouvient in part because they would have made it more difficult for a future government to reverse the Liberals’ assault-style weapons bans. Calling the amendments’ withdrawal a “small but meaningful victory,” Mr. In the face of the widespread backlash last fall, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ministers staunchly defended the amendments, which legislated a prohibition on thousands of assault-style firearms and established a legal definition of the guns that would be automatically banned in the future. That list primarily moved bans on firearms already done through regulations into legislation, but also added 482 more guns to the prohibition. The legislation was designed to freeze the sale of handguns, crack down on gun smuggling and automatically revoke firearms licenses from domestic abusers.

Don't forget there is still the airsoft ban, the handgun freeze and a variety of other measures still within C21 itself. While the House of Commons is typically quiet over the winter break with MP's heading back to their constituency offices for local matters, MP's from all parties seemed to keep the debate on these amendments alive. Amendment G46 was "the list" - over 300 pages of guns being added to the ban, or previously banned through regulation.

Bill C-21 amendments withdrawn - Ontario OUT of DOORS (Ontario OUT of Doors)

The Liberal government has withdrawn controversial amendments to firearms Bill C-21 that would have prohibited hundreds of hunting guns.

“We’re pleased that the Liberal government has recognized the negative implications of the proposed amendments and have withdrawn them from consideration. Both amendments were initially tabled without public consultation and took the public and committee by surprise at the time. The motion to withdraw them was tabled by Taleeb Noormohamed, Liberal MP for Vancouver Granville during a meeting of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security on Feb.
