'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the second instalment in the Black Panther franchise, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

It's the longest wait for a Marvel movie yet, which may not bode well for streaming Ant-Man, Guardians and The Marvels later this year.

With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set to hit theaters next month, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Disney hasn't talked about any connection in the timing, but it's possible the film's wait to start streaming was drawn out so its availability coincided with an opportunity to celebrate Black culture. The success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever means a sequel must be in the cards at Marvel Studios, with some key storylines started in Phase 4.

Ryan Coogler has many avenues that he could follow with the story for Black Panther 3, helped by some emotional and intense storylines that have started to grow in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. A deleted scene for Wakanda Forever reveals that the leader of the Border Tribe had attempted to convince Okoye to challenge for the throne of Wakanda, which could perhaps open the door for the new Midnight Angel to become Queen during Black Panther 3. This story would certainly be in keeping with Coogler's big swings during the Black Panther films and would be a great payoff for many who wished to see Victor Von Doom introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This would be the perfect progression for her character in the MCU, and it would be great to see Danai Gurira portray a powerful and charismatic Queen. Vibranium has been a key element of the MCU since its beginning since it's the metal that forms Captain America's shield, but Black Panther and Wakanda Forever stressed the fact that many of the world's governments want to get their hands on vibranium for their own purposes. Wakanda has had a rough go of it for the past few years, losing their King, T'Chaka, during Captain America: Civil War, losing T'Challa at the beginning of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and seeing Queen Ramonda drown during Namor's attack on Wakanda. The fact that Okoye and Aneka have already taken their places as two of Wakanda's Midnight Angels could create the perfect opportunity to introduce Doctor Doom as the primary villain for Black Panther 3. One of the biggest plot points during Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was Shuri's attempts to create a synthetic heart-shaped herb, which would allow the Black Panther to return to Wakanda after T'Challa's death, and Killmonger's destruction of the heart-shaped herbs in Black Panther. Wakanda Forever brilliantly set up some epic adventures for the future of Wakanda and the MCU as a whole, which could see the introduction of some much-anticipated characters during Black Panther 3 and beyond. While T'Challa's death at the beginning of Wakanda Forever made Shuri give up on her quest to create the herb, the death of her mother, Queen Ramonda, motivated her more than ever to finish her work and bring the Black Panther back to Wakanda. Queen Ramonda met her demise at the hands of Namor during Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, marking yet another major death in the emotional MCU film.

Since Shuri seemed unwilling to take over the throne of Wakanda, it was left to someone else to step up as the new leader of the nation. Queen Ramonda's death came as a huge surprise to audiences, but was incredibly important to the story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and will inform the motivation of the MCU's Black Panther going forward. It also meant that Shuri would have to step up to become Queen of Wakanda, or vacate the throne and allow someone else to take her place. After Shuri refuses to strike an alliance with Namor and the Talokanil, the mutant and his forces attack Wakanda, flooding the streets, and leading to the death of Queen Ramonda as she tries to save Riri Williams, a.k.a. Angela Bassett was given a larger role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, who previously portrayed T'Challa, the King of Wakanda, with Bassett's Ramonda stepping up to the role of Wakandan Queen, and stealing some of the most powerful moments of the project. Wakanda Forever marked the end of the MCU's Phase 4, bringing one of Marvel Studios' more light-hearted slates to a close with one of the MCU's most emotional adventures, as characters grieve the loss of T'Challa, and set out to war against the mutant Namor.

So the piece that I designed and created for the Ramonda flood scene, I intentionally, No. All around the entire piece, you see labradorite, there’s some ruby in there, some tiger’s eyes, some other stones that I intentionally put in there to just uplift this idea of the queen of Wakanda in her last moment. And I was able to do that and then allow the team to come in and build the pieces behind me. and seeing the labradorite that I chose to use, seeing how the light reflected on it when she would move in that power of the vibranium, seeing it all come together was beautiful and exciting, especially from where I started selling literally on the streets. So when I put that on, I incorporated that piece into the metal breastplate because that was my Easter egg showing that Ramonda was sitting on a legacy in her ancestry, which T'challa, he’s not her ancestor, but he has become an ancestor within this film. And it’s important to the story. It was amazing because I was able to talk to an anthropologist about the culture and the history of the Mayan people to be able to make pieces that were as realistic as possible. I wanted to put my aesthetic in it and lend to the story and the culture of Wakanda. So to be able to dig deep and discover other materials they wore and incorporate that was amazing. I wanted to put more of myself into it — the reason why I was brought onto the film. And then for building out the Mayan or Talokaneal pieces, there was so much that went into that. What was the atmosphere like in terms of creating for this film?

Only when Shuri has looked inward and processed her grief is she able to receive the gift of a nephew who shares her brother’s name. But when it is time for the young T’Challa to make his presence known to Wakanda, and to the world, it will carry an emotional charge because we know where he comes from. “A man who has not prepared his children for his own death has failed as a father”, T’Chaka tells his son in the 2018 movie. For one thing, even though Shuri has seemingly relinquished the right to the throne by the end of Wakanda Forever, there’s still more of her story to be told, and it’s likely that Coogler will want to honour that. [Black Panther](https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/black-panther-review-2/), when T’Challa converses with his father in the Ancestral Plane. The silent imagery showing the bond between T’Challa and Shuri is all the more affecting for it being the only instance in which we engage with T’Challa in the film, warming and breaking the heart in equal measure. For some, it was simply not the right time for the Black Panther mantle to be passed to another. And she certainly isn’t ready to perform the mourning ritual taught to her by her mother, Queen Ramonda ( [Angela Bassett](https://www.empireonline.com/people/angela-bassett/)), and begin to heal. That alone would have been a fitting end to the movie – but Coogler and co. Because as it turns out, the options for carving the future of Black Panther weren’t just restricted to recasting the role or having Shuri take the mantle. The tribute here is heartfelt, but the spirit of the man and the character sometimes get lost in all the bric-a-brac of the Marvel machine. Also intriguing is how Coogler and co-scripter Joe Robert Cole reinvent the Namor character from a son of Atlantis, as he was in the comics, to the successor of Mayan culture; such diversity gives the film opportunity for further representation and fresh visual invention (although the core idea of two nations of color warring each other doesn’t get much traction). All of the legends and fables? Coogler continues to rebel against some of the visually washy components of the MCU, maintaining his status as an artist with an eye for thoughtful compositions. Although Coogler’s aesthetic virtuosity renders the film at least worth watching, one gets the sense that he’s struggling to control a gargantuan vessel. Boseman and the iconic character he played are no more. Seems like a lean and mean and compelling conflict, but this being an MCU movie promising 141 minutes of bloat, it needs to be cluttered with other stuff, including: The return of CIA Agent Ross (Martin Freeman), who’s Wakanda’s man on the inside, and snarky CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus); and hey guess what, they used to bang, under the umbrella of their now-defunct holy matrimony. Performance Worth Watching: Bassett’s Oscar nod is well-deserved, stemming from two or three passionate speeches, one of which actually stands out among all the too much stuff of this movie. These water-breathing folk hail from the submerged metropolis of Talokan, which is also rich with vibranium, so, so much for Wakanda’s stranglehold on the resource, and the nation’s status as the planet’s superest political superpower. A year later, the plot begins: The United Nations pressure Ramonda to share vibranium with the rest of the planet’s powers – you remember vibranium, right? The answer is, of course, very carefully. Meanwhile, Americans use a vibranium detector on the Atlantic Ocean floor, hoping to get their grubby capitalist political-superpower hands on the valuable material, but they get the snot murdered out of them by blue-skinned underwater people who look like the Na’vi crossed with Aquaman’s pals.
