Canada's John Herdman in talks for New Zealand coaching job: report (Daily Hive)

Canadian men's national soccer team coach John Herdman could be set to leave the country in order to take another international coaching job.

Additionally, his son Jay is a midfielder on the country’s U20 youth team. Herdman led Canada through a historic 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign where they finished top of the CONCACAF group for their first appearance at the world’s biggest tournament since 1986. It is possible that Herdman is using the talks with New Zealand as a negotiation tactic to earn a better contract with Canada, as he currently remains under contract.

Fittingly, it was star man Alphonso Davies to get on the scoresheet. Canada would, however, lose the match to Croatia 4-1. New Zealand’s soccer association announced that it had a frontrunner lined up. It clearly demonstrated Herdman’s intent to stay with the Canada Men’s National Team after he helped the side reach its first World Cup since 1986. Earlier in his coaching career, Herdman worked with the women’s national team in New Zealand from 2003 to 2011. The story claimed he would be taking over the same role with New Zealand.

In the short term, Canada has two Nations League games in March against Curacao and Honduras. And even though Canada qualified for the 2022 World Cup, the men’s team is far from a finished product. Davies’ limited appearances in front of the cameras at a time when he should have been front and center led to understandable questions about his role within the team. After leading Canada's men's team to the World Cup, the national soccer organization and coach Herdman face questions about whether his future is in Canada, ...

Because now it has a big-time HR headache, and shouting at people that you feel fine, fine, totally fine is not going to make them believe you. That said, judged from the perspective of social capital, the New Zealand job is not a promotion. At the very least, making the World Cup in Qatar was supposed to graduate Canada out of this high school state of affairs. Bontis affirmed the “full confidence” of the board in Herdman, which is weird. That has the whiff of an organization protesting o’ermuch. Herdman is such a big fish in Canada’s soccer pond that he essentially runs the program. From player strikes to spats over pay to people rubbishing the organization after they’ve left, Canada Soccer has always had these twin weaknesses much worse than most. Not always, but often enough to make it a rule. To hear this story tell it, it was just a matter of fussing with details. Few coaches in the world have a gig this sweet. He’s still young (47), says he loves living here and is signed for the long term. Herdman gave a meandering answer of 1 minute 15 seconds that ended this way: “[Belgian assistant coach] Thierry Henry told me this team played [Belgium] off the park.
