Stu Cowan: Canadiens call-up Alex Belzile shows anything is possible (Montreal Gazette)

"Don't stop believing," journeyman forward, 31, says about recall from Rocket and taking an unlikely path to NHL paved by plenty of hard work.

“It’s not always the most talented guys who get here or stick,” he added. But you think about Belzile, who’s an older veteran guy who’s been a pro for a while. “I think there’s a lot,” St. Louis after last Thursday’s game what they can learn by watching the Laval Line, which combined for seven points that night. “He’s been a blast to be around. “Every night, we’re going at 100 per cent and that helps us to do good things on the ice.” [Harvey-Pinard has 3-1-4 totals in six games](https://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/habs-red-wings-roomer-2) since getting called up from Laval, while Pezzetta has 1-2-3 totals in the last four games. The ultimate challenge about hockey is to start over every day, so that’s what we’re going to do.” That’s what I’ve been doing all my life. He joined Laval for the 2018-19 season and was named Rocket captain this season. With the Canadiens going to a youth movement during a rebuild under new GM Kent Hughes, Belzile probably figured that would be it for him as far as playing in the NHL. Article content

With a number of players already on injured reserve and Beck back in Junior, we'll have to wait until game day to see how the Montreal lineup shapes up. Montreal Canadiens centre Kirby Dach collides with Ottawa Senators defenceman Thomas Chabot along the boards during second period on Jan.

Tim Stützle, who was accused by Brendan Gallagher of embellishing his injuries, is the Senators’ leading goal-scorer, with 20. They don’t play again until the Super Bowl weekend, when they are home for the traditional matinées. NHL Odds, Preview, Prediction: Senators vs. Canadiens (January 31) (The Action Network)

Greg Liodice breaks down Tuesday's NHL game between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.

The difference between the Sens and an injury-riddled Canadiens roster is pretty drastic. The content on this page is for informational purposes only. We may be compensated for the links provided on this page. Jake Allen has been on and off the IR, and Sam Montembeault may be taking sole possession of the No. Riddled with injuries, the Habs have gone 4-5-1 in their last 10, and they have lost four out of their last five. While I think there will be some motivation on Montreal’s side to correct its dreadful 5-0 loss, the Senators are just too hot right now as there’s still hope to make a playoff push. Part of the issue is I’m not crazy about D.J. Smith as head coach because looking at this roster, you can imagine why this team should contend for a playoff spot. They also sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. The Senators are an anomaly this year to me. The veteran is playing to a +0.9 GSAx and an .893 SV%. Behind Suzuki and Dach, it’s incredibly slim pickings as they don’t have anyone else scoring above 20 points.

The Habs certainly came to the dance with the intent of playing a physical game as they out-hit their rivals 42-25 on the night. Saturday was but a snippet of what the remainder of the season could be like. In Montreal’s defence, they did push as mightily as they could in the opening frame. We’ll get to the details of Saturday night’s debacle in the sections below. They covered twice and failed to three times in the last five opportunities. It is, however, the first encounter in Montreal this season.

Believe it or not, but the Canadiens are 25-25 overall ATS this season and could find themselves north of .500 in that category if they can finally string together a solid performance in tonight’s rematch versus Ottawa. While Montembault has been far from efficient this season, he is at least shown tendencies of being a good goalie thanks to his strong skill set and raw talent that he possesses. Without a doubt, Ottawa would be foolish to not ride with the hot hand in Forsberg later this evening. Currently, Tkachuk has been a huge offensive threat for the Senators as he leads the club in assists and points. When taking a closer look at Ottawa’s last few games played, they have managed to score 13 goals in 180 minutes of action and are seemingly hitting on all cylinders at just the right time. With the win, Ottawa has now won three games in a row as they look to improve upon an impressive three-game winning streak.

Stu Cowan: A welcome respite for Canadiens workhorse Nick Suzuki (Montreal Gazette)

While Habs' lone all-star will get a shorter vacation than his teammates, a few days' rest could help recharge his offensive batteries.

Just to be around the best players in the league and guys that I’ve looked up to. Just trying to make the most of it and have as much fun as I can. … That’s the grind of the NHL. The fact the Canadiens have the worst power play in the NHL, with a 14.8 per cent success rate before facing the Senators, hasn’t helped. Caufield, who leads the Canadiens with 26 goals, will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday. He had six assists during that span and a minus-13 differential, dropping his season plus/minus to minus-16 — the second worst on the team behind defenceman Joel Edmundson’s minus-21. Just trying to play consistent, generate as much as I can and play hard every night.” Suzuki has won 48 per cent of his faceoffs this season. Kirby Dach ranked second with an average of 18:13. Suzuki is the one Canadiens player who could probably use a vacation the most. They won’t be back on the ice again until next Thursday in Brossard when they will practise ahead of back-to-back Super Bowl weekend matinée games against the New York Islanders next Saturday and the Edmonton Oilers next Sunday. Senators vs Canadiens Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Giroux ... (Covers.com)

NHL odds, picks, and predictions for the Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens on January 31. NHL betting best bet and free pick analysis.

If we’re comparing it to the Saturday meeting, that game closed at 6.5 (-120) to the Under, and looking at expected goals, likely should have hit the Over. Montreal is a bad team but I’m not rushing to get the Sens at -180 — especially with the variance of this being the last game before a long break. Montreal did finish with 3.35 expected goals in the 5-0 loss, but this team is just lacking players who can finish, and if bettors like the Sens and the Over, the smarter play might be on an Ottawa team total Over 3.5. The total opened at 6.5 (-120 to the Under) and hasn’t seen much movement. The Senators are 7-1 SU in their last eight games vs. Giroux has been a point-per-game skater since December 1 and leads the team with 27 points over that stretch of 27 games. The Habs might not have the worst record in hockey, but they’re being priced as the worst team by oddsmakers and that isn’t an overreaction. The Canadiens are rolling with a bare-bones lineup and running on fumes heading into an 11-day break. the Ottawa Senators who sit 24th in points with a 23-26 SU record. He was also announced as the NHL's first star of the week with seven points over three games. He has eight points over his last four games and has recorded a helper in each one of those contests. The Sens blanked the losing-focus Habs 5-0 on Saturday as -240 favorites and sit as -180 road favorites tonight at the Bell Centre.
