Why did the Canucks sign, rather than trade, Andrei Kuzmenko? (Sportsnet.ca)

The Canucks re-signed Andrei Kuzmenko to a two-year extension, but some will wonder: should the struggling team have traded him for futures instead?

He has a fantastic release and the ability to extend plays along the wall. Of course, on a two-year term and $5.5 million AAV, this isn't a contract that will burn the Canucks as the salary cap starts to rise again. Consider that Kuzmenko is putting up this production on a $950,000 contract and that the flat cap continues to hinder teams from buying. Those championship teams have to go through a lot of trouble to win the Stanley Cup." That maybe should have been a hint Kuzmenko was more likely to stay. "He's had a career year, a career run, and he's looking for his money. "We, I believe, have taken our best shot, and the contract that we have on the table for Bo right now I think is a fair contract for what he's done up until this year," Rutherford said. Trade rumours have surrounded Horvat throughout the season, with the centre releasing a statement last month I would prefer to get younger NHL players that may not have worked out well on the entry-level contracts and bring them in to get a second chance. Additionally, he’s carrying inflated percentages in all phases of the game and shouldn’t be expected to continue to be an elite point producer over the life of this extension. With the Canucks’ current salary cap situation, it’s now very clear that the team will have to move on from Bo Horvat, whose current cap hit is US$5.5 million per season. Even so, Milstein and Kuzmenko both believe there is room for further growth in Vancouver. He currently has 43 points in 47 games but, in the latter days of Bruce Boudreaus’ tenure as coach, Kuzmenko wasn’t playing as much with Pettersson.
