'It's unacceptable': Flames fall well short in loss to lowly Blackhawks (Sportsnet.ca)

The Calgary Flames missed a glorious chance to win their third game in a row, losing 5-1 to one of the worst teams in the NHL on Thursday.

His spot was taken by Connor Mackey, a healthy scratch the last 16 games. Taylor Raddysh and Connor Murphy, into an empty net, also scored for Chicago (15-28-4), which entered the game last in the NHL's overall standings. ``The way we came out and the way we played, too many odd-man rushes. Markstrom had 24 stops for the Flames. ``We want to finish off well before the break and feel a little better about ourselves, especially after the way things went tonight.'' Jonathan Huberdeau had the lone goal for Calgary (23-17-9). ``You've got to understand that (Kane) is going to be a lot more patient with the puck and poised and make some plays you probably wouldn't think were there,'' Dickinson said. The undrafted 23-year-old is in his first pro season after signing with the Blackhawks as a free agent last March. ``They're a big team and they get to the net and they're trying to get secondary chances. With Alex Stalock (concussion) injured, Stauber and veteran Petr Mrazek are left to tend the net for Chicago. Stauber made his NHL debut on Saturday in a 5-3 win in St. His routine from right when he gets on the bus, he's pretty dialed in.''

Obviously, it's unacceptable,” assessed Calgary Flames star forward Jonathan Huberdeau. “We need these points right now.”

Philp, a former U Sports standout, wasn’t even supposed to be in Chicago’s lineup but that changed when captain Jonathan Toews was a late scratch due to a non-COVID illness … Blackhawks call-up Luke Philp, a name that will be familiar to many since he was raised in nearby Canmore and spent the past three winters in the Flames’ farm system, collected his first NHL point with an assist on Katchouk’s second-period potting. Milan Lucic was demoted to the grind line and finished the night with a minus-3 rating … “We want to finish off well before the break and feel a little better about ourselves, especially after the way things went tonight.” Moments later, Sam Lafferty was polishing off a no-doubter and a backchecking Blake Coleman was crashing into the wall, lucky to avoid injury. Patrick Kane attracted the attention of both MacKenzie Weegar and Nikita Zadorov along the side-boards, leaving Jason Dickinson to cruise down Easy Street. On the next shift, with both Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin caught up ice, Huberdeau found himself as the last man back to defend a two-on-one rush. He picked up a pass in the slot, sidestepped defenceman Jake McCabe and capped that sequence with a filthy deke to his forehand. The Kraken are currently perched atop the Pacific Division, six points up on the crew from Calgary. “They come in here and we know it’s not the best team in the league — they’re at the bottom of the standings — and we can’t disrespect that. Article content “Just not good enough from the start ’til the end,” echoed alternate captain Mikael Backlund.

Louis’ 2019 run to the Stanley Cup with 11 goals in 26 playoff games.Option B: He certainly isn’t a burner, but ‘JvR’ is one of the most reliable goal scorers available at the deadline. He’s one way for the Flames to add without breaking the bank on future assets.Option C: It was only a year ago that Barbashev crushed out a career-best 26 goals and 60 points. With a little over $4 million in projected space, even most of the high cap hit players in the league can be had with the help of a 50 percent salary retention, which mostly eliminates the need for a third-party broker and can keep the acquisition cost down. With Johnny Gaudreau on an expiring contract, general manager Brad Treliving unsurprisingly leaned in and made multiple moves to improve the Flames ahead of the trade deadline. Option A: Tarasenko is ready to move, having never rescinded his trade request from 2021, but holds all the cards with a full ‘no-trade.’ He was a critical cog in St. That number can grow depending on Kylington’s status. Here’s the thing: With extensions kicking in for Huberdeau, Weegar and Vladar, they likely can’t afford to be taking on players with term on their contracts.

2023 NHL Trade Deadline Playbook: Calgary Flames (Daily Faceoff)

The Flames are decisive and aggressive when addressing team needs. Will they make a splashy move?

He is a pending UFA, which works for Calgary, and he might be one worthy of taking a shot on to see if he can find the level he hit last season. He’s played the bulk of the season on a line with Patrick Kane and Andreas Athanasiou, two other wingers potentially on the move, including Athanasiou who has speed to burn. If that isn’t in the cards, there is a mechanism to be able to spend Kylington’s money as a non-roster player, but it will likely mean he won’t be able to rejoin the team later if he decides. Here’s the thing: With extensions kicking in for Huberdeau, Weegar and Vladar, they likely can’t afford to be taking on players with term on their contracts. He’s having one of the better seasons of his career, flirting with the pace of his 28-goal campaign from 2018-19. He certainly isn’t a burner, but ‘JvR’ is one of the most reliable goal scorers available at the deadline. The Flames didn’t make all of that noise last summer to meekly stand pat at this year’s trade deadline. Combined with Markstrom’s shaky play and tendency to give up the crushing goal, you can start to see why Calgary has been in trouble. He has missed the ‘big save’ ability this season, and yet for his struggles, Sutter has refused to hand over the crease to Dan Vladar despite superior numbers. Toffoli provided Sutter with a player he’s familiar with and his team a scoring boost from below the dots. Jacob Markstrom kicked at a .922 save percentage last year and has been eerily consistent on both sides of the holiday break with .895 and .896 splits. After Johnny Hockey walked and Matthew Tkachuk forced his way to Florida, the Flames didn’t sulk.

But late in the opening period, the Flames answered back off the rush. Blake Coleman made a diving attempt to break up the pass, but the puck glanced off his stick and went right to Lafferty anyway. It didn’t do much to give the locals a spark. It went poorly, as the Flames looked jumpy and disjointed in almost every aspect of their game and Chicago took advantage. It wasn’t a great goal to give up, but Markstrom had a lot of guys in black sweaters skating around but not doing a lot on that goal. So the Flames shuffled up their lines.

In six career games against the Kraken, Noah Hanifin has two goals and seven assists for a team-leading nine points. "We need to come out with more urgency and energy in those games and be better from the start," he said. Eberle went four games without a point before notching a pair of helpers against the Canucks. Martin Jones improved to a stunning 23-6-3 with 19 stops in the victory. They scored late in the first and then Jonathan scores to make it 1-1. "It was a big game to start with, but now it's an even bigger game," Backlund said. Jonathan Huberdeau tallied the lone Flames marker on a sensational solo effort, following a sweet setup from Nazem Kadri, but that was the only one of Calgary's 35 shots to find twine. Mikael Backlund bristled at the idea that the Flames took their Western counterparts lightly.

Flames Fit Check: January 2023 pregame outfit rankings - The Win ... (The Win Column)

Highlighting and ranking the most fashionable Calgary Flames pregame outfits from the month of January 2023.

To end this edition I’d like to ask a favour from the Flames equipment staff. The Flames knock off the Oilers in four games to advance to the Stanley Cup finals and in the handshake line Darryl asks Jay where he buys his hair dye with a slight chuckle before shaking his hand to expose diamond cuff links and wishing him good luck on the golf course. There’s fear in Jay Woodcroft’s eyes as he looks over to see a silver haired Bond manning the bench with a grizzled smirk on his face. The longer you look at this one the more it becomes a blue/black or white/gold dress debate. The bearded bandit makes it back to back months on the list with a tidy brown double-breasted suit. Beyond that, the purple pulls out the striping in the jacket. Nikita Zadorov brings a new flavour to his wardrobe with the scarf. Purple beanie matching the purple checkered scarf and tie. The kid captures top spot with a simple yet classy grey peacoat and shirt on top of some charcoal checkered pants. Upon further zooming, Im going to settle with tan coloured socks but that’s more out of hope that Dube doesn’t have an ankle injury or low iron levels contributing to the cankle situation. Kind of Wild West meets the roaring twenties with the double breasted navy suit and scarf combo. The turn of the calendar was friendly to the Flames’ wardrobes, ringing in the best edition yet.
