Review: 'Dead Space' remake gives a new voice to a recurring ... (WSIU)

Directly inspired by Resident Evil 4, Dead Space expanded on the over-the-shoulder camera and minimalist HUD. But it's the USG Ishimura's implicit storytelling that really makes it a legendary horror setting, on par with Resident Evil 2's police station or Resident Evil 1's Spencer Mansion. Over time, the game will teach you to use your growing arsenal to counter different types of Necromorphs. Sure, he opened up in Dead Space 2 and 3, but Clarke's initial silence contributed to the first game's sense of mystery and isolation. Aside from some script changes, this Dead Space plays nearly identically to the first, with updated visuals and audio that amplify its engaging and terrifying ambience. His dialogue fleshes out some of the story and characters, but it doesn't feel excessive — and he's certainly not as Both are key to survival, and switching between guns, stasis, and kinesis is — quite literally — a blast. The game also trades the original's frustrating 3D map for a 2D one, which makes it much easier to see where you're going. But while it's not exactly new, Dead Space still feels like a proper tribute to the stories that came before it, from Event Horizon to Alien. You play as Isaac Clarke, a systems engineer following a distress beacon sent by the USG Ishimura, a massive ship equipped with mining capabilities that crack open planets to extract their minerals and ores. Your vessel crashes into the Ishimura, your crew members get separated or die, and you'll soon have to fight for your life against unspeakable horrors. Bodies litter the floors, cryptic warnings written in blood cover the walls, and the few survivors have completely lost their minds.

In the original, this involved grabbing a keycard off a corpse. These are smaller tasks that have you exploring the Ishimura and filling in some of the world building details through gameplay (rather than just audio and text logs). Gunnar Wright of the original Dead Space reprised his role as Isaac for the remake. [The new Dead Space](https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23571676/dead-space-remake-review-release-date-ps5-xbox-series-x-pc) is a remake, but it’s rebuilt from the ground up. It’s a lot more atmospheric (and spooky) now with volumetric lighting. Everything from character models to the ship itself got a dramatically updated look.

Dead Space Remake Review - Hits The Marker (GameSpot)

The Dead Space remake may not feel entirely necessary, but it improves upon the original with some smart new additions to almost every aspect of its design.

Newcomers and hardcore Dead Space fans will get the most out of the experience, but this is now the quintessential way to play one of the survival horror genre's best. The generational leap isn't as grand and so much about it feels inherently familiar to the 2008 original, such is the way EA Motive has weaved its changes into the Dead Space mold. The peeling system is one facet of the remake's improved graphical fidelity, and it has a delightful impact on each combat encounter. Out of all the revised weapons, however, it's the Force Gun that stands out amongst the crowd. You might set off a trap, using the gravity well to pull a bunch of enemies into one clump before burning them all with the flamethrower or using the Plasma Cutter to break through their now bare bones. I found myself using this and the secondary fire modes on other weapons more often than I ever did in the original Dead Space, largely because they introduce an additional layer of strategy to each encounter with the ship's infestation of Necromorphs. Unlike the aforementioned upgrades, the primary fire modes for each weapon have largely remained the same as in the original game. These mods are scattered throughout the Ishimura, so you're rewarded for searching every nook and cranny of the desolate mining vessel. For starters, the zero gravity sequences now let you leap from the ground and use your suit's thrusters to freely move around each area, rather than rigidly hopping from one surface to another. Much of the script has been rewritten to accommodate Isaac's speech, and the tale it weaves is still engaging. Characters mention the infamous church in a way that feels natural, discussing the sect before they're aware of just how substantial its impact will be on future events. And after reaching the end credits myself, I'm still not entirely convinced it needs to either, yet I'm extremely happy it does.

The Dead Space remake is a grisly cut of classic horror (The Verge)

Dead Space is a remake of the 2008 space-horror shooter from now-disbanded EA studio Visceral Games, released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and ...

The closest equivalent, Dead Space creator Glen Schofield’s The Callisto Protocol, seemed almost embarrassed to be a game instead of an [unforgiving](https://www.theverge.com/23488670/the-callisto-protocol-review-playstation-xbox-pc) [interactive movie](https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/5/23494186/callisto-protocol-graphics-gameplay-survival-horror). [compared to a director’s cut](https://www.ign.com/articles/dead-space-remake-the-final-preview), but none of Dead Space’s original primary creators are involved, and the term suggests a level of deference toward designers that EA simply hasn’t shown. The Dead Space remake feels clean and good in a way that few big-budget Western titles do right now. Isaac will certainly take his share of physical and mental punishment, but Dead Space is emphatically a horror game — something to play with and master, not simply be subjected to. And between the first two games, Isaac underwent a dramatic shift from a silent masked protagonist to a character voiced by actor Gunner Wright, who plays the man as a combination of weary, snarky, and horrifically traumatized. [initially conceived as a sequel](https://www.pcgamer.com/how-resident-evil-4-turned-system-shock-3-into-dead-space/) to the exploration-heavy immersive sim System Shock 2, and although that plan was abandoned early in development, the influence feels evident in the original and carries over to the remake. But while the original Dead Space established the basic combat system, some of the series’ best elements came later. One former employee noted that even the popular Dead Space 2 had been [considered a financial failure](https://www.denofgeek.com/games/new-report-reveals-dead-space-2s-high-budget-and-low-sales/), and the odds of a new one appearing in the near future seemed small. Dead Space (2023) is most obviously a better-looking version of Dead Space (2008). While horror games have explored just about every permutation of the hideously twisted human form, Dead Space forces you to confront it with combat that feels like gruesome surgery — aided by weapons based on power tools like plasma cutters and radial arm saws as well as telekinetic powers and a time-slowing ability called stasis. The Dead Space remake isn’t the path I’d have chosen for a resurrection of one of my favorite series. And a powerful religious cult called the Church of Unitology, which is, of course,

Critics Love The New Dead Space Remake (Kotaku)

EA Motive's Dead Space remake seems just as good (or better) than the original survival horror hit.

[compared to a director’s cut](https://www.ign.com/articles/dead-space-remake-the-final-preview), but none of Dead Space’s original primary creators are involved, and the term suggests a level of deference toward designers that EA simply hasn’t shown. The improvements on offer here are substantial, but no remake could succeed to this extent without a rock-solid foundation. In essence, the former portrays the game at its best-looking, in 4K UHD resolution with ray-tracing, but with a 30fps capped framerate. There are new rooms tucked in amongst the old layouts - add-on chambers for a handful of side missions that deepen the fates of certain characters, including Dr Mercer and his awful Hunter. But it is just a part of Motive’s re-engineering: Weapons, characters, and progression have all been rethought, resulting in the best possible version of Isaac Clarke’s trek through a veritable hell — and hopefully the revival of a horror game franchise that flamed out too soon. Yet, despite its strange origins, [2008’s Dead Space](https://kotaku.com/dead-space-review-true-stories-of-space-horror-5068557) would go on to become a massive hit for EA and would become a favorite among survival horror fans due to its creepy, atmospheric horror and ammo-counting action. The peeling system is one facet of the remake’s improved graphical fidelity, and it has a delightful impact on each combat encounter. And this newest Dead Space is also likely to become a classic among fans of the genre, thanks to its [impressive next-gen visuals](https://kotaku.com/new-dead-space-remake-will-be-next-gen-only-1847344189), improved controls, expanded narrative, and the added attention to detail. The exception is a surprising change to a memorable moment later in the game – a rework that makes more sense in context to the point that I now prefer it over its original incarnation. Dead Space’s main man is humanized even further in the remake by his ability to talk, rather than merely accept his crewmates’ orders without so much as a silent nod of acknowledgment like he did in the original. But, meanwhile, here’s what other reviews and critics are saying about the latest entry in the Dead Space series. And reviews from various sites around the net suggest the remake is something very special, elevating the original while remaining true to what made the creepy space game so beloved all those years ago.

A remake can also recreate the old game exactly how it was (just with shinier graphics). It makes sense when we consider the fact that it's still a linear game. However, the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes (for the main storylines at least) weren't that much longer than the originals. A remake can stretch set pieces, add new scenarios, and turn tiny maps into atlases – the gaming equivalent of what Peter Jackson did with The Hobbit.

Dead Space remake review roundup (GamesHub)

Reviews for the remake of Dead Space, the classic sci-fi horror game, are very positive. But was it all necessary? The jury's still out.

‘While this is a meticulous and appreciative reworking, a little too much of it seems designed to get in the original’s way, to blur its focus and mutate it into an appendage of the omnivorous franchise operation it would become, where everything needs to be written into an on-going narrative backdrop, and genuine ambiguity is minimised. All of which mainly makes me want to play a new non-remade Dead Space game in 2023 with this production quality. That said, many critics wrestled with their feelings on some of the changes to the game, and whether the game needed to exist at all. It’s easily one of the best modern horror games, and the fresh lick of paint to really bring its grimy, snarling interpretation of sci-fi horror into sharp new relief is very welcome, especially when it maintains such faith in the source material.’ And after reaching the end credits myself, I’m still not entirely convinced it needs to either, yet I’m extremely happy it does. The studio was notably founded by Glen Schofield, who played a significant role in the original Dead Space at Visceral.

Dead Space’s main man is humanised even further in the remake by his ability to talk, rather than merely accept his crewmates’ orders without so much as a silent nod of acknowledgement like he did in the original. The monsters in Dead Space aren’t the only things with more meat on their bones, and indeed Isaac’s story has been fleshed out with satisfying new helpings of extra detail. While the layout for each weapon upgrade tree remains similar in terms of interface, all of the pointless empty slots have been removed, meaning there’s a tangible benefit for each and every power node you choose to invest, whether it’s a boost to clip capacity, reload speed, rate of fire, or damage. It’s smart to introduce a ‘no money down’ test drive of Dead Space’s seven weapon types particularly for newcomers to the series, even though I admittedly settled on the same powered-up Plasma Cutter, Line Gun, and Force Gun combo that I employed in my multiple playthroughs of the original game. There are countless other comparatively minor but equally as welcome upgrades, too – like the way triggering an objective marker actually angles the camera towards a waypoint rather than unhelpfully towards your feet, or how you can buy multiples of any given item in the store at once instead of being forced into a series of individual transactions, or how you can now manipulate doors and control panels while holding up an object with kinesis – the latter of which gave me the option of carrying an explosive canister between rooms in anticipation of an ambush. A spectacular new zero-gravity detour that takes you from the hangar bay to engineering is just one area that takes advantage of far more liberating flight controls that allow you to manually steer Isaac through space, as opposed to beaming him in rigid straight lines from surface to surface. But in doing so I had to sacrifice the lighting system, meaning my journey back out of the area was illuminated solely by the narrow beam of torchlight on Isaac’s Plasma Cutter, making for a considerably more panic-inducing trip as each necromorph flashed into my restricted field of view. Enemy types resemble the same gaggle of ghouls that seem to have been plucked right off John Carpenter’s Pinterest board, but there have been a few welcome tweaks made to the variety of threats you have to encounter. Additionally, the storage rooms in the original game that could only be accessed by spending a precious power node are thankfully no more; instead, gaining access to them requires a bit of enjoyable environmental puzzle solving, like finding the right angle through a shattered window in order to disable a door’s locking mechanism with a pinpoint shot. It sets its strategic brand of slaughter onboard a doomed spaceship that seems straight out of [Event Horizon](/movies/event-horizon), and focuses on the determined plight of engineer Isaac Clarke and his increasingly disturbing search for his scientist wife Nicole.

I hope this exceptional revision signals to EA that Dead Space has plenty of gas in the tank and becomes a harbinger for more horrifying stories in this universe." "Dead Space is a visually stunning remake that is both faithful to the original, and modernizes what it needs to. Thanks to Motive, I'm now more open to the idea of Xbox 360-era remakes, and I can't wait to see what's on the cards for Dead Space 2." Despite the fact I've returned to the 2008 original several times over the years and found it to hold up fairly well, my latest journey through the darkened hallways of the USG Ishimura still managed to consistently surprise me and pull me into Isaac's plight far more than ever before, while still satisfying my desire to butcher undead astronauts with an enjoyable arsenal of wildly unsafe mining tools." "It's impossible to expect the Dead Space remake to be as transformative as something like the Resident Evil 2 remake was.

Dead Space remake beginner's guide: 7 things to know before you ... (Polygon)

The Dead Space remake rebuilds the 2008 game from the ground up. Our Dead Space beginner's guide will get you (back to) stomping necromorphs in space.

Using the canisters not only saved on a ton of ammo, it made a deadly wave of enemies manageable. If a necromorph dies in an explosion (see above), they tend to take enough damage to drop the item without a stomp. Shooting one makes it explode where it is, and throwing one with Kinesis makes it act more like a grenade. Speaking of ammo, you’re not quite done with a necromorph once you shoot off its limbs and put it down. Stasis slows time, and Kinesis allows you to pick up and throw objects. Within the first couple hours, Isaac will pick up two new ways to interact with the world: the Stasis and Kinesis abilities. Some are as simple as a nice musical swell when you pick up the plasma cutter for the first time or new ways for the game to play with lighting (or the lack thereof). They weren’t in the original, though, so they’ll be a bit of a surprise even if you played the original. Be patient, look everywhere for stuff to pick up (a lot more on this below), and do your best to suppress your instincts to blindly fire at every scary sound. You’re probably never going to be flush with ammo or health packs (especially early on), and anything you do pick up will get used right away. All the story beats, enemies, mechanics, and abilities are the same, but there are a few details that have changed. Considering that people born the same year as Dead Space are in high school now, it’s probably time for a refresher even if this isn’t your first time on the USG Ishimura.

How Long To Beat Dead Space Remake - Chapter List And New ... (GameSpot)

Dead Space is back, and bigger than you may remember. Here's how long it takes to finish.

The game will give you a clear point-of-no-return warning in Chapter 11, so if you'd prefer to leave them until the end, that's totally an option--it just comes with lots of backtracking. Naturally, that leaves players wondering how long it takes to best the Dead Space remake, as the answer is not likely what it was way back in 2008. In fact, in the form of the Dead Space remake, it's arguably more than whole, with EA Motive bringing to life the game's classic atmosphere while adding new side missions, voice work for the lead character Isaac Clarke, and more.

Dead Space (Remake) Review - To Remake Whole Again - Game ... (Game Informer)

Like a necromorph reanimating the dead, Motive Studios has revived Dead Space and made it stronger and more terrifying than before.

Dismembering limbs is more satisfying and strategic thanks to the new necromorph damage system, in which layers of skin, muscle, and bone fall apart. The exception is a surprising change to a memorable moment later in the game – a rework that makes more sense in context to the point that I now prefer it over its original incarnation. Whether you’re blanketed in pitch darkness with only your weapon’s flashlight for illumination or basking in the eerily warm glow of planet Aegis VII orbiting outside a window, the lighting serves as the presentational glue that makes this graphical facelift work. The Ishimura and its mutated inhabitants look great, and traversing the blood-stained corridors is even more harrowing thanks to the show-stealing lighting. The result is a remake that faithfully recaptures the magic of its predecessor while amplifying the elements that made it beloved in the first place. In addition to stopping this extraterrestrial menace and untangling a conspiracy centering on a theistic cult, Clarke must also uncover the fate of his girlfriend, Nicole, a doctor stationed on the ship.

Will there be a Dead Space 2 remake? (Dexerto)

The Dead Space remake is in the books, but will EA now remake Dead Space 2, or will they do something completely different?

[Dead Space remake voice cast](https://www.dexerto.com/gaming/dead-space-voice-actors-for-all-characters-full-cast-2040334/) [Dead Space review](https://www.dexerto.com/reviews/dead-space-review-sci-fi-survival-horror-at-its-most-gruesome-2042624/) [Dead Space New Game Plus](https://www.dexerto.com/gaming/does-dead-space-have-a-new-game-plus-2041531/) [Dead Space ending explained](https://www.dexerto.com/gaming/dead-space-remake-ending-explained-what-is-the-marker-2038652/) [Dead Space everything different in the remake](https://www.dexerto.com/gaming/dead-space-remake-everything-different-from-the-original-2041590/) [Capcom has a similar issue](https://www.dexerto.com/opinion/should-capcom-remake-resident-evil-5-next-2015156/) now when it comes to what game to remake next. It largely depends on the success of the Dead Space 1 remake and if EA decides to make more remakes instead of a sequel. Of course, this is only a pipedream at the moment, as there’s been no official word from EA, but it’s more likely as of 2023 than it has been since Dead Space 3 was released in 2013. Naturally, EA hasn’t commissioned a remake of Dead Space to abandon the series again, the remake exists to breathe new life into the franchise. Interestingly, the publisher shipped a copy of the original Dead Space 2 with Steam pre-orders. The original Dead Space fits into this group nicely, the only question is – what happens now? Or will they finally get around to making a Dead Space 4 if the remake is successful?

The Dead Space Remake Doubles Down on the Gross-Out Horror ... (Esquire.com)

Easily one of the most frightening video games ever made, Electronic Arts' space-survival-horror title built upon the successes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill ...

and it’s a testament to the extremity of the game that I’m about to write these words… A press release from EA mentions that new game features an “expanded and enriched narrative.” According to the writer, Jo Berry, this means, “looking at the story with an entire franchise’s worth of hindsight. As MacMillan explains, with relish, “Rather than cut off a limb with a couple of blasts, we’re now able to peel the skin and the muscle and the sinew off that limb. I’m still in the earliest stages of the Dead Space 2023, so it’s hard to say whether or not the game has sprung this new trap on me yet. [Game of Thrones](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a42217891/kit-harington-jon-snow-game-of-thrones-sequel-series/), Hannibal and The Walking Dead led, [HBO’s adaptation of ](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a42443510/the-last-of-us-review-hbo/) [The Last of Us](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a42443510/the-last-of-us-review-hbo/) follows. Is this version of the game scarier? The Ishimura’s interior is a series of harsh metallic tunnels and shadow-strewn decks. However, when you tilt Isaac’s flashlight into the corner of a room, only to find a Lurker crawling furtively toward you along the wall, all comparisons are forgotten. Now, faced with the graphical capabilities of my PS5, and the fact that my wife is unlikely to offer the same moral support, the game may be too much to handle. Violent horror is having a moment across a whole slew of visual media—and the audience’s appetite for blood has been freshly awoken. Likewise, televisual horror—emboldened by the looser regulations and deep pockets of the major streaming services—is going for our collective throats. And this is no mere remaster, repackaged with a patina of improvement.
