"But that being said, it's not the end all, be all." "It's unreal, especially to have it right here in Langley," said the 6-foot-4, 208-pound pivot, who just turned 18 in December. Still, players can't afford to coast when many of them have a lot on the line, barely five months out from the highly anticipated 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville in late June. "A lot of it was just trusting (coach) Mike (Johnston's) plan that he gave me," said Cagnoni. "They picked me up when I went undrafted, so obviously it's a special place in my heart," said Cagnoni, who has put up 39 points in 41 games with the Winterhawks so far this season. At the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, he has yet another national stage to do it on. Beyond Bedard and Benson, there are no other players inside the top 20 on NHL Central Scouting’s most recent rankings on Team Red's roster. [@WHLPats]captain Connor Bedard spoke with the media ahead of the 2023 [@KubotaCanadaLtd]CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game. Usually those two are battling on opposite sides of the ice, which makes Bedard a little more relieved they can be on the same side for once. An especially mature 17-year-old, Bedard always seems to find a way to show up when the spotlight is brightest. "I prepare the same way every single game," Bedard said. If he couldn't top all of that, he's currently in the midst of one of the most productive seasons the WHL has seen in 30 years. Bedard is the top scorer in all of the CHL with a staggering 81 points and 39 goals in just 33 games. Now you're seeing every fan base of NHL teams at the bottom of the standings cringe with every win and silently (or not so silently) fist pump when their favorite team loses. The CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game will feature 40 high-end prospects eligible for the 2023 NHL Draft including North Vancouver native and No. Few 17-year-old hockey players have ever seen the level of attention, expectation and hope that has surrounded Bedard for more than a year now. He’s the guy everyone wants to see and he’s the one even all the other players have to answer questions about.

Scott Wheeler's notebook from two games that serve as important measuring sticks for the top prospects in this year's draft class.
There were questions coming in about whether he’d even play in the game and then he was great. He was a little quiet in the first and third but had a couple of looks in each (naturally) and plenty of opportunities in the second. He scored the opening goal getting open in the slot and leaning into that hard catch-and-release wrister of his to rip it off the post and in. F Oliver Moore: With the NTDP’s top line playing opposite him on Team Blue, the game was an opportunity for Moore to be the guy for Team Blue and really own the moment and that’s exactly what he did. Didn’t end up on the scoresheet but in a game that seemed to lack skill his was on display. F Luca Pinelli: Had one of the best shifts of the game, where I counted three shots on goal without the puck leaving the offensive zone and a couple of retrievals to get it back as well as a couple moments of deception. Some of the quickest in the draft. Pinelli probably would have been my player of the game for White, but Rehkopf was a deserving recipient. Got rewarded after a few other shifts like that when he popped loose and scored from the slot on a nice catch-and-release. He displayed some soft touch in the game too and set up Benson’s late goal with a nice play from below the goal line. That was all you needed to see for the rest of the week. I thought he was Red’s most noticeable player offensively throughout so it was nice to see him get rewarded for it with a goal from the slot in the final minute.

He won the ensuing puck battles and took the play to the net. He was above the play when his team didn’t have the puck and worked effectively along the boards and around the net. The Flint Firebird forward plays quick and fast and he can be a threat off the rush. Off the rush he displayed his speed and long reach as elements that can translate to the NHL game. • The Guelph Storm have played better as a team for an extended period of time and defenceman Cameron Allen is part of the reason they are improving. He was held off the scoresheet and ended the game a minus-2. Benson isn’t a pure burner in open ice or in transition, but he’s elusive when he cuts back and across the seem. Lind was celebrating his 18th birthday last night and left scouts with a massive impression of what he can bring to the team that drafts him. His was especially impressive in the second period, though. He clocked in for the full 60 minutes and dropped the mitts with Sudbury Wolves forward Alex Pharand. With the game out of reach for Team Red, Lind blocked a shot with less than two seconds left off the stick of Bedard. His infectious energy and compete was noticeable every time he rolled over the boards.

Connor Bedard was the center of attention during the 2023 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at Langley Events Centre on Wednesday.
"I want to win in Regina," he said. "He's right up there with those players that are going to be all stars and win a lot of hardware moving forward." Bedard said his focus now returns to Regina, where he leads the WHL in goals (39), assists (42) and points (81). "He's just so dynamic, and he's just good from anywhere," Ratzlaff said. With Team Red on the power play in the first period, he wheeled through the high slot and fired a shot on net that Ratzlaff saved. "It was good to get him off the ice for two minutes for our guys." It's a contact sport and you're going to get hit and you're going to give hits. "Keeping him off the scoreboard, that was kind of a team goal," Team White goalie Scott Ratzlaff said. 1 in NHL Central Scouting's midterm ranking of North American players presented by BioSteel and almost a certainty to hear his name called first at the 2023 draft at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on June 28. "I'll have a good amount of people there," Bedard said before the game. Bonk said the back-and-forth wasn't anything malicious, more about the respect for Bedard's ability to take over a game. It was a good show for family and friends.
