The new 2023 nationwide Bell Let’s Talk multimedia campaign – Let’s change this – highlights the mental health crisis Canadians are facing in very real and personal ways and issues a collective call to action and change. It’s time we take action to protect, promote and strengthen mental health for all. We’re happy to see Bell’s action-oriented work through Bell Let’s Talk Day, uniting Canadians around the value and need for mental health supports. “As a country, we have made great progress in moving mental health forward, and changed attitudes and behaviours around mental illness, but despite these gains, we must all do more to address the mental health crisis in Canada. Now is the time to come together, to take action and show support for mental health in meaningful and impactful ways to help ensure all Canadians can access the mental health and addiction supports they need to flourish. As part of Bell’s own actions and to mark a new era for Bell Let’s Talk, a fundamental shift is taking place in this year’s campaign.

"We welcome Bell's support for mental health. Too many people experiencing mental health issues do not receive the care they need. 'We need the involvement of the entire community to create a society in which everyone's mental health is validated and nurtured'
I fervently hope that a good portion of this funding is funnelled to community groups as they support people where they live — in the community. Events such a Bell Let's Talk are valuable and should serve as a jumping-off point for a broader discussion of how we, as a society, address the challenges of mental health. More importantly, it would connect people to the community in which they live and build community resources, normalize reaching out for help with mental health and create safe spaces where the stigma that some still feel towards mental health can be addressed. This is an awareness that we need to carry throughout the year and mental health care involves a lot more than just medical care by professionals. Several years ago, the organization I work for received funding from Bell to train staff in the use of horticultural therapy, which allowed staff from various worksites to avail of training from an expert in Ontario. While it was great to learn new ways to help people develop better coping skills, the challenge is finding ways to maintain good programs once they have been initiated.
