On the morning of Oscar nominations, Variety spoke to this year's contenders about getting recognized by the Academy.

She’s like, “Just believe it.” So I was like, “OK.” I have to go to work today. But I was shocked that it was the first nomination, so that made me nervous. Well, I was nervous because it was the first nomination. I didn’t have to go to work the next day. I tried to zen out, but I woke up at 3:45.

Angela Bassett Nearly Missed Her Oscar Nomination for 'Black ... (The New York Times)

The sleepless actress had trouble with the television, but tuned in just as her category was being unveiled. “I'm glad I showed up on time,” she said.

It wasn’t as sad as it was the day I reckoned it was going to occur. This was not the moment to fall down, but this was to use all of that love, all those emotions that we felt for him, all those memories that we have of him, and to put it into the work and to make it, hopefully, as special as he is. Saying yes to what excites you about the work and individuals, and it will always continue to be that way. It’s not the first time for me, the same is true of “Waiting to Exhale” [1995], that was a first and led by four Black women. She has been nominated before — she was up for lead actress nearly three decades ago for the Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It” — but said she was humble and grateful to be recognized for her supporting role in “ [Black Panther: Wakanda Forever](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/09/movies/black-panther-wakanda-forever-review.html).” I was trying to turn the television on, and I couldn’t figure it out. I’m very proud that the film focuses and is led by Black women. I was prepared for that day, of course, you knew it was coming up. So I’m comfortable with it, I’m thrilled by it and I hope it will teach Black girls, we’re winning. So I was like, “But what time is it?” and looked at the clock. on my own, and tried, tried tried to go back to sleep and just couldn’t. I thought I was going to miss it.

Angela Bassett's Performance in This 90s Movie Should Have Won ... (Collider.com)

Angela Bassett's performance in this 1995 movie absolutely deserved Academy Awards recognition. Angela Bassett as Mace and Ralph Fiennes as Lenny in Strange ...

Bassett does an incredible job at showing the confused emotions that flash before Mace’s eyes; she’s given into the chaos, as she knows that this is a revolutionary moment that needs to occur in the most public way possible. Mace and Lenny's interactions are fraught with a friction that at first seems to be purely because of how obnoxious the black market trader is; he invades Mace’s privacy while she’s at work, demanding that she listen to his wild story about witnessing the murder of Iris. As you may expect from a film that focuses on the conception of memory, there’s a lack of background details about the characters at first that is slowly unraveled as the story continues through flashbacks. This is brought to life in vivid detail through Bassett’s nuanced performance; she carries a justified anger within her that she’s kept buried beneath her demeanor, and in the film’s most heartbreaking moments we see her own experiences with the cops that shaped her cold attitude. The illegal device trader Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) begins to investigate the death of the prostitute Iris (Brigitte Bako), and realizes that he’s witnessed just part of a larger conspiracy involving the police force and generations of coverups.
