Penguins' Winner Waved Off; Devils Score PPG for OT Win (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins thought they had the game winner, but Marcus Pettersson was too many men and the New Jersey Devils won 2-1 in OT...

[ Early in the third period, it appeared Ryan Poehling, who played in his first game since Dec. Jeff Petry led all players with four shots on goal. Crosby (22) worked a give-and-go with defenseman Jeff Petry at the top of the zone and blasted a quick shot through traffic from near the blue line. The Penguins yielded a two-on-one on the first shift, Penguins defenseman Mark Friedman nullified a three-on-two with a surprise step-forward hit at the defensive blue line on the second shift. He got his wish, and the teams hit overtime, tied 1-1.

Penguins Once Again Come Up Short in Overtime (Sports Illustrated)

Afternoon hockey and the Pittsburgh Penguins usually don't get along, but they were forced to deal with a 2:00 p.m. puck drop against the New Jersey Devils.

[bookmark Inside the Penguins ](http://insidethepenguins.com/)for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! The Devils claimed the extra point with a goal on the ensuing power play; despite the loss in overtime the Penguins earned a standings point in their third consecutive game. With another bonus point on the line, the Penguins had themselves a tough start to the bonus frame. Shortly following that save the Penguins went down and looked to score the game winner but were instead assessed a penalty for too many men on the ice. The Penguins got that goal back during a 4-on-4 situation with a rare looking goal from Sidney Crosby. For the second straight game, the Penguins got healthier with the return of Ryan Poehling to the fourth line.

Game Preview #46: New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (All About The Jersey)

After an overtime loss to Seattle ended the winning streak, the Devils look to find more success at The Rock.

Seven players on the Penguins have 10 or more goals — and six of them are in the expected top six tonight. I think the second pairing of Brian Dumoulin and Mark Friedman is the pairing the Devils should have the most success against — I do not really view them as a second pair-caliber partnership. If the Devils play their best group of centers, they should eat Pittsburgh bottom six alive. This was the lineup the Pens used last night in the win vs OTT. These were the lines in that game: In their last ten home games, the Devils are 2-6-2, with their only wins coming against the Rangers on January 7 and the Blackhawks on December 6.

"We were coming off a good road trip (4-0-1), and this was the first of four games in six days," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. "I was playing that rush so I kind of knew right away that it wasn't a legal play," Hamilton said. "It's seven wins, but I'm trying to not think about that coming into the game," Vanecek said. "It's pretty hard to score on a goalie from that far out, so I just tried to shoot as hard as I could, and happy it went in."

Kevin Hayes scored two goals and Ivan Provorov added one for the Flyers. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets, and David Rittich made 28 saves. Penguins Need More From Teddy Blueger (Sports Illustrated)

To single out any singular player feels kind of wrong when guys like Jeff Carter, Danton Heinen, and Kasperi Kapanen have not scored at the rate the Penguins ...

Somehow, the Penguins are going to need Blueger to generate some more offense. Surely, he is a solid penalty killer and bottom-six guy but the Penguins traded noted penalty-killer Zach Aston-Reese last season and their penalty kill hadn’t really missed a beat. [bookmark Inside the Penguins ](http://insidethepenguins.com/)for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! However, players can be found from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and on the cheap in free agency - see Archibald, Josh - to fill that type of role. In recent seasons, they’ve had a handful of passengers and Blueger has been no exception to that this season. Management has privately expressed their frustration with his inability to get back to the level of play he was at prior to the injury. Blueger has 32 goals in 236 career NHL games so he isn’t lighting the lamp with any sort of rapid frequency across his career to date. For context, no other regular forward on the Penguins sits lower than 5.9% and that figure is from Danton Heinen…who hasn’t scored since October. That production could certainly be higher for a fourth line center but as the third line center? That is all fine and dandy and something the Penguins and head coach Mike Sullivan surely appreciate. The current four center alignment figures to be the new norm when they get their full complement back. If the top-six doesn’t produce, the Penguins have lost most nights.

Trading Ty Smith Makes No Sense for Penguins (Sports Illustrated)

One of those names that shouldn't go anywhere is a young Penguins defenseman who has already been put into an awkward position. Ty Smith has played in nine NHL ...

[bookmark Inside the Penguins ](http://insidethepenguins.com/)for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! Smith has all the tools needed to be a key feature on the Penguins blue line for years to come. The Penguins also likely don’t want to give up on Smith that quickly; they just acquired him this past offseason and has so much to prove. Sure, Smith would catch the Penguins a great return that they could use this year, but there are other players more deserving to be dealt. It would be smart for the Penguins to give Smith a new contract this offseason to guarantee his spot as an NHL regular starting in 2023-24. Through the 2022-23 season, Smith has shown to have phenomenal potential as a key piece on the Penguins blue line.
