Can Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn design exotic blitz packages and a defensive game plan that can rattle the rookie quarterback and limit the production from San Francisco’s three primary playmakers? The 49ers gashed Dallas for 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns on offense and the San Francisco defense sacked Prescott five times and tallied 14 QB hits. He had the most passing yards by a rookie in their first playoff game since 1937. The 49ers corners are the weaknesses to an overall stout defense. On the other side of the ball, San Francisco’s defensive front seven is arguably the best in the NFL. The 49ers and Cowboys will tie an NFL record by squaring off for a ninth time in the postseason. [Dak Prescott](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/bell/2023/01/17/dak-prescott-cowboys-nfl-playoffs-buccaneers/11066139002/) compiled 305 passing yards and four touchdowns, resulting in a 143.3 passer rating in last week’s [31-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2023/01/16/dak-prescott-dallas-cowboys-clobber-tampa-bay-buccaneers-playoff/11065990002/). [just allowed 136 yards and two touchdowns to DK Metcalf last week](https://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/401438000). Lamb has emerged as a bona fide stud this season with 10 touchdowns. Plus, the 49ers’ defense allowed 28 rushing yards to Geno Smith last week and 34 rushing yards to Jarrett Stidham in Week 17, so I think Prescott will get there. George Kittle is the trendier name and has been finding the end zone more, but Aiyuk is the most targeted receiver. The 49ers have the best run defense in the league, and it’s pretty clear that Zeke is just a short-yardage type of back now who lacks the same agility and lateral quickness. We break down our top player props from the showdown.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys need to be aware of it all. Whether it was bad officiating or lack of discipline, the Cowboys have shown a slight improvement in that department. That's where the magic happens.— Dan Rogers (@DannyPhantom24) Drew attention to free up teammate on sack before one for himself. A rematch of last year’s classic game, setting up for what will be the ninth meeting all-time between the two franchises. There are some differences on both teams this year, starting with the location. He backed that up Monday. For a defense that finished fifth in pressures, first in pressure rate and third in sacks, they will need the front seven (and Donovan Wilson) to get to QB Brock Purdy and make life uncomfortable. [Six QB pressures and no sacks.](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/202201160dal.htm) That’s the entire defensive output from the Dallas Cowboys defense in last year’s game. The Cowboys will play as visitor to the 49ers coming off a blowout home win against the Seattle Seahawks, as the Cowboys won in blowout style on the road. Only the third to not be in the NFC Championship game. The Dallas Cowboys take on the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs.

"The 49ers have hit the Over in four straight games now, and are 10-8 to the Over on the year. The 49ers had the easiest strength of schedule in the NFL this year and half their wins came in a bad division (Including the playoffs, they went 7-0 against NFC West teams and 7-4 against everyone else). This is the lowest total on the board this weekend, so I'm going to take the Over and root for points." Tony Pollard’s dual threat ability will be crucial here as he can punish the linebackers for stacking and pressing through the middle. Get your popcorn ready NFL fans, this will be a fun one. If the money to have a standalone game on Monday was too great, the NFL could have scheduled the other two NFC games as Sunday games to minimize the difference for the winner of Sunday’s game. NFL schedule-makers have tried to avoid that as much as possible in the regular season lately. Instead, the league made sure that there was something for everyone on Saturday and Sunday. In order to garner more attention, the NFL scheduled one game to be played on Monday night with the other five games taking place between Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, the solution for the NFL may not have been as profitable as seeing Tom Brady square off with “America’s Team” on Monday night. While many may focus on the entertainment aspect of that statement, the business of the NFL has always been the primary focus.
This live account of the San Francisco 49ers' divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys will be updated frequently from the press box.
The 49ers should take advantage of this matchup as much as possible. The 49ers don't have to sell out to sack Prescott -- doing so will allow him to scramble for big gains. So when the 49ers face Dallas' base defense, Parsons will have to cover Christian McCaffrey, and that's a huge advantage for the 49ers.

Dallas did so against Tampa Bay last Monday night, and they will need to do so again in the Divisional Round. In our 15-minute visit this week with Dan Quinn, he must've used the word "attach'' a half-dozen times. Can Quinn make Purdy uncomfortable in the pocket and throw some things at the rookie that he hasn't seen before? No missed tackles and once a Cowboys player gets hands on a 49ers player, don't let go. [Dak and head coach Mike McCarthy have stated that this week](https://www.si.com/nfl/cowboys/news/dallas-cowboys-jacked-san-francisco-49ers-challenge-mike-mccarthy-playoffs-nick-bosa-preview). Prescott and his running ability can be a viable weapon, and we saw as much in Tampa. Prescott had seven rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown. By "attach,'' he means tackling. Keep Dak Prescott upright: This, as much as anything will have a significant bearing on the game's outcome. The 49ers' defense sacked Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith three times last week, which can't happen to Prescott on Sunday night. No turnovers: We said this last week and look what happened. Taking the crowd out of the game as early as possible is a perfect tonic for winning.

It's a second-quarter problem for the Cowboys as Pollard has exited the playoff game at San Francisco with what looks like a nasty injury.
If that wasn't enough, the 49ers lead the league in interceptions (20) and have 44 sacks on the season. So if the running game can't get going, the 49ers' defense can make Prescott pay for any missteps. That alone suggests a tough outing for the Cowboys. It was Prescott's second touchdown of the half. The kick was blocked, but it appeared to be going off course after connecting with his foot. The 49ers opened the scoring in the first quarter with a field goal by Gould before the Cowboys took the lead early in the second with a Dak Prescott-Dalton Schultz four-yard touchdown connection.

And in the fourth, he hit a 43-yard field goal, trimming the Cowboys' deficit to 16-12. [Tampa Bay Buccaneers](/nfl/team/_/name/tb/tampa-bay-buccaneers), Maher missed four PAT attempts, the most in one game since 1932. He went 1 of 5 in the game. He also made a 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to close the Cowboys' deficit to 16-12. But in the third quarter, Maher converted a 25-yard field goal to tie the game at 9 apiece.

Oh, and he did struggle to make the kicks as well. He then attempted a 43-yarder with Dallas trailing, 16-9, with about 11 minutes to play, and that too was good -- building some momentum in a tightly contested contest. A little drama in Cowboys-49ers pregame: Niners apparently took offense to Cowboys kicker Brett Maher warming up on side of field, stepping in middle of his operation to interrupt drill. (He did convert the extra point on Dallas' fifth touchdown.) Maher had gone 50 of 53 on extra points during the regular season, as well as 29 of 32 on field goals. On the fourth kick, he hit the outside of the upright. On each of the Cowboys' first four touchdowns, Maher missed the extra point. And apparently, he had a rough go of it during warmups. "I talked to him individually after the game, just told him, 'Hey let that go, we're going to need it' I just played like s--- a week ago, so that happens.
San Francisco (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Cowboys' playoff drive was ended Sunday night in San Francisco when the 49ers fought through a physical game to ...
The Cowboys' season comes to a close after they are unable to overcome early mistakes, untimely penalties and key injuries in a 19-12 loss to the 49ers.
And by forcing a punt, the Dallas defense at least gave the offense one last shot. The Cowboys were able to prevent them from crossing the goal line, but the 49ers added another three points on Gould's 28-yard field goal. Taking possession at their own 18-yard line, the Cowboys went a quick three-and-out and desperately needed a defensive stop. Though starting at their own 9-yard line, Purdy and company worked their way down the field, helped along by three Dallas penalties, including a holding call on third-and-8 at the Cowboys' 20-yard line that moved the chains. Dallas was able to work down to the 7-yard line, but when the offense could advance no farther, out came Maher. When Prescott moved the chains on a fourth-and 4 scramble, Dallas had the ball at San Francisco's 26-yard line. An eventual 21-yard pass from Purdy to wideout Jauan Jennings put them at the Cowboys' 32-yard line, giving Gould a chance at a 50-yard field goal. There the Cowboys held the line, leaving it to Robbie Gould to kick the 47-yard equalizer. But in the end, the 49ers would hold the advantage on the stat sheet as well, outgaining Dallas, 312-282, and holding the time of possession, 32:53 to 27:07, while committing only three penalties for 30 yards to the Cowboys' seven for 50. And the Dallas defense largely held the 49ers' potent running attack in check, Christian McCaffrey gaining just 35 yards on 10 carries with the team as a whole totaling 113. And keeping with tradition, the game was a physical battle from start to finish with each side unwilling to give an inch. Helped by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness call on cornerback DaRon Bland, San Francisco used 10 plays to reach the Dallas 29-yard line.

He went 18 for 28 for 215 yards with no turnovers against the Cowboys, joining Joe Flacco (2008) and Mark Sanchez (2009) as the only rookie QBs to win two playoff starts. The 49ers (15-4) used back-to-back long scoring drives in the second half to wear down the Cowboys (13-6) and win their 12th straight game. He later made two field goals.

Dallas though could not find a way to break the San Francisco defence, instead giving up another field goal and failing to come up with a late stop in a 19-12 defeat. But once again, the Cowboys would have to live with a Maher field goal, closing the gap to 16-12 with 10 minutes left in the quarter. An electric 44-yard return from KaVontae Turpin gave the Cowboys solid field position for Prescott to work with and a 17-yard completion put Dallas in scoring range. It was still a missed opportunity for the Cowboys as a spectacular 30-yard grab from 49ers tight end George Kittle sparked a scoring drive in response from San Francisco that ended with McCaffrey punching it in. The end result for San Francisco was a Robbie Gould field goal, giving the 49ers a 3-0 lead over the Cowboys after the opening quarter. Speaking of which, the 49ers had the first real scoring chance of the game after Prescott was intercepted while attempted a pass for Michael Gallup in a straight shotgun dropback.
Plays that might get forgotten include Tony Pollard's game-changing injury and a dropped interception by Trevon Diggs.
But on second-and-10 with 19 seconds to play, the 49ers got a 21-yard pass to Jennings to the Cowboys' 32 with only 12 seconds left. Purdy to Kittle begins 8-minute drive – Take your pick on the key play of this drive, but we'll go with the first one. The Cowboys were still in position to score, but without their change-of-pace back on the field, the playbook changed and the Cowboys threw an interception at the end of the half that cost them points. After that, the Cowboys had seemingly got off the field on a third-down sack, but Donovan Wilson was flagged for holding. Pollard's injury changed the game – The Cowboys were moving the ball at the end of the half and had the 49ers on their heels before Tony Pollard suffered the ankle injury that ended his game. Jennings catch sets up more points for 49ers – The Cowboys had just thrown an interception but had a chance to end the half with a 6-6 tie.
Behind a stifling defense, the 49ers eliminate the Cowboys for the second season in a row to move into the NFC championship game at the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Just for TV, get the ratings up. It was a 30-yard reception by tight end George Kittle, who stretched with his right hand to tip the ball back to himself. On the opening play of the fourth quarter, Christian McCaffrey scored on a two-yard touchdown run that put the 49ers up, 16-9, all the lead they would need. “Our takeaways for the season speak for themselves. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who was coming off a stellar performance in a wild-card win at Tampa Bay, was reacquainted with the interception issues that dogged him during the regular season. I can promise that the number will never be this again.” “He gave me a catchable ball, and I was just trying to be dramatic,” the tight end said with a smile. “That’s pretty sweet in the playoffs.” “He made a number of plays today,” Shanahan said. But Dallas didn’t force the rookie quarterback into a turnover. “We thought we were going to be able to get our hands on the ball just because of the way we play on defense,” Dallas coach Mike McCarthy said. “The number that it’s gotten to is ridiculous.

The Dallas Cowboys' final play in their loss to the 49ers featured O-linemen spread out wide and Ezekiel Elliott lined up at center.
That's when the final play served as a culmination of the Cowboys' poor execution down the stretch. The Cowboys never gave themselves a chance with how those final minutes unfolded. On the first play of their final series, Prescott rolled out on a slow-developing pass play well into his own end zone -- and he nearly was taken down for a game-ending safety. "We had it there for us to go get a step farther to the championship. With 10 seconds left, the 49ers sagged completely back on defense, and Dallas tried to catch them napping. Even though Schultz went out of bounds, he was knocked backward when he crossed the line. The 49ers' left gunner had been blocked to the ground, and the next man downfield was about 5 yards behind where the ball would have hit. On their prior offensive possession, Prescott was sacked on third-and-10, and the Cowboys punted from their own 18-yard line with all three timeouts remaining and more than 2 minutes left in the game. As did the Cowboys' season with a [KaVontae Turpin](https://www.nfl.com/players/kavontae-turpin/) -- more on him in a minute -- who was hit almost immediately. The stage was set for one final play from the Dallas Cowboys, who made myriad errors down the stretch Sunday but still had a shot to make things interesting in their Divisional Round game against the San Francisco 49ers. Dallas trailed by seven at its own 24-yard line, thanks to some rather poor execution in the final minutes.

While the Ravens could still apply the franchise tag on the 2019 NFL MVP now that his rookie contract has expired, there’s a growing sense that Jackson could be on another team soon enough. Grading the San Francisco 49ers position by position following their 19-12 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
In the second half, it seemed like Shanahan finally realized his team is better than the Cowboys and he doesn't have to fool them to beat them. He also gave up a 10-yard to Prescott in the red zone and a touchdown catch to Dalton Schultz on the next play. But he also had a 53-yard return, Robbie Gould made all of his kicks plus the 49ers blocked an extra point. In the first half, it seemed like Shanahan was overthinking things and trying to fool Quinn with exotic runs because Quinn knows his bread and butter so well. So while the 49ers played well enough to beat Dallas, they did not play well enough to beat the Eagles, who'll they face next week in Philadelphia. Arik Armstead almost sacked Prescott in the end zone for a safety near the end of the game, but missed. He recorded a team-high 9 tackles, plus a pass breakup and an interception in the red zone that took points away from the Cowboys -- that's also what you call competitive greatness. Also the Cowboys completely bonked in the second half. He threw for just 214 yards and no touchdowns, and his passer rating was a pedestrian 87.4, but he managed the game well and didn't turn the ball over, as opposed to the Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott, who shriveled under pressure and threw two picks. George Kittle turned the momentum of the game with a 30-yard juggling catch up the seam while the game was tied at nine late in the fourth quarter. In fact, he kept the offense afloat while the run game was non-existent and the offensive line struggled to block the Cowboys defensive front. And on one play, Micah Parsons lifted Mike McGlinchey clear off the ground with one arm and threw him down on his back.
