"This now appears to be a question of when, not If, Rick Tocchet succeeds Bruce Boudreau as the coach of the Canucks," Johnston said. Boudreau signed a one-year extension to continue on as coach last May. The 2022-2023 season has been a rocky one for the team. “All I can say is that Bruce is our coach right now,” Rutherford said while saying a change wasn't guaranteed. “I’d be a fool to say I don’t know what’s going on," Boudreau said. So that's just how I shut it out, just realizing how much you love it and care about the players.

Under Boudreau last season, the Canucks got better, finishing 32-15-10, but were eliminated from playoff contention with two games left in the season. Boudreau was hired as Canucks coach in December 2021 after the club fired head coach Travis Green and GM Jim Benning following a poor start last season. The teams he has coached for a full season have made the playoffs nine of 10 years. The success hasn't transferred into this season, either. "I just don't go on the ice all the time." At times emotional, when asked if he would savour these upcoming games, Boudreau added, “You love it.

Imagine a team of Bruce Boudreau’s, and you brought in Messier to dismantle them one at a time. That’s the kind of pettiness I aspire to in hockey. It’s hard to break down the Avalanche dominating on a 5 on 3 because they were built to do this. Instead of talking about the direction of the team, we’re talking about signs in the stands. I think that earlier tweet claims the Canucks are not great at penalty killing, but honestly, you’re down a man for like what, 10% of the game? Which in checking the standings, appears to be many of them. As does a slight delay while they figure out if a sign supporting the coach is good to go or not. That’s the kind of guy I re-sign for many years and prioritize over, oh I don’t know, a winger who sometimes moonlights as a centre for the Ramrod Devastators. Don’t let him twist in the wind to the point that it’s now a national talking point, and the noise of the situation has gotten so loud that even the players are commenting on it after the game. Instead of talking about the game, we’re talking about the chants. “Well, Rutherford wanted his own guy in place, he probably has a vision and style he wants the team to play,” they would have said. Bruce Boudreau, a man who gave this team an exciting season last year, a man respected around the league, has been made to eat dirt publicly under the direction of the Canucks.

Unfair treatment of Bruce Boudreau a symptom of deep Canucks ... (The Athletic)

Whether Vancouver head coach Bruce Boudreau should be replaced or not is beside the point. He deserves better than this from the Canucks.

He was even comfortable joining the chorus of people in the hockey world criticizing the Canucks organization for how they’ve treated Boudreau. Breaking that promise within 72 hours, the club promptly hired Rutherford, who didn’t even know that the organization had given Boudreau a contract with a mutual option for a second season. You can start at Dave Nonis, go through to Mike Gillis, add Trevor Linden and then go through the likes of Jim Benning, Travis Green, Jeff Stipec and Trent Carroll for good measure. Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford even took the unprecedented step of confirming that he’d been speaking with potential Boudreau replacements dating back “months” earlier this week. The Canucks aren’t very good this year, however, and don’t look particularly organized in any phase of the game either. The litany of people — executives, coaches and players — who have come through this organization and left on bad terms, with their humanity challenged and their reputation diminished, has become extensive. That’s the resume of a man who lives for this game, for being behind the bench. chants in Vancouver as Bruce Boudreau gets emotional behind the bench Which is sort of the rub here. At some point in the next few days, however, Boudreau will most likely be fired and he knows it. He singlehandedly restored a sense of optimism to a beleaguered, chaotic, perpetually middling and consistently disappointing NHL franchise. Surely Boudreau must be upset about how this has transpired.
