GAMEDAY: Jets at Canadiens (NHL.com)

The Winnipeg Jets open a season-long five-game road trip tonight in Montreal against the Canadiens.

Winnipeg joins Toronto, Nashville, and Minnesota as the only teams in the NHL this season with three wins by a 2-1 score. While the Jets are battling for top spot in the Central Division and the Western Conference, the Canadiens are eighth in the Atlantic Division. Winnipeg is 8-7-0 against the Eastern Conference this season, but have won three of the past four games. Winnipeg is 3-4-0 in their past seven road games after starting the season 9-4-1 away from home. It's tied with the Boston Bruins for the most winning streaks of at least three games this season. The Jets have won three games in a row for the sixth time this season. On the flip side, tonight's tilt marks the start of a five-game home stand for the Canadiens. "They were a little worried to be wearing Jets jerseys in a Canadiens crowd. "We're all competitors and we all want to win. The older brother made sure to still put on a show, however. But an ankle injury sidelined the young defenceman prior to that night, and it was announced just a day later that Justin required surgery. "I feel like we've had a few chances to play each other and one of us has been hurt, or sent down, or something like that," said Morgan after the Jets morning skate.

Montreal increased their lead to three goals at 4:19 of the third. Jonathan Drouin, who was a game-time decision with an upper-body injury, also missed the game. The Jets got on the board first after a scoreless opening frame. Montreal responded with three unanswered goals to complete the second period. “It feels good, we just beat two of the best teams in the league,” said Montembeault. “There are very few games that we're going to walk out of a rink and say we didn't deserve to win, but that certainly was that tonight. "When you have that mentality, you can deal with the turnaround and we’re working really hard on that. “We’re trying a culture where even if you lose guys, guys that play important roles, anyone that steps in plays the way we play.

Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens shock the Winnipeg Jets with ... (Globalnews.ca)

The Canadiens have five straight home games and nine of their next 10 at the Bell Centre. Brian Wilde has more on the Habs' Tuesday night contest against ...

That would be a horrific scenario if they were fighting for a playoff spot, but considering their spot in the standings, there is no worry at all. It all sounds dangerous in a way, but again, it is actually for the Canadiens, considering their long-term goals, not that dangerous at all. They feared that would be the end of a draft choice for him in a deadline day trade, if he could not play leading up to March 3, 2023. That meant money had to be found to bring Rem Pitlick and Rafael-Harvey Pinard onto the active NHL roster. In the second period, Dach, with a zone entry, appeared to be in a bit of trouble. Suzuki and Caufield have big skills around the other goalie, but without a strong defensive solution at the other wing, there’s an issue defensively. Dach can be a part of something special when the four players he plays with are close to his skill set. The elements he adds to the shifts that he plays cannot be ignored. However, overall, as a line, the difficulty continues as the three were all around a poor 25-per cent shot share. That meant Jesse Ylonen was bumped up to the first line. He started the zone exit with a brilliant pass to Mike Matheson who took it up ice as the classic puck-moving defenceman. As management contemplates the future, they, no doubt, thought they were weak at centre, but they really are not going to be.

Montreal Canadiens Reportedly Begin Extension Talks With Cole ... (prohockeyrumors.com)

After falling to 15th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, the 22-year-old Cole Caufield now finds himself the focal point of the Montreal Canadiens' rebuild.

It wouldn’t surprise many to see a long-term extension for Caufield start with a greater cap hit than $7MM. In the event that contract talks between the two parties turn less than agreeable, Caufield is not eligible for arbitration. [Matt Boldy](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/boldyma01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-17_hr) just signed a seven-year, $49MM contract with the Minnesota Wild that could be comparable for Caufield and Montreal. They haven’t been tasked with signing any big contracts yet, however, and this is a high-stakes first test. His 26 goals lead the team by a mile, and his 36 points are just one behind linemate Dreger noted that the conversation started around a month ago.

“I think back when he was playing with (Huberdeau) and (Barkov) on that line, I think he was super underrated — what he brought to the table for that line, how successful they were because of him. The way Dadonov played over the first half of the season made that possibility seem remote, and the interest the Canadiens have received for him has been tepid, to be generous.
