Their defensive game was largely good, but the mistakes they made – particularly on instances where they left Dallas’ big guns like Benn, Seguin and Pavelski alone in the slot area – came back to haunt them. In the third period, with the Stars pressing, it didn’t happen quite as often – and if you look back at things, essentially all of the goals Dallas scored were off turnovers or defensive lapses by the Flames. He made a smart play, feigning with his body positioning that he would pass the puck to the slot. Unfortunately, nobody was on the boards to receive his pass, so Dallas grabbed the puck. That cut the Flames’ lead to 6-2. Eventually, Rasmus Andersson leaned into a slap shot from the point that beat Wedgewood to make it 5-1 Flames. The puck was going towards Jamie Benn in front and Rasmus Andersson tried to get his stick in the way. The Flames came out with a strong first shift that resulted in a goal 25 seconds into the game. With Stars forward Ty Dellandrea in the box for holding, the Flames cycled through their two units and then placed their bump-up line on for the waning moments on the advantage. Benn’s stick hit Andersson’s and put the puck in the net. They ended up escaping Dallas with a white-knuckle 6-5 victory after the Stars’ big guns nearly powered the home side to a dramatic comeback. (Twice.) On Saturday in Dallas, the Calgary Flames at one point had a 6-1 lead.

Flames survive third period scare, defeat Stars in high scoring affair (Calgary Sun)

The Calgary Flames almost give up a huge lead, but hold on to defeat the Dallas Stars 6-5 in matinee action.

“You see them coming, they have the crowd behind them, you know what it is,” Huberdeau said. Dan Vladar, who saved 29-of-34 shots that were fired his way, turned away the final few Stars opportunities and the Flames escaped Dallas with the victory. When Colin Miller made it 6-5, the Dallas crowd rightfully lost its mind. “Seemingly” is the key word there, though. Trevor Lewis scored his first power-play goal of the year eight minutes later before Jamie Benn got one back for the Stars. “Obviously, a good win,” said Flames defenceman Chris Tanev, who scored his first goal of the season against the Stars. They’re arguably the best team in the Western Conference this season and pushed last season’s high-flying Flames team right to the brink in their Round 1 playoff matchup, too. Scoring six on the Stars is no small-thing, either. And look, the win is what counts. We have a lot of mature guys, older guys, and we can take that as an advantage and close these games out.” Instead, the Flames had to hang on for dear life in the dying moments after the Stars mounted a furious third-period comeback.
