If the Edmonton Oilers want any hope of having a home-ice advantage in the playoffs they need to start stringing together some wins. The Edmonton Oilers are back at it tonight as they face the Vegas Golden Knights. After steamrolling over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers were once again able to find their scoring touch against a weaker team in a 7-1 win over the Vegas is top of the Pacific, but they are struggling as of late and the recent news of the Mark Stone injury isn’t going to help them out. It’s nice to see the top guys get some points when the Oilers win these big wins. If Skinner can’t make it to Vegas in time for the game tonight I would start Jack Campbell again tonight again.

[GAME RECAP] Oilers 7, Sharks 1 (The Copper & Blue)

Oilers do their best to turn Ken Holland off of an Erik Karlsson trade as they convert the extra point in San Jose.

It’s not good enough, whether they scored 13 goals in their last 2 games or not. Hopefully that serves them well as they begin the stretch drive toward the playoffs. 7-0 final with a healthy lead in all the major categories of interest. Fortunately for the hosts, the period was only 20 minutes long, and they were eventually given about 17 minutes of reprieve via the second intermission. The last few minutes came and went without much to report, but obviously by then the game was well in hand, and with Edmonton playing again on Saturday night, the primary objective was avoiding anything stupid before the final buzzer. Still, San Jose couldn’t make a dent on their own PP, and Edmonton made them pay for it — again — almost immediately after it expired: Edmonton stabilized, drew another penalty — this time a Cicek trip on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — and extended their lead: LFG. Edmonton had to kill a penalty almost immediately through a Dylan Holloway infraction, but they were able to do so without issue and eventually eased into a bit of a rhythm at 5v5. Last time out, Edmonton shit pumped the lowly [Anaheim Ducks](https://www.anaheimcalling.com) to the tune of a 6-2 drubbing, and they were looking to do the same to another lowly outfit just down (or up?) the freeway. Watkins also said that he hopes "a coach or somebody" reaches out to Jackson and that the signal-caller "decides to play." He was suspended and fined for the incident and hasn’t played a single minute in the NBA since then (though shoulder and ankle surgeries have played a part as well). The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt and others have mentioned Kingsbury as a possible LaFleur replacement, and Young was in favor of having the 43-year-old work with Wilson. The duo had a rather peculiar style, but to most, it felt like the duo was implying that they would smoke Marijuana. Jackson added that he "can't give a 100% of myself to my guys and fans" but said he's "still hopeful we still have a chance" against the Bengals. He missed the first 35 games of the season due to a hip injury but recently returned to the lineup. That was good enough for the team to bring him back on a one-year $1.25M contract in the summer, but Helm’s hip troubles have limited him to just five appearances so far. He has a ridiculous 82 points in 44 games and leads the NHL in points as well as goals (37), assists (45) and power-play points (41). The Vegas penalty kill came up with a huge stop in the third period of Thursday’s game and will need to be stellar once again this evening. When these teams met earlier this season, the Golden Knights came away with a point but gave up a McDavid goal in overtime for the team’s third loss in four games at the time. It’s unclear what Cassidy will do with the lines with Stone out of commission. Vegas can’t afford to start leaving points on the table. Leon Draisaitl is second in points (66) and power-play points (34) as the two continue to tear up the league. Vegas scored three goals in the third period in a hard-fought win in response to a very disappointing and flat performance against Los Angeles. Also, William Carrier — who scored the game-winner in the final three minutes of regulation — leads the team with five game-winning goals. Not having Stone in the mix is a major blow, especially to a team already dealing with multiple injuries. The penalty kill, however, leaves a lot to be desired; it currently ranks 24th (73.9 percent). Plus, he is producing at more than a point-per-game pace with 33 points in 30 games this season. On Thursday, it was the fourth line, Jack Eichel and Adin Hill.

The Knights are 13th in goals allowed and 16th on the penalty kill. Substantially, they are the best team in the NHL on the powerplay. Chandler Stephenson has 11 goals and 29 assists, with five goals on the powerplay. Additionally, they must avoid penalties and stop McDavid and Draisaitl from dominating the game. Eichel has 15 goals and 18 assists, with one conversion on the powerplay. Moreover, they must avoid penalties and prevent the Knights from forming breakaway chances. The Oilers are 23-18-3 this season and chasing the Seattle Kraken and the Los Angeles Kings in the division. The Oilers have two of the best players in the world. PRE-GAME REPORT: Oilers at Golden Knights (NHL.com)

The Oilers conclude a four-game road trip and play the second half of a back-to-back Saturday at T-Mobile Arena against the Pacific Division leaders.

Mark Stone is second on the Golden Knights with 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) in 42 games and was on pace for 32 goals this season, which would've been one shy of his career high of 33 set in 77 games in 2018-19... The Golden Knights 20 wins when scoring first this season are tied for the 2nd-most in the NHL (BOS - 21)... Despite claiming the two points on Thursday, the Golden Knights lost the services of forward Mark Stone, who left the game with an upper-body injury and is 'week-to-week' for a Vegas team that's beginning to rack up the injuries. The Vegas backup is 10-3-1 through 16 games this season (15 starts) and needs one win to set a career high. We'll put him as week-to-week for now and see where we're at once he gets back on the ice." "We're going to take on a team that's at the top of our division," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said last night in San Jose. "That's a good team over there," forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said of the Golden Knights. "He's making the most of the opportunity that he had this week." Campbell has consecutive wins under his belt and could get the nod in back-to-back nights for the Oilers at T-Mobile Arena. He said he's ready and willing to tend the twine again on Saturday if that's what the coaching staff decides. LAS VEGAS, NV - It's been a good road trip for the Oilers. Broberg's Impact Making Oilers' Trade Deadline Decisions Easier (The Hockey Writers)

The general consensus is that the Edmonton Oilers should acquire a defenceman at the deadline, but Broberg's play is changing that narrative.

There is a fair chance that he would have just as much of an impact on the team for the rest of the season as someone they may acquire; unless it’s a player like It’s tough to do so if they are going out and getting someone to take his place in the lineup. Broberg has assumed control of the sixth spot on the blue line and could realistically take over on the second pair by the end of the season. Broberg appears past the stage where more time in the AHL will help him anymore and it can now stunt his development. It’s true that they need to make the playoffs this season and should make an impact once they’re there, but acquiring a big-time defender could do more bad than good overall. The first six games were lackluster, but the team was willing to give him a fair chance as he has a lot of potential and they hope he can be a top-four defenceman in the near future. The only one that has been more effective overall is Darnell Nurse and Bouchard in the sub-100 minutes they’ve spent together. He made comparisons of their skating, smarts, and how both are calm with the puck during the intermission of the Oilers’ game against the San Jose Sharks. Broberg is a plus-5 and has had three assists and seven shots during the past six outings. Broberg has played 18 games this season for the Oilers and it has been clear that he is developing at a rapid pace and earning more playing time. [Philip Broberg](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/philip-broberg/) to take a big step this season with his development and play regular minutes on their third pairing. The last six games have been where the real shift has come in his game.

There were some moments we'd like to have back in it on the defensive side, but for the most part, I thought we controlled most of that game." "Now it's about going back home, getting a little bit of rest here, getting a good practice in and start attacking the record at home. We want to bring our simple, straightforward, direct road game back to home ice for the best fans in the world." "This part of the year for us is kind of where either we go down, or we start climbing. "You know what, and I thought you (media) said that the first game didn't go our way. We talked a lot about continuing what we were doing to build the lead, making sure that their defense had to go back and fetch pucks and work through five of us in order to get back to our end. Obviously a little frustrated with not hitting the spots that I'd like to hit, but that's just the way it goes. "I think we're finding our game a little bit, finding our identity as a team, and I think guys individually are starting to slot into where they're most successful, and that obviously goes a long way. Just 19 seconds after Paul Cotter scored for Vegas to cut Edmonton's lead to 3-2, Kostin received a lengthy pass from Janmark just before the Golden Knights blueline and burst into the zone on a two-on-one with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The lone defender Kaedan Korczak opted to defend a pass to Nugent-Hopkins, allowing Kostin to bear down on Thompson and beat the netminder far side with a hard wrist shot off the post and in. Just 57 seconds later, Leon Draisaitl batted a rebound from a Connor McDavid's shot out of mid-air and past Thompson to extend the Oilers lead to 2-0. The Edmonton Oilers finally did it. They held on to two-goal lead. They held on to a third period lead, giving up little in their own end.

He found Hyman with a clever slot pass early in the third for a Grade A shot. But after a lengthy mad scramble in front of the Edmonton net, he was down and out and deflected into his own net the first Vegas goal. He allowed the pass out from the corner on the third Vegas goal. He cut off a dangerous slot pass to Eichel early in the third. He was caught in the Red Light Zone on the third Vegas goal, not covering a passing lane, not covering the shooter Karlsson. He’s looking more confident with the puck and did well on a line with Ryan and Holloway late in the third. But in his up-and-down game he kicked off the Sequence of Pain on the second Vegas goal, allowing his man to take the puck out from behind the net, leading to one post shot and then the goal against. He courageously blocked a point shot late in the second, but took it on the back of the leg. He set up RNH’s 5-alarm shot in the second with a swell pass, the hammered in his own goal on a 2-on-1, making the almost exact same shot as Draisaitl nailed a few minutes earlier. He continues to work well driving a line with Janmark and Kostin and got off a 5-alarm shot in the second. He got his feet moving on his first shift, burst up the middle of the ice, took Barrie’s vertical stretch and beat the Vegas goalie with a zinger near the post and in. Not all good, as a puck deflected off him on net and he lost a board battle leading to another Grade A shot late in the third.

Thompson finished the game with 33 saves on 37 shots for an .892 save percentage, but he is the reason this game was not a blowout from the start. However, they repeatedly got in their own way, giving a skilled Oilers offense way too many gift-wrapped chances. It was another odd-man rush, this time off an ill-advised pinch, that ended up in the back of Vegas’ net. Kessel retrieved the rebound from behind the net and found Froese, who hit the cross bar. He and Darnell Nurse broke out on a 2-on-1 after sloppy puck management by Vegas in the offensive zone. It started with a huge hit by Keegan Kolesar on Draisaitl in the neutral zone and ended with Kolesar banking the puck off Oilers netminder Jack Campbell for his fifth of the year. He also made multiple saves on an Edmonton power play in the first period, single-handedly preventing the Oilers from running away with the game early. Though the Golden Knights stayed in the game and battled back multiple times, they trailed for 59:15 and never led.
