Call Of The Wilde: New York Islanders shade the Montreal Canadiens (Globalnews.ca)

The Montreal Canadiens have a quick weekend road trip in New York. First the Islanders, then the Rangers on Sunday night. Stop one was a valiant effort, ...

The truth is, while many want to give the excuse that the team is full of rookies, it is the veterans that have been the letdown more often. If you are looking for a silver lining on a night of another loss, it’s that the future of the club isn’t struggling as much as the past, especially on the blue line. That doesn’t sound extraordinary, but it actually is as only two players in the league have a higher percentage of their team’s goals. Hughes can get draft picks for the future in trades, and his young guns can keep learning. Montembeault might be a better option for the future than he is given credit. When a shot hits a goalie in the mask, it’s because he couldn’t make the save properly. Other than that, Jesse Ylonen looked comfortable when he had to move to the top line. It wasn’t just a good night on the power play for Drouin. He was interviewed on Thursday about having a certain goal taken away from him because Josh Anderson tipped it over the line. It took a little while to get comfortable as the last man back, but he’s arriving well. Drouin was the best Canadiens player on the night. It’s been a rough go for Jonathan Drouin, still looking for his first goal of the season.

"We always focus on getting pucks to the net," Lambert added. "It definitely feels good to get on the scoresheet. "It was nice to see him get rewarded for it. "I felt like everyone was on top of the puck and dialed in," Beauvillier said. "We were under pressure. "Our guys fought," Canadiens coach Martin St.

"It shows a commitment." But "it's a killer when you get down," said defenceman Jordan Harris, who blocked four of them.

Bossy’s wife, Lucy, his daughters Tanya and Josiane, and Tanya’s two daughters attended the game and used the opportunity to promote the Mike Bossy Memorial Fund through Lung Cancer Canada. A Laval native, Bossy set an NHL record with nine consecutive 50-goal seasons and helped the Islanders win four consecutive Stanley Cups in the early 1980s. He has helped spark linemates Joel Armia and Evgenii Dadonov, and has been a key piece of the penalty-killing unit. Sam Montembeault made 36 saves to give the Canadiens an opportunity to come back, but the offence was hampered by the fact Montreal finished the game with only 10 forwards. “They bring pucks to the net and it’s hard for anyone. “When you’re down two (goals) in the first 10 minutes, it’s not the best start,” said defenceman Jordan Harris.

New York Islanders vs. Montreal Canadiens: No excuses [Game #44] (Lighthouse Hockey)

New York Islanders 2, Montreal Canadiens 1: Much better effort ... (Lighthouse Hockey)

Montembeault played well, but two early goals were enough to carry the Islanders to a win when everyone around them lost.

The homestand is more than half over, and the Islanders are 1-1-1. Louis waited until the final minute to get his top skaters on the ice and pull Montembeault despite having the puck in the Isles’ zone, though that may have to do with having only ten forwards for two periods. Lamber sent the Barzal line over the boards, and they generated the first offensive zone pressure in a while for the Islanders. Romanov was guilty of another weak clear, this one into the neutral zone but to no one in particular, and Mayfield whiffed on Suzuki’s re-entry move. Pageau opted to pass to Clutterbuck, and Clutterbuck lifted the puck over the net. Had he connected, it would have taken a hell of a Sorokin save to keep the puck out. They didn’t relent and kept the puck in the offensive zone for most of that stretch, forcing Montembeault to be sharp. They got the puck deep and forechecked, requiring Montembeault to clear it up the wall. However, Sorokin is a tough opponent at the other end of the ice, and the Islanders are lucky to have him. Mayfield fired the puck toward Montembeault, and he made the initial save off his shoulder but conceded a friendly rebound to Québecois Anthony Beauvillier. The new Barzal line had a strong first shift as well, and the traditional fourth line followed up with a goal. The Islanders badly needed a regulation win and two points, and not to waste another brilliant Ilya Sorokin masterpiece.
