Thompson still has a full slate of options and can be kept in the minors until he’s needed. He’s played all three outfield positions, including plenty of center field, and has stolen at least 20 bases in each of the past four minor league seasons. Since then, he’s climbed his way up the minor league ladder, hitting well at each stop until he got to Triple-A. He then signed a minor league deal with the Marlins just in time for his breakout campaign. Jays Trade Chavez Young for Zach Thompson (Bluebird Banter)

The Jays have traded CF prospect Chavez Young for RHP Zach Thompson from the Pirates. Young was #21 on our prospect list last year.

He can hit 93-95 on the fastball, but has a nice curve....and I’m thinking all MLB players should have a unique name. He’s 25 now and was very unlikely to get any substantial playing time with the Jays. He plays great defense and can steal bases. It seems like a good deal for the Jays. Thompson pitched in 29 games, 22 starts for the Pirates and had a 5.18 ERA in 121.2 innings. The Jays have traded CF prospect Chavez Young for RHP Zach Thompson from the Pirates.

The Blue Jays have acquired right-handed pitcher Zach Thompson ... (Blue Jays Nation)

We've been talking about the Blue Jays linking up with former front officer staffer Ben Cherington on a deal for ages. Well, here it is!

Young is a glove-first prospect with good wheels who hasn’t shown that he can hit well enough to hack it at the Major League level. His peripherals weren’t much better, as he sported a 4.87 FIP with 6.7 strikeouts per nine and 3.4 walks per nine. In the following off-season, the Marlins sent Thompson along with two other players to the Pirates in exchange for catcher Jacob Stallings. After a few years in Chicago’s system, Thompson signed with the Miami Marlins as a free agent. He didn’t sign, went to college, and was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round of the draft three years later. In a corresponding move, Junior Fernandez, who the team recently claimed off of waivers, has been designated for assignment.
