Zach Thompson

The Blue Jays acquired pitcher Zach Thompson from the Pirates in exchange for outfielder Chavez Young.

The 6-foot-7 hurler assumes a 40-man roster spot and will serve as a depth starting option for Toronto. Thompson, 29, pitched in 29 games for Pittsburgh last season (22 starts), working a 5.18 ERA (80 ERA+) in 121.2 innings. Thompson went 3-10 with a 5.18 ERA in 121⅔ innings, walking 46, striking out 90 and allowing 19 home runs. It was the fourth time in six seasons Young has swiped 20 or more bags, highlighted by a career-high 44 in 2018. He played 70 games with Triple-A Buffalo in 2022, hitting .237 with six doubles, two triples, six home runs, 22 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.
