“The Fabelmans” ends with a chance meeting between Sam and a legendary director that is too deliriously funny to even consider spoiling. With “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg has the opportunity to print the legend, to soften and beautify painful experiences through the power of cinema. Mitzi is able to pick up on the fact that her son is attempting to overcome the fear, and lends him a movie camera to film the crash. One of the tools that “The Fabelmans” has to help widen its scope beyond Steven Spielberg are the rich and holistic performances from Williams and Dano. In the mirror, Sam sees himself with his 8mm camera circling his family, finding the best angles to capture the drama. It’s an emotionally powerful movie, a fact that led to it winning the Best Picture-Drama and Best Director awards at the 80th Golden Globes and garnered a further three nomination.

As Sammy, young actor Gabriel LaBelle is an uncanny match for Spielberg, full of gentle charisma and ambitions so earnest they’re almost painful to witness. We see Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and Burt (Paul Dano) through his eyes, sometimes literally, as they share with him their divergent perspectives: Burt is warm but pragmatic, while Mitzi—a dreamer—is luminous but elusive. In fact, it’s purposefully sparing as the camera zooms in on Spielberg stand-in Sammy Fabelman’s coming-of-age journey, an enchanted childhood complicated by his mother and father’s marital strife.

Steven Spielberg, Damien Chazelle and Sam Mendes helm a trio of big new releases that hark back to a golden age of cinema.
“That little beam of light is escape,” says one of the film’s protagonists, Stephen (Micheal Ward), his feelings echoed by the projectionist (Toby Jones), who swoons while explaining the ins and outs of turning still images into moving ones: “It creates an illusion of movement. The film stretches over three long hours as it dwells on matters of pleasure and legacy, denuding the idea of cinema until it lays fully exposed, a voyeuristic approach that has critics and audiences split. The Fabelmans is the latest addition to the love-letter-to-cinema trope, a subgenre dedicated to often romantic, rose-tinted odes to filmmaking and the rituals of cinemagoing. Chazelle, now on his fifth film, has devoted half of his filmography to the mythology of Hollywood. Although no stranger to exploring his familial dynamics onscreen (his parents’ divorce is almost a trope of its own), Spielberg comes to The Fabelmans with the lulling nostalgia of maturity, a filmmaker who understands that more lies behind than ahead. “Movies are dreams, doll, that you never forget,” says a wide-eyed Michelle Williams as Mitzi Fabelman in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, an autobiographical drama that sees the Oscar-nominated actress play the screen version of the director’s mother.

It's great to see a film that feels so personal for its director and one that has so much authenticity in its props, locations, and set decorations. And because of that pluckiness, this film is not amazing....but it's good. Nobody tries too hard in this film, and none of the performances could be called over-acting. This leading role is played with spirited innocence by Gabriel LaBelle (most recently seen in the "American Gigolo" series on Showtime). This film has a richness of intimate cinematography showing clear beams of light cutting through the darkness at almost every angle. But in addition to the charming coming-of-age layer of "The Fabelmans", the young boy's experimentation with amateur filmmaking offers unexpected insights as well.
