Ke Huy Quan Wins Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes 2023 (Vanity Fair)

For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer,” the 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' star said in his emotional acceptance speech.

I don’t know how to explain it, but it was a feeling that I haven’t had for decades. “I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said. It was the release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians—with his future costar Yeoh—that gave Quan renewed hope for opportunities in Hollywood, and he returned to acting when directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert cast him in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan plays Waymond Wang, the sweet husband of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) who is saddened to be pursuing a divorce after he feels his marriage has run cold. As a child in the ’80s, Quan starred in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but later was unable to find work as an Asian actor in Hollywood, instead building up a career behind the scenes as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Quan’s emotional acceptance speech reflected on the tough journey he’s had from a child star.

Three Asian men have previously contended for Best Film Supporting Actor, with Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” 2004) being the only one to originate from the continent (specifically Japan). Two of the category’s winners – Julie Christie (“Away from Her,” 2008) and Natalie Portman (“Black Swan,” 2011) – were born in Asia but are both of European descent. They and their cast mates also appear to be the ones to beat in this year’s ensemble race, while the film could also reasonably net dual supporting female bids for Stephanie Hsu (who is also of Chinese descent) and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Now, Quan is back, likely to be nominated for (and possibly win) an Oscar, and Cohen continues to thrive in the business. “So when the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal, he said he would never imagine that he would have to talk to Chunk to get Data to be in his movie. It’s an adorable moment and really puts into perspective just how incredible it is how well so many people from The Goonies have done. He too left acting decades ago, in his case to become an entertainment lawyer, and it was Cohen who helped Quan close his deal to appear in the film. I said, “Yes, Indie.” And he said, “Come here.” He pulled me close to him and gave me the biggest hug. He stared at me, and I thought, He thinks I’m a fan, and he’s gonna tell me to stay away. I was scheduled to go audition for them that afternoon, so I had to go to sleep. I read the script and I thought the role of Waymond was written for me. I was scheduled to attend the Disney D23 event, and I was told Harrison Ford was gonna be there. Yes, I knew from the very beginning, which made me even more nervous, because I’ve been a fan of Michelle Yeoh for many years, and I always wanted to work with her. So many people come up to me and say how much they love the movie, and I’m very proud to say that our movie is A24’s most successful movie. I looked out the window and the sun was rising, and I was just imagining all these things I wanted to put into this character. I screamed and I jumped so high. And I got the part! I had no choice but to do something else, so I went to film school, graduated, and started working behind the camera. Two weeks after I decided to go back to acting, I read the script for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
