And while not everyone has forgiven and forgotten—Fraser, who is a favorite for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale, will not be in attendance—it seems like much of Hollywood is ready for the show to go on. Salma Hayek, Michelle Williams and Jessica Chastain (in Oscar de la Renta) all opted for sheer shimmering numbers, and Angela Bassett brought the silver lining to the limelight in Pamella Roland. Matt Bomer, Niecy Nash-Betts and Selena Gomez wore one of the night’s most popular hues—a regal purple—on their sleeves. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer,” the 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' star said in his emotional acceptance speech.
I don’t know how to explain it, but it was a feeling that I haven’t had for decades. “I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said. It was the release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians—with his future costar Yeoh—that gave Quan renewed hope for opportunities in Hollywood, and he returned to acting when directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert cast him in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan plays Waymond Wang, the sweet husband of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) who is saddened to be pursuing a divorce after he feels his marriage has run cold. As a child in the ’80s, Quan starred in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but later was unable to find work as an Asian actor in Hollywood, instead building up a career behind the scenes as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Quan’s emotional acceptance speech reflected on the tough journey he’s had from a child star.

Butler thanked Elvis himself, while the “Banshees of Inisherin” star made sure to thank Jenny the donkey.
Butler, who will next be seen in Dune 2, ended his speech by thanking his family, including his sister who was at the show. He made sure to also thank the Presley family for “opening [their] hearts” to him. His last thank-you went out to Jenny the donkey, the breakout star of the dark comedy. Farrell’s fellow nominees included Babylon’s Diego Calva, Glass Onion’s Daniel Craig, White Noise’s Adam Driver, and The Menu’s Ralph Fiennes, but Farrell has been out front much of the season due to the critical acclaim of his work in Banshees. In Banshees, the actor stars as Pádraic Súilleabháin, an Irish man whose sweet existence is upended when his longtime best friend stops speaking to him. The charming star made sure to thank his director, Martin McDonagh, whom he first worked with on 2008’s In Bruges.
The 80th annual ceremony saw a diverse slate of winners as host Jerrod Carmichael took shots at its troubled history.
“This is also for all the shoulders that I stand on, all who came before me, who look like me, and all who are going on this journey with me forward,” said Michelle Yeoh, winning best actress in a musical or comedy for her first leading role on a call sheet in a decades-long career. Jennifer Coolidge barreled through it twice, as a presenter and as an emotional winner for her supporting role in the second season of The White Lotus. Ryan Murphy, accepting the Carol Burnett lifetime achievement award, used much of his speech time to celebrate the achievements of queer actors such as Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Jeremy Pope and Matt Bomer as a “point of hope and progress” for LGBTQ+ viewers watching at home. Carmichael joked – or didn’t, as his delivery throughout the night skewed understated, direct and unfazed – that he was “un-fireable” as the first Black host in the show’s 80-year history. Carmichael didn’t ease up, drawing some awkward gasps later in the evening with a dig at Tom Cruise while introducing his Top Gun: Maverick costars Glenn Powell and Jay Ellis: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned … But Carmichael, a standup comic from North Carolina, [stated the Globes’ situation plainly](https://twitter.com/THR/status/1612985568681668609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1612985568681668609%7Ctwgr%5E89d3c4519bf71bcd14f8f02441e98ea4286868b6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Ffilm%2Flive%2F2023%2Fjan%2F10%2Fgolden-globes-2023-winners-losers-nominees-latest-live): “I’m only being asked to host this, I know, because I’m Black.”

Brad Pitt, nominated for his supporting role in the film “Babylon,” was seated right up front, prompting several shout-outs throughout the night. “During a very tough time in this country, I’m happy that ‘Abbott Elementary’ is able to make so many people laugh,” she added. Carmichael seemed to lose the audience in the room; though he often urged the crowd to pipe down, he was often talked over. As the evening wore on, Carmichael’s humor became more caustic, making a joke about Shelly Miscavige in a bit about Tom Cruise returning his Golden Globes to the HFPA, and later reminding viewers that the Beverly Hilton, where the ceremony takes place, is where Whitney Houston died. And yet, Hollywood loves a comeback story, so the Golden Globes returned this year, determined to advertise the HFPA as a changed and enlightened organization that can still put on a glitzy, booze-soaked show.

Slap-fatigue was a theme of the evening, but there was special dispensation for Murphy to take a pop at the leading player of last year’s Oscar ceremony. Yeoh, Farrell and many others demanded she cool her fingers; the most compelling case was made by Austin Butler, whose moving tribute to his late mother was accompanied by an increase in volume from Flower. Introducing the Top Gun: Maverick star, Carmichael drew awkward gasps and a few whoops with his mention of the main difficulty with Hollywood’s fulsome embrace of its most powerful star.

After years of controversy, the Golden Globes are back on NBC. Keep track of all the big winners right here.
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture While several clear favorites have emerged this awards season—Everything Everywhere All At Once, Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, and Tar among them from the film sphere, and the likes of The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Better Call Saul from the TV set—the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a famously unpredictable bunch.
A night to remember! The 80th annual Golden Globes delivered Hollywood glamour — and A-list appearances — after the 2022 ceremony was not televised.
At the top of the ceremony, Coolidge waved to friends and showed off her curves before heading backstage. Throughout the night, the cast was spotted chatting up A-listers from Pitt to Winkler. native may have ended the night empty-handed, but he proved it truly was just an honor to be nominated. At one point, she was spotted resting her head on her beau's shoulder in the audience. The comedian, 35, took aim at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association after the organization was accused of misconduct and lack of diversity. (In 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported that there were no Black members in the HFPA’s entire voting body.)
For the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, the HFPA left self-importance to the less embattled awards shows and leaned into farce.
Flower was clearly instructed to play off some speakers — it was weird for the Hollywood Foreign Press to interrupt the makers of the best-international-film winner, Argentina, 1985 — but on several occasions, the producers of the broadcast just let people fly as long as they wanted. It was just people coming out to present awards and people receiving those awards and giving speeches. [brings us to Tuesday night](https://www.vulture.com/article/golden-globes-2023-highs-lows-whoas.html), a weird night for an awards show and the NBC return of the ceremony. It was as if this telecast, hosted by a truth-telling Jerrod Carmichael and, unofficially [for a couple of stretches](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/jennifer-coolidge-full-golden-globes-acceptance-speech.html), Jennifer Coolidge, took an edible at the beginning of the evening and got a teensy bit higher as the minutes passed. In keeping with how the Globes has typically operated, there were no video tributes to the year in film and television or musical performances. The producers of the 2023 Globes gave attendees the tools they needed to make themselves and the show feel loose — free alcohol, allegedly scant amounts of food, and an international platform — then basically let an awards show be an awards show. But for many years, the industry acted as if it was important: The Globes marked the start of awards season, provided a hint at what might happen at the Academy Awards, and shined a spotlight on films and TV shows that mainstream audiences might have missed. And that, my friends, is the Golden Globes in a nutshell. And White openly wept at everything she said while producers shoved a camera into his face so the world could watch him sob in 4K HD. Several incidents could be cited as the ultimate encapsulation of the evening’s anything-goes vibe: Carmichael [asking if he could trade](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/golden-globes-2023-tom-cruise-shelly-miscavige-scientology.html) the three Golden Globes Tom Cruise returned to the HFPA for disappeared Scientologist wife [Shelly Miscavige](https://www.vulture.com/2016/05/ron-miscavige-scientology-book-ruthless.html), Quentin Tarantino pronouncing the Best Picture nominees as though he were really angry with cinema and it knew why, Michelle Yeoh joking that she would beat up pianist Chloe Flower if she played over her speech … Coolidge shouted out The White Lotus’s creator, Mike White, for casting her in the series, which has, in turn, convinced her neighbors to talk to her. Talent pulled out of attending the 2022 ceremony, NBC opted not to broadcast the show, and while Golden Globes were still technically awarded, no one really paid attention.

For some Canadian viewers, at least, there was a whole lot of uncensored swearing — including crystal clear f-bombs from host Jerrod Carmichael, The Banshees of Inisherin star Colin Farrell and comedian Nicole Byer. A handful of surprises punctuated the awards show. I probably was at a time where I thought, hey come on girl, you had a really great run," she said, before calling Everything Everywhere All At Once "the best gift." "I had such big dreams as a young person, but what happens is they get sort of fizzled by life," she said. The organization vowed to clean up its act and diversify its voting membership in light of the allegations, appeasing NBC, which televised the 2023 ceremony. He invited her to stand for an ovation from the crowd.
