Supportive leadership: How to avoid destructive criticism to ... (Atlanta Small Business Network)

Unlike constructive criticism, destructive criticism doesn't really help the other person improve their skills or performance.

Keep in mind that the goal is not to avoid all criticism but to focus on constructive criticism that will help individuals thrive and feel more satisfied in their jobs. This way, the person is more likely to be receptive to constructive criticism and less likely to react defensively. It takes time to learn how to deliver constructive criticism well, but it’s an important skill to develop in order to improve yourself and your team. First, it’s important to listen to what the person has to say before you give feedback. What is more effective is to create a supportive work environment where people are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Talk calmly and respectfully so that the person receiving the feedback feels comfortable, supported, and respected. Second, carefully listen to what the person has to say after you give feedback. Before looking at how to give more positive feedback, it’s important to describe what destructive criticism actually means and the impact it can have on employees. When you explain your reasoning for giving feedback, it can help the recipient better understand your perspective. Giving destructive feedback not only has an impact on the individual but also negatively affects the team as a whole. It’s usually motivated by personal feelings and fails to consider the needs of the recipient. As a result, they give feedback that is vague and unhelpful or avoid giving any feedback at all.

Mob programming benefits for Agile development teams | TechTarget (TechTarget)

Mob programming brings the whole team together for simultaneous code creation and review. If they specify roles and engage, Agile teams can benefit from mobbing ...

At the end of a 15-minute period, the person who is the driver commits the work to version control and hands the meeting host role to the next driver. The main issue is if the team is willing to slow down and explain. If the team doesn't fully support this new method, there's a high probability of a decrease in the overall amount of code written. Next, schedule a single one-hour meeting for the entire team -- ideally, three to nine people. If the entire team engages during meetings, mob programming produces working software that is great quality and structure while building shared knowledge among the team. At the same time, workers frustrated by a practice can demonstrate to their first-line supervisor what the issue is with the approach. Everyone on the team benefits from learning new techniques and practices from their colleagues. The pairs do not pick up new techniques as fast as when the whole team is involved, and they still have skill gaps. Mob programming takes pair programming further, where the entire team works on one piece of code together. With varying capabilities from one person to the next, teamwork can lead to one programmer The navigator tells the driver what to type. Enough programmers are apprehensive about the idea of a person over their shoulder that pair programming has struggled, unlike [continuous integration](https://www.techtarget.com/searchsoftwarequality/tip/Continuous-integration-principles-and-standards-to-implement) and other XP practices.

Eight Ends: Things to know for the GSOC's Co-op Canadian Open (Sportsnet.ca)

The Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling kicks off the new year with the Co-op Canadian Open beginning Tuesday and running through to Sunday at Encana Arena.

Scheidegger won the Canadian Open in 2017 during her GSOC top-tier debut and three teams in the women’s division aim to repeat that feat this time. Jones was a finalist in the Canadian Open in 2015. Team Homan is the only women’s club that has won the Canadian Open more than once with title victories in 2015 and 2019. All teams begin in the A event with the winners staying in A and the losers dropping to B. Like Mouat, Einarson is a Co-op Canadian Open title away from claiming the career Grand Slam. Kerri Einarson’s team has reached the final in five consecutive GSOC tournaments stretching back to the Princess Auto Players’ Championship last season. Right here in Camrose at the 2018 Canadian Open. Despite needing to win a tiebreaker in the WFG Masters, Brad Gushue extended his team’s playoff streak to an impressive 22 consecutive GSOC tournaments. First End: The Co-op Canadian Open plays a significant part in the history of the series as it’s the one that kicked off the Grand Slam era in December 2001. What’s in store for the encore? Originally a men’s invitational, a women’s division was added in 2014 with Eve Muirhead taking the first title. Teams must win a high-profile tournament in order to get in.

Also in this week's Canadiens notebook: How the system in Laval differs from Montreal, and the amateur scouts are converging in town.

There’s a reason NHL players are in the NHL and AHL players are in the AHL; the ability to play with NHL pace and process the game at NHL speed is a big separator. The other portion of the exercise this week will be to consider the Canadiens’ draft capital and to try and determine for the first time where prospects that interest them might be drafted. We won’t get into all the merits and pitfalls of such a decision here — though we will say it is unlikely the Canadiens will do it — but there is another consideration to take into account. Anderson has a rare player profile in the NHL, but it’s one that is not fully exploited outside of a playoff context. When Marc Bergevin acquired him and immediately signed him to a long-term contract, the former Canadiens GM saw his team as one that could do damage in the playoffs on a consistent basis. “The hits in the head, the hits in the shoulder … It all depends on how the other team plays and situations that present themselves to you on the ice. Maybe it’s part of a process, a goal of being more effective in an NHL that is changing. The way he consistently pressured and hit [Jake Muzzin](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jake-muzzin-uYY0rsfwWYseIDsP/), most notably, put one of the Maple Leafs’ most important defencemen on his heels. What was different was not Caufield shooting from the left circle, it was effectively using the player in the bumper position in the middle of the slot, whether it was Dach or [Nick Suzuki](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/nick-suzuki-qwIAe9W3ikVhMWav/) on the top unit. [Toronto Maple Leafs](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/leafs/) that began the Canadiens’ run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, Josh Anderson’s physically punishing style was a major asset for Montreal. “That’s always been an option, but we just haven’t really been doing a good job of getting that bumper open, or the bumper being in the wrong spot at the wrong time,” Suzuki said after practice Sunday.

That is when teams need to decide that a player should be sat and kept out. A player might be better when healthy, but if they are unable to perform a key skill like shooting the puck or making a full-strength pass, they might actually mean more to the team if they are sitting until healthy. Why are teams more than happy to play guys with minor injuries that are inhibiting their level of play instead of sitting them for a healthy player instead?

Transfer watch: 8 players in South America MLS teams should scout (MLSsoccer.com)

We're in the thick of transfer season, folks. MLS teams are making signings left and right as they prepare for the start of the 2023 regular season on Feb.

He has speed and a dangerous right foot, to go along with positional flexibility that allows him to play anywhere across the front three. Minda is a young, dynamic winger who loves to run behind the backline and break into space. He also has a nice long diagonal and a well-weighted through ball in his locker. He pops up in all sorts of dangerous spots in the final third, has a great left foot and good vision. That’s how many minutes Fabricio Diaz has played in each of the last three seasons for Liverpool FC in Uruguay’s Primera División…as a teenager. If Red Bull would be willing to sell to other MLS teams outside of the For a teenager, hitting that goals tally and backing it up with a strong expected goals (xG) tally of 13.2 in league play is impressive. With a good mix of physicality, defensive range, progressive dribbling and connective passing, there’s a reason why Diaz has played so much at such a young age. The 26-year-old has good speed, strong close control and is a real threat from set pieces. Villa is a right-footed Colombian winger who racked up 11 combined non-penalty goals and assists in just under 1,300 minutes in 2022. MLS teams are making signings left and right as they prepare for the start of the 2023 regular season on Feb. Ben Sulayem: New teams should be encouraged to join F1 (ASN Motorsports)

After many F teams rejected the idea of new outfits possibly joining the sport, Mohammed Ben Sulayem said that current teams should be open to this option.

I hope that this will change and that we will be able to have a proper team on the grid. “There is a process, we wait, and it goes. That is the way I would like to see the future: having an OEM in with sustainability.” And to us, we are allowed to have 12 teams on the grid. However, it is unlikely that FOM will go on with Ben Sulayem’s plan if the current teams are not in favor of this idea. In fact, it is believed that the current sum of income of $200 million coming from commercial rights that the teams share, would not be enough should another outfit join the grid.
