'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' Review: An Inept Fox Procedural (Hollywood Reporter)

Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez star in Fox's new missing persons procedural 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit,' featuring Jamie Foxx among its creators.

That doesn’t stop them from getting on a plane, flying to Las Vegas, bursting down the door of a hotel room and flying back to Philadelphia in what appears to be an afternoon — all right in the middle of the case of the week, even though the Philly MPU department appears to be five people. So it’s two episodes with barely-there cases and then the ongoing storyline with Jason and Nikki’s missing son, who isn’t so missing at all. It’s not Role’s fault at all, but Kemi is constantly going through the offices doing purifying ceremonies and rambling about famous men she slept with, and her skillset is “whatever random thing moves the case to the next scene.” But when Nikki tells worried parents “We will get your baby back” and the desire to sing the Chili’s song proved irresistible…I felt bad, but mostly bad that I wasn’t watching something better. It should be noted: When this line is uttered, Mike (Ryan Brussard) hasn’t appeared yet, June (Bre Blair) hasn’t appeared and will not appear in the pilot (though she’s in the second episode), and Jason has not been seen doing anything in private security. It’s just inept, and were it not for the presence of Jamie Foxx as co-creator, I have a hard time imagining the show ever would have made it to air. Doesn’t do much for the characters and their judgment, either. Jason and his trips to the fertility clinic are extremely important to Alert. Jason and Nikki’s son has been gone for six years, but suddenly, right in the middle of the different child abduction case at the center of the pilot, they get information suggesting that Keith (their son) might still be alive. Ideally, neither undermines the momentum of the other and, even more ideally, themes in one will inform and enhance those in the other. She’s just telling Jason things he already knows in case the audience happens to be listening. In fact, he isn’t seen doing a single bit of private security work in either episode sent to critics.

'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' adds a 'Blacklist'-style mystery to its cop ... (CNN)

The broadcast networks continue to keep the lights on with crime procedurals (thank you, "Law & Order" and "FBI"), so it's no surprise they want to refill ...

Not that there’s really time for a whole lot of the personal considerations, since each of the episodes previewed feature stand-alone cases for those who like to see their police dramas end every week with somebody getting handcuffs slapped on them. The details about what broke Nikki and James up have something to do with the disappearance of their child several years earlier, until new developments in the case bring them back together. (The second hour will air in “Alert’s” regular timeslot on Monday night.) It well might as the ongoing mystery gets teased out, but thus far, this latest foray into hunting for missing persons isn’t particularly worth finding. Give “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” some credit for slightly bending the mold, adding an overarching mystery and family drama to its missing-person-of-the-week format. But she reconnects with her ex-husband, a private security specialist named James Grant (Scott Caan, back to sleuthing after his long stint on

Fox's 'Alert': Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez in a Violent Kidnap Drama (Variety)

Jamie Foxx co-created this series, launching January 8 following the NFL on Fox.

This is a well-enough-made show that is far from the most egregious example of television valorizing the cop at the expense of all other facets of society. But it must be said: There’s something a little odd about a show debuting in the post-Pizzagate era that depicts the world as an endless procession of bad men seeking the opportunity to traffic children. We follow the professional and personal lives of two formerly-in-love cops ( [Scott Caan](https://variety.com/t/scott-caan/) and Dania Ramirez) whose marriage was ruined by the disappearance of their son.

"Alert: Missing Persons Unit" Reunites Scott Caan and Dania ... (LaughingPlace.com)

Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez discuss reuniting over a decade after their "Entourage" days in FOX's new crime drama "Alert: Missing Persons Unit."

Who we were then and who we are now is a completely different ballgame, and being parents and dealing with a show that has to deal with missing children is something that's really close to the heart, and it's hard to leave behind.” And it's interesting because we were in Entourage together, and what a completely different vibe that was, because that's fun, and we were completely different people back then. But for them, I was hoping that they would be able to navigate that incredibly tumultuous space with love and friendship and humor, and they do an amazing job of making that feel real. “Our crew and the people that we're working with every single day, the writers, the people that are here and our other cast mates, we become our own family outside of what we film every day, and I think we have that support system to really get through that and be able to say, ‘Okay, that was that. “The first thing he said was, ‘How about something about Amber Alert and the people who go missing?’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that's actually a great idea for a show.’ And he explained to me that Jamie had had an experience one afternoon where he thought his child had gone missing. And I don't mean to sound too goofy or corny, but if you like being creative, if you like digging in as an actor, there isn't much out there that is more complicated problem-solving as an actor than this show has been for me, and I think I knew that right away.

Starring as Jason Grant and Nikki Batista’s long-lost son, Keith, is Graham Verchere, who — at just barely over 20 years old as of now — has almost as much experience with crime movies and TV shows as most of the Alert: Missing Persons Unit cast, if not more. As Mike — who has become Nikki’s love interest since he was assigned to search for Keith years earlier — we have Ryan Broussard, who is another Alert: Missing Persons Unit cast member with previous experience starring on crime TV shows. That was only her first taste of acting in a crime procedural, as she would later appear alongside the in its fourth season and, in 2022, guest-starred in two episodes of Paramount+'s hit spin-off of The Good Wife, The Good Fight. Playing Nikki Batista — head of Philadelphia’s Missing Persons Unit and Grant’s ex-wife — is Scott Caan’s Entourage co-star (for Season 7) Dania Ramirez, who debuted in 1998 as Jay-Z’s girlfriend in the feature-length music video, Streets Is Watching, before making her major motion picture debut in Spike Lee’s 25th Hour. [Hawaii Five-0 cast](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2571424/what-the-hawaii-five-0-cast-is-doing-now-including-grace-park-and-alex-oloughlin) had their final curtain call, but Scott Caan is already back in the crime procedural game. During that series’ run, Caan played himself in the 2013 meta comedy 3 Geezers!, appeared in Barry Levinson’s Rock the Kasbah in 2015, and will return to the big screen with the crime drama One Day as a Lion, which is now in post-production. In 2021, Role made another great guest appearance on the TBS original comedy The Last O.G. He managed to make a name for himself on his own with films like the Will Smith-led Enemy of the State in 1998, 1999’s coming-of-age sports movie classic Varsity Blues, financial crime drama Boiler Room in 2000, and Gone in 60 Seconds with Nicolas Cage the same year. Ramirez also co-writes and narrates the historical podcast drama, Sisters of the Underground. Co-created by The Blacklist executive producer John Eisendrath and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, the series — which premieres tonight after NFL on Fox before moving to its regular Monday night time slot at 9 p.m.

'Alert' mines headlines for missing persons stories, emotions (STLtoday.com)

When Dania Ramirez ended a text with “namaste,” the show's creator knew he had the right person for “Alert: Missing Persons Unit.”

In some cases, people are running away and are desperate not to be found. In some cases, people are taken and are desperate to be found. “We’re able to allow each other to be vulnerable in those moments and to share that with the masses: ‘OK, I’m going to unveil that part of me.’ That’s what the world likes to connect to. “Playing with those ideas, week to week, month to month is unprecedented.” “When we had an honest conversation about who we were as people and the messages we wanted to put out, we really ended up connecting,” the actress says. The minute we talked, I realized that Dania was someone who was comfortable with that.”

Alert: Missing Persons Unit Boss Breaks Down The Series Premiere (Deadline)

Alert: Missing Persons Unit, a new procedural about the Philadelphia Police Department's Missing Person's Unit, premiered Sunday on Fox.

I think that we are going to give the audience very clear answers about Keith, almost in every episode, and certainly I think that they will get some satisfaction by the end of the season. That is a question that is going to be central to the show, and we will give the audience concrete answers in most episodes to the question that is being asked on that topic in each episode. I think that from that experience, I have come to believe in its value, and I think [it’s interesting] in a police setting where the solution to the crime or the mystery of the missing person is ultimately going to be fact based. And I think that yes, it’s great to see someone channeling a non-Western type of belief, if for no other reason than it will dramatize how similar it is to every other type of belief. So it’s a situation that not only strains the relationships between Mike and Nikki and Jason, but it also will cause friction between Nikki and Jason because they won’t always agree on how to move forward with Keith, both on the question of who he is, and on the question of how to just reintegrate a now grown child into their world. It’s going to become evident to the parents, and once the parents start to wonder why their daughter is not bonding with their son that will begin a series of stories that will peel back the question about Keith. He understands that Nikki and Jason need the time to reconstruct their family. Nikki is very clear with both the men in her life that this is a very delicate balancing act between wanting to get her family back and also continue her relationship with Mike. But everybody who watches television is so trained to look for the mystery that may or may not be there that no one missed the fact that by tearing up the pages in the diary, he might be wanting to hide something. DEADLINE: I’m also glad you mentioned Keith, because by the end of the first episode it’s clear there is something off. In my case, when one of my sons went missing, I was showing him how to ride his bike, and he started riding his bike, and we were on the block that we lived on and he went around the corner. That is a question that is going to be central to the show, and we will give the audience concrete answers in most episodes to the question that is being asked on that topic in each episode,” Eisendrath told Deadline about the mystery, adding: “What I like is the situation where the audience may be ahead of our heroes.

Hawaii Five-0 ended its 10-season run back in 2020, just before the massive production shutdowns caused by the COVID lockdown. The show had a strong cast,

It should also be said that Scott Caan seemed to give his all whenever he appeared in the series, and fans would probably like him and the cast to return at some point. Anxiety is a Philadelphia thriller centered on the Missing Persons department, and the first shots give the impression that it will be tense. Initially, it was assumed that Kaan would play the main role and develop another CBS drama, Topangaland, which was supposed to be his first sequel to Hawaii Five-0. To be honest, he could have just left the series, but clearly wanted to stay and continue playing Danny “Danno” Williams. If you noticed, for the first three years, when I didn’t have a wife and child, I didn’t drop out of any series; it only happened when I started starting a family. However, many pay attention to the fact that during his tenure, he missed several episodes in each season.
