The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly signed first baseman Brandon Belt to a one-year, $9.3 million deal, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi confirms.

Belt battled injuries with the Giants last season, appearing in just 78 games while dealing with a knee injury that prematurely ended his season. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was the first to report the deal. The former San Francisco Giant has played all 12 years of his big league career in the Bay Area to date, which include an all-star appearance in 2016 and two World Series wins in 2012 and 2014.

Belt owns a career on-base percentage of .356, which is an area the Blue Jays have prioritized. The 34-year-old is coming off a down year, though, with his .213 average and .676 OPS both outliers compared to his career numbers. Belt has been a fixture with the Giants for 12 seasons, winning World Series rings in 2012 and ’14.

Belt will join the Blue Jays on a one-year deal, making $9.3 million next season, per reports.

While the Jays remain heavily right-handed, Belt will join added lefty hitters Daulton Varsho and Kevin Kiermaier to balance out the lineup. Injury issues have hampered the 34-year-old throughout his 12-season MLB career, but the Jays won't expect Belt to be an everyday player in 2023. Across 2020 and 2021, Belt posted a .988 OPS with 38 homers in 148 games.

Blue Jays add another veteran bat, signing Brandon Belt to one-year ... (Toronto Star)

The long-time San Francisco Giant has battled injuries lately, but could give Toronto some power off the bench at a bargain price.

In a couple months, we’ll begin to find out whether these changes were for the better. None were to blame for the Jays’ early exits, but their departures still deemed necessary to create room for a new group of players and a fresh look for their roster. After disappointing endings to each of the last two seasons, it was predictable that the Jays were going to shake up their roster this winter. According to FanGraph's Roster Resource, the Jays are approximately $9 million over the $233-million competitive tax balance threshold, and they might not be done shopping quite yet. It’s a gamble but one they can afford considering the depth elsewhere on the roster. The problem is that injuries have prevented Belt from being a regular contributor each of the past two years. Belt has consistently been well-above average hitter since breaking into the league in 2011, but his performance went to another level from 2020-21. at first base and he gives the Jays a potential big bat off the bench, a luxury they haven’t experienced in recent years. The 34-year-old Belt likely will become the Jays’ designated hitter whenever Alejandro Kirk is behind the plate. Belt, who hit free agency after playing 12 seasons for the San Francisco Giants, will earn $9.3 million (U.S.) in 2023.
