Patriots vs. Bills takeaways: Special teams miscues, Josh Allen end ... (NBC Sports Boston)

The Patriots were competitive Sunday in Orchard Park, but two kickoff return TDs by Buffalo's Nyheim Hines proved to be too much to overcome.

New England's defense actually played a decent game, as the Patriots outgained the Bills 347-327 on offense. Hines' pair of returns were demoralizing for a Patriots team that finally looked competent on offense and had held Allen and Co. New England's normally rock-solid third unit has been plagued by miscues this season, and two in Week 18 may have cost the team a playoff spot. The Patriots promptly went three-and-out on their first offensive drive -- but then the tide turned. The Miami Dolphins beat the New York Jets 11-6 in their season finale, so they'll be the No. The Patriots are officially eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.

Buffalo Bills TE Dawson Knox touchdown against New England Patriots in Week 18.

The Bills managed the extreme emotions surrounding Hamlin and took care of business. "I can't remember a play that touched me like that," quarterback Josh Allen said after the game.

Josh Allen, Bills end Patriots season in emotional 35-23 win (Boston Herald)

The Patriots (8-9) have now suffered two losing seasons in the last three years and haven't won a playoff game since Feb. 2019. Quarterback Mac Jones played ...

"As a captain of that unit, (I) feel like we cost the team the game." While the Bills fumbled possession back, all the Pats could manage was a 24-yard field goal for their first lead at 7:06 left in the quarter. A lot of ups and downs, learned a lot about each other, learned a lot about football. The team's two longest-tenured captains and players, Matthew Slater and Devin McCourty, are contemplating retirement. But there, Jones lofted a curious jump-ball pass for Nelson Agholor along the left sideline that Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White snatched instead at his own 2-yard line. Buffalo’s Nyheim Hines scored a 97-yard kick return touchdown on the opening play of a storybook 35-23 Bills win that doubled as a nightmarish end to a miserable Patriots season. Undeterred, the Bills answered with their own winding drive, a 13-play, 75-yarder sustained by Allen’s brilliance. Hines scored a second kick return touchdown in the third quarter, and Bills quarterback Josh Allen went 19-of-31 for 254 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Jones settled in on his next series with three play-action completions, an unusually high number for an offense that entered having called the second-fewest play-action passes in the league. Allen converted twice on third down with strikes to Stefon Diggs (7 catches, 104 yards, TD) and Gabriel Davis, then rolled right and rifled a 4-yard touchdown to tight end Dawson Knox. “The guys in the room, we fought through a lot this year. Quarterback Mac Jones played one of his better games, finishing 26-of-40 for 243 yards and three touchdowns, though three second-half interceptions, including two fired in desperation, undercut the Pats’ comeback efforts.

Josh Allen's Quote About Nyheim Hines' First TD Makes Buffalo Cry (wyrk.com)

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen held back tears talking about Nyheim Hines' opening kickoff return for a touchdown against the New England Patriots.

The first Hines kickoff touchdown was one of the greatest plays in Bills history. The first kickoff return for a touchdown came three years and three months after the previous one for the Bills, which is also the number Hamlin wears (3). Miami beat the New York Jets on Sunday to help them make the postseason.
