'The Last of Us': Every Zombie Type Explained, From Runners to ... (Collider.com)

It’s the source of the world’s downfall, the thing that makes it so dangerous, and it’s what makes Ellie so remarkable. The Cordyceps virus in this story takes on a day or two to fully take over the brain but the longer the host body is infected, the more the virus transforms it, and so we see varied types of zombies populating the world of The Last of Us. The spread of the fungus has rendered the host blind, so they must use echolocation to get around. In these enclosed spaces filled with the virus, the Cordyceps will spread even after the host's death across the walls and floor, growing like a more traditional fungus until it begins to produce spores that will fill the space. Their attacks are stereotypically a bit stilted and sluggish as you might expect from a zombie, and they don’t yet have any of the special or dangerous abilities that come from a long-term infection. In The Last of Us, this virus mutated and spread to humans causing them to experience the same sort of brutal loss of self as they succumb to the virus that preserves their body but not their mind until they become mindless drones that will slowly grow those fungal features. The virus in the world of The Last of Us is based on one that actually exists in the real world: Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. As opposed to the zombies of many other stories, the zombies in The Last of Us aren’t actually dead. It’s the earliest phase and shortest phase of infection in which the host's personality has disappeared, and they are rendered into something akin to a rabid animal. After succumbing to the virus, the body will enter the first phase of being an actual zombie. Each zombie story has to set itself apart in some way and make its zombies unique and The Last of Us tackled this with its own twist that impacted the gameplay as well as the world-building. The world fell quickly and violently to zombies 20 years ago and the story picks up with the first glimmer of hope the world has seen since in the form of Ellie, a young girl with an inexplicable immunity to the infection.

'The Last of Us' Directors Are Perfect Choices to Adapt the ... (Collider.com)

While video game adaptations have had a rough history, it finally looks like the entertainment industry has found a way to bring justice to classic games.

Like The Last of Us, the film explores a bleak reality through an individual experience, which somehow makes it even more heartbreaking and disturbing. The film explores the Srebrenica massacre through the eyes of a schoolteacher who watches both the adults and children in her community sent to their death. The Last of Us subverts many of the clichés in post-apocalyptic storytelling and recontextualizes familiar genre tropes in favor of a more realistic story. The mix of exciting thriller elements with gripping material signifies that Abbasi is the perfect choice to helm The Last of Us’ complex tone. [The Last of Us](https://collider.com/tag/the-last-of-us/), HBO’s series inspired by the 2013 game of the same name. is expected to be one of the biggest films of this year.

But clearly the emotional story is in the right hands, as despite being a zombie show, Craig Mazin knows where the real heart lies: “I’m not interested in the zombies! Therefore, one can wonder how the TV show, which is a more passive medium, will adapt this concept. As she hunts those responsible one by one, she is confronted with the devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions. “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.” Game of Thrones of course being infamous for extending past the original books, to poor results. Druckmann and Mazin hint – but don’t outright say – that their second season will cover the table-flipping narrative of Naughty Dog’s bold Part II sequel (“I don’t like filler,” Mazin says).” The official plot for Part 2 is as such: Five years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming.

While Druckmann and Mazin don’t outright say that a second season of The Last of Us would follow the story of the second game in their interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they hint that season two would at least start to explore the story told in the divisive video game sequel. If they do adapt Part II into a potential second season, Druckmann and Mazin seem prepared to either end the series after that story is told or wait for another game to adapt rather than continue the story separate from the games. Over 37 Million Sales for Last of Us Franchise | GameLuster (GameLuster)

Naughty Dog said that as of December 2022, the global sales for the Last of Us series has passed an impressive 37 million copies.

Currently, we know to expect season one of the HBO adaptation, which is arriving on 15th January; the PC version of The Last of Us Part I on 3rd March; and the tabletop role-playing game, The Last of Us: Escape the Dark, in December. However, that number is only in small part due to the recent release of the The Last of Us Part I remake, which has been selling poorly to the point of even being [outsold by the critically panned Saints Row reboot](https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2022/09/05/the-last-of-us-part-1-sales-launch-physical-uk/) in the UK. This brings us to the idea of a third installment, and where exactly one might go in terms of its story and characters. Ellie doesn’t deserve to spend the rest of her life alone, and Abby has a right to find new friends and family after all she once held dear was unfairly taken away. Once again, where it all goes is left up to interpretation, and the one true path will only be revealed once Naughty Dog lifts the veil and dares to take us there. At the time, we didn’t need to imagine that ultimatum, our minds filling in the blanks and leading us to a final destination that either mirrored Joel’s own rejection of the truth or went somewhere much darker. In addition, Mazin and Druckmann reiterated their fondness for endings so don't expect The Last of Us series to go on forever and ever like The Walking Dead seemed to do, but will instead find a natural end that shouldn't go far beyond the timeline of the games. The Last of Us Part 2 has been divisive among players, with many disliking the direction that Druckmann decided to take, but it seemed to set a new bar for storytelling in video games, so it is ripe material for adaptation. However, overall the series is faithful to the game and fans can expect to see many of the scenes, characters, dialogue, and settings that were in the game rendered pretty accurately in the show.
