Renfield trailer: Finally, Nic Cage is Dracula (Polygon)

The Menu's Nicholas Hoult stars alongside Nicolas Cage in a new horror comedy that reimagines Bram Stoker's Dracula book in the modern day.

[Empire](https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/nicolas-cage-playing-pop-art-dracula-renfield-exclusive/) recently, “This will be a pop-art Dracula. This is in that Warhol vein.” Hell yeah. McKay has updated Bram Stoker’s classic for the modern era, though as evidenced in the trailer, both Renfield and Dracula aren’t quite fit for it. The movie is awful, but it made for some [incredible memes](https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/Jfa032SBaNLjzg_E_JXCqA--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTY0MDtoPTQ4MA--/https://media.zenfs.com/en/homerun/feed_manager_auto_publish_494/d99454ecd37d214296091b98de896aef) because Cage went hard. Imagine no longer: This spring we get Renfield, a horror comedy from Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The Lego Batman Movie) starring Nicholas Hoult, the unhinged familiar to one Count Dracula, played in this version by Cage.

'Renfield' trailer revives the vampire genre with a superhero twist (Inverse)

The iconic vampire gets a new look thanks to a horror comedy starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage.

Nicholas Hoult has experience in the “monster rom-com” subgenre thanks to the underseen Warm Bodies, and his humble turn in The Great Season 2 is one of the best comedic-but-romantic acting performances in the last few years. It looks completely different from any other vampire movie we’ve seen, and it looks good too, so think of it as the anti-Morbius. Just as Guillermo is the breakout star of What We Do in the Shadows, it’s time for the OG vampire’s OG assistant to get his moment in the spotlight.

No stranger to the comedy-horror genre, either, Cage starred in plague-comedy Mom and Dad in 2017, which [the Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/film/mom-and-dad-review-nicholas-cage-is-at-his-ott-best-in-this-hilarious-horror-a3785801.html) enjoyed, saying Cage was “at his OTT best in this hilarious horror.” Speaking to Empire about his forthcoming role, the 58-year-old actor said: “When I got a sense of where McKay wanted to go, I realised the movie has a comedic, pop art attitude... Nicolas Cage as Dracula! Yes, the trailer for Renfield has arrived. (Literary Hub)

Throughout the years, Renfield has been played (to varying degrees of lunacy) by Tom Waits, Peter MacNicol, Dwight Frye, Klaus Kinski, Mark Gatiss, Arte Johnson ...

The big news about the movie is that Cage plays Renfield’s terrible boss Dracula, which is a very exciting development but also feels like it should have happened already? (Just because I love Dracula so much I just have to drop in a little bit of lit crit for a second and say that even in the novel, not much is known about him—even how he came to be Dracula’s slave when he is stuck in a sanitorium in England and there is no reference to an Englishman visiting Castle Dracula prior to Jonathan Harker’s trip. Does Renfield have anything meaningful to say about bloodsucking masters and put-upon factotums beyond the joke of its premise?

Say this!'" Jones continued, "He pitched me a line, a joke to say, and it was really, really cool just to see him so in it and fun, and having the time of his life." And I watched this man come in to work, sit in the make-up trailer, get all made up as Dracula, and then show up on set and was so excited, and so -- oh my god, I almost got a little emotional because it was really moving to see someone love the craft so much. By the end of the conversation with our own Perri Nemiroff, Jones spoke a little bit about

Also, the camp potential of portraying Cage as the “classic” Bela Lugosi-inspired Dracula but in a straight contemporary context is HIGH. I am super into all of this, but I am especially into rendering Dracula in black-and-white, that’s just a fun visual touch, and I am into the way Renfield shouts “No!” when Dracula comes into the community center for group therapy. He’s one of cinema’s best silly boys, he’s a great actor with PHENOMENAL timing and delivery, and he commits to playing idiots, losers, fops, and wastrels better than anyone (see also: The Great, in which he plays all four of those things at once).
