The Menu (2022) – Review | Satirical Thriller | Heaven of Horror (Heaven of Horror)

THE MENU is a deeply satirical thriller now out on HBO Max (US). It is razor-sharp and offers many surprises. Read our The Menu review >

THE MENU is a thriller that is satirical and sharp in its social commentary. The screenplay was written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, both of whom have worked a bit in comedy. As a fan of genre movies and series, you should definitely not rob yourself of this experience. Of course without having seen the movie, because that kind of “fodder” isn’t accepted as actual filmmaking. Humor is used in an extremely dark and satirical way as social commentary. And the various kinds of “fans” like The Connoisseur, who probably has to tell everyone else how the movie should really be seen and understood. The same goes for The Menu, where some of the guests go to this extremely expensive restaurant because money is no object. We are served (pun intended) an ensemble cast, where we are introduced to a multitude of characters played by wonderful and well-known actors. In addition, Mark Mylod has also directed Game of Thrones, Entourage, and We get all the same “characters” in both food and film; The film critics who either seek to praise or destroy an artist’s work. Read our The Menu movie review here! The movie already received a lot of publicity after screenings at film festivals.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Menu' on HBO Max, a Slashy Satire Starring ... (Decider)

Anya Taylor-Joy co-stars as the patron who smells what the chef is truly cooking.

It leads to a great joke, but frustratingly, to little else, one of a handful of yarn strands the film could stand to tug and unfurl a little more. But [The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover](https://decider.com/movie/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-her-lover/) got there first. Perhaps this is because that pinnacle is also when the work becomes a parody of itself; or because one’s hunger – on both a base biological level or for creative progress – is never fully satiated, but merely temporarily assuaged; or because the only people who can appreciate it are shitbirds and cretins. “I’m in the ‘presenter’ phase of my career,” he says; he plans to pitch a food-travel reality series, and Slowik surely doesn’t take kindly to being a tool to develop a lazy actor’s palate. Slowik’s diabolical plan is amusing – and bloody and ironic and, if I were to break a promise from earlier in this review, I’d say something right here about the justified serving of desserts. the food, and introduces courses with anecdotes, insight and self-aggrandizement followed by the serving of a quarter-ounce of foam or a miniscule dripping of liquid on a leaf. And Elsa (Hong Chang), the maitre’d and Chef Slowik’s chief enabler, and because she knows what goes on here and is entirely complicit with it, she carries herself cold and steely like Dracula’s butler. Margot doesn’t really deserve it, although she raises Chef’s ire by refusing to eat the bread course, which of course arrives with no bread, and just a few micro-squidges of sauce on a plate. The dining group consists of several assholes: A haughty food critic (Janet McTeer) and her enabling editor (Paul Adelstein), a famous washed-up actor (John Leguizamo) and his assistant (Aimee Carrero), three wiseass tech bros (Arturo Castro, Mark St. You know the kind, where the chef considers his food to be art on par with Picasso, and implores that one not “eat” but “taste” and “savor” and etc. And we do mean excursion – a handful of patrons of the edible arts coughs up who knows how much dough to get on a boat to an island populated only by chef Julian Slowik (Fiennes) and his staff, who harvest the local flora and fauna for their posh-as-eff dining experience. Mark Mylod, an executive producer and director for [Succession](https://decider.com/show/succession/), helms this tar-black comedy starring Ralph Fiennes as a chef so high-end, he can get away with serving sociopathy as his main course, and Anya Taylor-Joy as seemingly the only diner among his uber-exclusive clientele unwilling to chow down.

'The Menu' Ending, Explained: What Is The Meaning Of The Film ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

The film's premise is not complex—a group of hand-picked elite guests arrives on a private island for a dining experience at celebrity chef Julian Slowik's ...

The outcome would still be the same, he points out, and Margot would still die at the end, but the only difference would be that she would be on the team of chefs and servers when it happened. Besides, Margot is not really part of the group that Slowik wants to make his plan against, and he also does not seem to mind that she gets away. And so, to somehow reach this eternal position, he makes himself part of Slowik’s dinner plan and shoots himself dead in front of the guests as part of the show. It is very possible to believe that Slowik knew she would escape from the very beginning, but he also enjoyed the fact that there was this individual ready to call him out and outright challenge his reputation. The important fact is that she has successfully escaped the death trap island, and that too by dismissing Julian Slowik’s expertise. Instead of any usual rendition of it, the chef and his team prepare the exact dish on a large scale, making the guests wear marshmallows on their bodies and chocolate hats on their heads. Now, she reveals she was the one to have proposed the idea of keeping death as a part of the menu, and as part of the show, she stabs Slowik in his leg as well. There is also a very evident feeling of Slowik’s ego being a crucial aspect behind his actions, for the man is also part of the culinary elitism that he so much hates. To Slowik, this is a clear indication that the people he tries to please do not even take notice of the art that he is creating. Such negligence toward art was something that he did not wish to tolerate, and George Diaz was a fine example of it. Margot is indirectly reminded time and again that she is not supposed to have this experience. “The Menu” is certainly an unusual film in some aspects; it is fulfilling to watch and leaves you pondering for long.

'The Menu' Themes, Explained: Did Margot & Julian's Final ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Mark Mylod's film, "The Menu" apparently follows a couple, Tyler and Margot, to the restaurant (named Hawthorne) owned by celebrity chef Julian Slowik, ...

And here’s the kicker, as Julian thinks he and Erin are one and the same, I am guessing that he sees her liberation as the one good deed of his miserable life. The backstory allows Erin to disarm Julian, and the call to the fake coast guard proves that Erin wants to live and hasn’t fully submitted to his shtick. The editing, some of the cinematography, the production design, and the culinary moments are worthy of applause. And as Erin makes her way to the speedboat that the coast guard brought in, Julian turns the restaurant, the cooks, the customers, and himself into a s’mores-based dish, and everything goes up in flames. The problem with the film lies in the fact that Julian sees a bit of himself in Margot and sees himself as somebody who has been oppressed by the wheel of classism and capitalism. Secondly, as he starts to understand that there’s no way for him to make her eat his food because of her dogged determination to not conform to his rules, he paves the way for her liberation. When that line is drawn, we understand that in that room, Julian thinks he’s the oppressor, and his customers are the ones who need to be oppressed. It seems like he fully expects her to deviate from her task, go to his house, learn about his backstory, and call for help (the coast guard who arrives turns out to be a member of the staff too). Firstly, he wants to deconstruct her because, unlike the rest of his customers, he doesn’t know her backstory, and that’s ruining his final meal. Margot is the odd one out, and that’s why she’s given a choice to die with the customers or with the cooks. On the one day that Julian wasn’t working, he went to watch George’s movie, and he didn’t like it. Somewhere along the halfway point of “The Menu,” Julian makes it obvious that this is going to be his and his customers’ final meal.
