Jakub Vrana Placed On Waivers (prohockeyrumors.com)

Vrana, 26, is in the second season of a three-year, $15.75MM contract he signed with the Red Wings in 2021 after being acquired from the Washington Capitals.

If [Steve Yzerman](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/y/yzermst01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&utm_campaign=2023-01-03_hr) no longer believes in Vrana as a core piece, he could be looking for a little financial freedom by offering him up to the rest of the league. This could be nothing more than the Red Wings, believing his contract will get him through waivers, allowing Vrana to get his game back in order at the minor league level. His contract, while expensive, does expire after next season and leave him an unrestricted free agent, meaning for a club like the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, or Arizona Coyotes, there would be the possibility of a short-term flip for more assets a year from now. Since arriving in Detroit, though, Vrana has been in and out of the lineup, and has just 39 games played as a Red Wing. Several rebuilding clubs have the cap space necessary to fit him in, and given his relative youth and strong history in the league, it may be worth the chance. Jakub Vrana has until 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday to clear waivers. His contract runs through the 2023-24 season and has a $5.25 million AAV.

[Washington Capitals](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/capitals/) selected him with the No. Vrana arrived to the Red Wings via trade on April 12, 2021, which sent [Anthony Mantha](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/anthony-mantha-R2NULzQIqC9IFXZa/) to the Capitals. [Robby Fabbri](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/robby-fabbri-8M0rKMhFTSEL12Tp/) expected back from injury on Wednesday. He missed significant time last season after shoulder surgery, but in 39 total games with the club, he has 22 goals and 32 points. Vrana has been dynamic when he’s been in Detroit’s lineup for the last three seasons. It would also put an added spotlight on the future of forward If things went well from there, he could then return to the Red Wings. Given Detroit’s willingness to expose him, though, it also would not be shocking to see a trade if Vrana clears waivers. If he’s not, he can remain in Grand Rapids beyond the maximum 14-day limit. Vrana’s cap hit, which is $5.25 million for this season and next, will be prohibitive to some teams who are tight against the cap. Vrana was paid while he received treatment through the joint program, and he has not publicly said why he entered the program. The jointly funded program assists players and their families with mental health, substance abuse and other matters.

Senators Should Avoid Claiming Jakub Vrana (The Hockey Writers)

Jakub Vrana was placed on waivers Tuesday, and despite the temptations, the Ottawa Senators should avoid submitting a claim on the winger.

Falling in love with the game in the early 2000’s, and taking in as much knowledge as I could since then. All in all, I think it boils down to the first part I mentioned; the lack of money available this off-season. On the third line, as I mentioned, Joseph and Motte are both injured, but they have Parker Kelly and Jake Lucchini filling in right now, and that has been working great. With Norris returning, that rounds out the top-six to where it was at the start of the season, and especially on the wing, there isn’t room right there. Vrana has been seen as a legitimate top-six winger for the majority of his career, including his time in Detroit, where he has registered 32 points in 39 games, but there is also the version of Vrana that we saw demoted to the fourth line in Washington, and was even a healthy scratch. In a perfect world, Vrana would be a great addition, now is not the time to make this move, but the production isn’t a big enough concern to warrant this kind of risk right now.

I will say this, Yzerman isn’t someone who forgets, and he’s proven in the past that he isn’t afraid to make a controversial move. Yzerman also shipped Jonathan Drouin off to Montreal after the two failed to see eye to eye in exchange for Mikhail Sergachev. He’s only appeared in 39 games since joining the Red Wings in a deal that Detroit sent Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals. The Red Wings would need to create space in anticipation of the return of Robby Fabbri, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Vrana. Yzerman is looking for players that fit his version of what he envisions the Detroit Red Wings to be today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. You could say Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a splash Tuesday afternoon but in a somewhat unusual way.

Making sense of Detroit Red Wings' decision to risk losing Jakub ... (Detroit Free Press)

Steve Yzerman and Detroit Red Wings made a stunning decision to waive Jakub Vrana. Here's some insight into the move and what it means moving forward.

Read more on the [Detroit Red Wings](https://www.freep.com/sports/red-wings/) and sign up for our [Red Wings newsletter](https://profile.freep.com/newsletters/red-wings-headlines/). The appeal is getting a player who is 26 and who needs only one shot to score — and getting him for nothing. That was a major setback for a team that at the time did not have much in the way of scoring power. Vrana is the type of player contenders covet at the trade deadline, and now he is available for free. Losing Vrana this season for a significant chunk was a blow to the Wings, who counted on the forward to be a major part of their offense. With Tyler Bertuzzi and Filip Zadina projected to return later this month, the Wings will also have to trim a goaltender at some point. Her latest book, “On the Clock: Behind the Scenes with the Detroit Red Wings at the NHL Draft,” is available from [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Clock-Detroit-Wings-Behind-Scenes/dp/1629379859/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1663172706&sr=8-1), [Barnes & Noble](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/on-the-clock-helene-st-james/1140926103?ean=9781629379852) and Triumph Books. And if it doesn't work out, a team could do what the Wings did, and place him on waivers again. But Lalonde did indicate the Wings weren't going to expose Hellberg, who has emerged as backup to Ville Husso during Alex Nedeljkovic's struggles. That is because Robby Fabbri is ready to make his season debut after rehabilitating his right knee from offseason surgery. "I foresee us holding three goalies for a little bit," Lalonde said. Red Wings Place Jakub Vrana on Waivers (Detroit Hockey Now)

The Detroit Red Wings made room for Robby Fabbri to return to their 23-person roster by waiving Filip Vrana.

When he rejoined the Red Wings before the holiday, Vrana said he didn’t want to discuss why he entered the program. In mid-October, he entered the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program. But the Red Wings were disappointed in Vrana last season when he showed up and immediately needed shoulder surgery. Undoubtedly, some general managers around the NHL are trying to find out today why the Red Wings put Vrana on waivers. The Red Wings, Yzerman specifically, clearly reached the conclusion they can live without Vrana. One theory was the Red Wings would put No.

Jakub Vrana, Red Wings at crossroads after forward placed on ... (The Athletic)

The Red Wings made the surprise choice to waive Vrana, who is currently on a conditioning loan, in order to activate forward Robby Fabbri.

Vrana had previously been bothered by a labrum injury, but didn’t want to get surgery during the summer preceding the season because he [viewed it as a last resort](https://theathletic.com/3057308/2022/01/07/i-cant-wait-to-be-out-there-again-jakub-vrana-back-on-the-ice-but-still-no-firm-return-date/). Detroit has waived veterans Danny DeKeyser and Jonathan Ericsson in recent seasons, only for both to return and play for the club once again. There’s no doubt Detroit was in a tricky situation by not wanting to take young, waiver-exempt players out of the lineup, and with Fabbri slated to return from injury. But by waiving him, it’s clear the Red Wings are at least comfortable with the idea of losing Vrana without getting anything in return. To that end, it is worth noting: While few players in the league can match Vrana’s release, he has not consistently had a major impact off the puck. Detroit also has several waiver-exempt young forwards it could have sent down, and although Derek Lalonde had already said earlier this week that those players [would not come out of the lineup Wednesday](https://theathletic.com/4052764/2023/01/02/red-wings-berggren-soderblom-veleno/) (with [Adam Erne](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/adam-erne-eBZO6vi04Vix8mqO/) instead expected to sit to make room for Fabbri), that decision now takes on a new significance. But of all the directions the [Red Wings](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/redwings/) could have gone to make that space, waiving Vrana — perhaps the most talented pure goal scorer on the team — was an unexpected one. [being acquired in the 2021 Anthony Mantha trade](https://theathletic.com/2514833/2021/04/12/why-the-red-wings-could-see-real-upside-from-trading-anthony-mantha-for-jakub-vrana-and-picks/) — a high-end scoring rate, especially considering his ice time. Detroit initially planned for the loan to only last three games, but Monday the team said it planned to have Vrana instead spend the full two weeks with the Griffins. That made sense given how long he was away in the assistance program. Because of the size of that cap charge, it’s entirely possible he will clear waivers.
