Steelers complete comeback to beat Ravens: How Pittsburgh ... (The Athletic)

The Steelers beat the Ravens 16-13 on Sunday night to preserve their playoff hopes.

[Cameron Heyward](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/cameron-heyward-feBsAS6S9A9gmWyX/) unnecessary roughness penalty setting up [Tyler Huntley](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/tyler-huntley-Szw0e8PVKC4tJkv9/)’s 10-yard score to [Isaiah Likely](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/isaiah-likely-k7h9gooAw8d1FaHX/). [Browns](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/browns/) and the help they need to finish this season with an unlikely playoff berth. The Ravens entered Sunday with the league’s third-best run defense, holding the opposition to 87.5 yards per game on the ground. And unless Jackson comes back fully healthy and confident, it’s hard to imagine the Ravens winning a game in the playoffs, never mind making a run. The Ravens spoke confidently about getting things together ahead of the playoffs, but they’re just about out of time. [NFL](https://theathletic.com/nfl/)’s highest-paid defense weren’t living up to their hefty paychecks. If that wasn’t painfully obvious before Sunday night, it was after the game. Harris responded with his first 100-plus yard rushing output of the season. Somehow, the chances of seizing a playoff spot are still possible entering the final week of the season. Another week and another game-winning drive later, those inexperienced offensive players are continuing to mature in front of a primetime audience. On so many instances this year, the Steelers appeared to be careening toward the first losing season of the Tomlin era. Per Austin Mock’s model, the Steelers’ playoff odds jumped from 2.3 percent entering Week 17 to 18.1 percent after beating the Ravens.

The Breakdown: Five Thoughts on Loss to Steelers (BaltimoreRavens.com)

The Steelers flipped the script as Baltimore's run defense got cracked and the offense didn't run the game out.

- The Ravens could have knocked the Steelers out of the playoff hunt and guaranteed their first losing season under Tomlin. Brandon Stephens made an excellent play breaking up a goal-line fade to Pickens on the Steelers' first drive to force a field goal. The Ravens had Pickett running for his life on numerous occasions, but he often found an open receiver to avoid trouble. On the second three-and-out Dobbins and the line was stuffed on third-and-2. A monster wide receiver isn't walking through the doors for the playoff run. Considering the state of the Ravens' passing attack right now, Baltimore cannot afford to stub its toe – even if only in some key situations – and expect to win. But the Ravens never got their 1-2 punch going with him and Gus Edwards, and the most frustrating part was they didn't run it effectively when it mattered most. If not, the Ravens and Bengals will have a winner-take-all game in Week 18 in Cincinnati. The Ravens were no slouches running the ball either. The locker room was as quiet and frustrated as any this season. Steelers running back Najee Harris became the first player to run for 100 yards this season against the Ravens. This time, the Steelers piled up 198 rushing yards and held Baltimore to 120.

For the second week in a row, QB Kenny Pickett orchestrated a game-winning drive with less than a minute remaining to keep the Steelers' slim playoff hopes ...

"Confidence that I had in myself is showing up on the field, and I think guys are starting to feel that, which is always good," Pickett said. "He did a great job of extending and slipping past the linebacker," Pickett said. You have all the confidence in the world." "We never questioned that, but seeing him delivering those big moments, and the guys stepping up and especially the line ... "Going into the huddle and seeing how confident everyone is, as a quarterback you know they have a lot of belief in you, and I have a lot of belief in those guys in the huddle. "We've seen our guys go out and ball out and practice all season long. He's only the third rookie quarterback to win in Baltimore, joining Pickett rifled a pass to a scrambling Harris. Pickett completed 5 of 6 attempts for 64 yards and converted two short-yardage third downs on sneaks to drive the Steelers 80 yards in 3 minutes and 20 seconds, capped with the 10-yard TD to Harris. He's always ready to be that guy in the moments that we need him. He was 3-of-7 on such throws prior to that drive, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. And it's just good to see the young guy.

Even though the stats suggest that the Ravens are in the upper third of the league in most defensive categories, we all need to remember that those stats were in part the byproduct of playing a last place schedule. He’s played at least 35% of the offensive snaps over the past eight weeks and his leaping grab on the winning drive showcased the confidence Pickett has in him. Pittsburgh’s push has come in lockstep with an offensive line that is starting to dominate the line of scrimmage. Given the way they were running the ball, the fact offensive coordinator Matt Canada didn’t call for a deep shot off play action was baffling. Sims began the season buried on the depth chart. For a team with a microscopic margin for error, Boswell can’t afford to be shaky. So, it’s a step in the right direction.” For the second straight week, they ran out of options in the fourth quarter. There’s plenty of credit to go around, including a vastly improved running game, the return of all-everything linebacker T.J. It’s not always perfect, but we worked our tails off throughout the entire season to just keep battling back.” There was something about the way Pickett carried himself when things got tight that Tomlin couldn’t shake. Tomlin, however, was focused on the type of things impossible to measure with a rule or a stopwatch. Pickett was — heck is — hardly considered a sure thing.
