IIHF - Remembering Forsberg's 31 (IIHF)

Despite the magic of Connor Bedard at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, the single-tournament point record of Peter Forsberg from 1993 may never be ...

He had two more assists in a 4-2 win over the United States, a game played in Uppsala, and a day later, back in Gavle, he had another hat trick and a couple of helpers in a 9-2 route of rivals Finland. In the end, Forsberg’s 1993 tournament remains in a league of its own. Pearn got them going, and they scored three in the second and built a 4-2 lead early in the third. But after the game the Canadian players suggested it wasn’t Forsberg’s words that made the difference but a forceful speech by Pearn himself during the first intermission. The back story to the Sweden-Canada game is where things were interesting. He was playing with MODO Ornskoldsvik in the top Swedish league and had been drafted 6th overall in 1991, the same draft made famous by Lindros going 1st overall but refusing to play for the team that drafted him, the Quebec Nordiques. But back to that Canada game for a minute. Just 24 hours later, they played Canada and lost, 5-4, but Forsberg was dominant, scoring once and adding three assists, and doing everything in his power to lead his team. They were demoted and haven’t been back to the top pool since. The Swedes won the faceoff and tied the game at 19:53. In that game Forsberg had an assist and Lindros was held off the scoresheet. Sweden opened the ’93 World Juniors with a 4-2 win over Germany, in Gavle.

How to Watch the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship ... (mlive.com)

The final eight in this year's WJC look to take on step closer to the championship on Monday in the Maritimes.

in Group B action, they let it be known that they have what it takes to compete for a medal. Look for the Germans to turn to goaltender Nikita Quapp, who was in net for their win over the Austrians, to give them a chance on Monday. They have a variety of scorers to turn to, especially the unanimous No. Germany is arguably the biggest underdog coming into the quarterfinals, with their 4-2 win over Austria standing as their lone win in the preliminary stage. However, they rallied back with convincing wins over Switzerland and Finland to finish atop Group A, and are eyeing their first semifinal appearance since winning gold in 2021. Thanks to some solid goaltending from Kevin Pasche, and the play of Halifax Moosehead Attilio Biasca, they have been able to pull out wins over Finland and Slovakia, but still ended up fourth in Group B. Czechia stunned everyone when they took down the Canadians, 5-2, on the opening day of the World Juniors. They are hoping to advance to the final four for the second consecutive year. Despite winning three games, the team with talents like Filip Bystedt and Isak Rosen struggled against the likes of Germany and Czechia, before falling to host nation Canada in their final game in Group A, falling to third. This year’s edition of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship has been anything but ordinary.

2023 World Juniors Quarterfinal Preview (The Hockey News)

Tony Ferrari gives an in-depth preview at the eight teams who made it to the world juniors quarterfinal and what each team must do to win their games.

Slovakia has upset teams before, and they know the route to doing so. They have the top two scorers in the tournament in Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven, and they have figured out their goaltending situation as Thomas Milic has come in and settled in the crease. Bedard has been amazing and set and tied some records already, but they will need scoring from everyone on the roster. They won two games in the shootout against Slovakia and Latvia and another in overtime against the Finns. The Canadians were upset once, and the Slovaks won as the underdog once. The only game where they were a cut above their competition was the Austria game, but it wasn’t overwhelming despite coming against a team with ineptitude offensively. The Swedes have as much skill and talent as anyone at this tournament, and they’ve proven to be stable on the back end and solid in net. After an opening-night loss to the Swiss in overtime, they turned their game on, handled a feisty Slovak squad and handled business against Latvia. They have a few key members of their squad that have high-end skills, but they rely heavily on a workmanlike attitude for many of their offensive chances. The Swedes had been one of the tournament’s stronger teams until their game against the Canadians, the only loss they suffered at the world juniors. They will need to continue to score by committee as they’ve done, and a big performance by Joakim Kemell or Brad Lambert wouldn’t hurt, either. The 2023 edition of the World Junior Championship has been one to remember thus far, with records being set, upsets and great games.

Bedard’s 12 assists at a single World Junior Hockey Championship ties the Canadian record with Jason Allison of North York, Ontario, who had 12 helpers at the 1995 World Junior Hockey Championship in Red Deer, Alberta. The only way they have a chance is if he makes a whole heck of a lot of saves for them. That said, Canada's depth and the ability to score in waves is going to be unlike anything Slovakia has seen in the tournament to date. appears to have received the message that they needed to play a heck of a lot better to have a chance. Goaltending can be the difference in any game and Quapp has the ability to steal one. and Latvia before a shootout loss to Switzerland meant finishing third in the group. Scoring has not been a problem for the U.S. He's made some of his team's best overall plays and they're going to need him to find a way to have his best game here. The Czechs certainly have depth on their side and their D corps is a huge separating factor for them in almost any game they play. The Czechs started the tournament with a bang, upsetting Canada and announcing emphatically that they're on the hunt for medals at this tournament. Czechia also has a lot of confidence in its goaltender, Tomas Suchanek, who has played in every game so far. They lost in OT to Switzerland and got rolled over by the U.S. The winner of that series will stay up in the top division for another year, while the other will be relegated to Division 1A for next year.

Servac Petrovsky (Minnesota Wild) scored twice, and Filip Mesar (Montreal Canadiens) and Libor Nemec (2023 draft eligible) each had two assists for Slovakia (2-0-1-1), which finished third and will play Canada in the quarterfinals at Scotiabank Centre on Monday (6:30 p.m. Petrovsky scored his first goal of the tournament on a snap shot from the slot to put Slovakia back in front 2-1 at 17:20. Adam Sykora (New York Rangers) gave Slovakia a 1-0 lead at 4:11 of the first period. Tomas Suchanek (2023 draft eligible) made 18 saves. "I think we just eliminated our turnovers and our making our game a little bit easier, more simple," Spacek said regarding the team's difference from the 2022 WJC in August, when Czechia finished fourth. Bedard also tied Eric Lindros for the most career points at the WJC with 31 (14 goals, 17 assists in 13 games). "[Bedard] is red hot right now, so we're lucky to have him on our side wearing the Maple Leaf," Othmann said. "My dad said some stuff about [Lindros] and how good of a player he was," Bedard said. Obviously, we had a couple of huge blocks there at the end of the game, too." Hughes skated end-to-end before dropping a pass to McGroarty, who scored in the left circle. In the locker room you can tell the boys were ready to go, and it's only going to go up from here.

In the last four tournaments, the Finns have won a gold, a silver, and a bronze. Conversely, the Finns and Swedes have work to do in terms of convincing us that they’ll deliver at crunch time. Canada brings more offence top to bottom, turbo-charged by the Bedard factor, but those stats are also a little bit inflated by the less-than-usual strength of Germany and Austria. Yet in Canada’s 5-2 loss to Czechia, it was Czechia who scored two timely goals with the extra skater, ultimately Canada’s undoing. Finland heads into the quarter-finals at a lacklustre 2-for-11 (18.1 percent) , while Sweden has been even less effective at 2-for-16 (12.5 percent). No matter the score, the fans have gotten behind Austria, inveighing them to score even when a goal would mean little on the scoreboard. It’s easy for him to get overshadowed playing alongside Filip Mesar, the 2022 Montreal first-rounder (26th overall), who is the main offensive catalyst on the line, and Servac Petrovsky, who scored a pair of beauties back-to-back versus Switzerland. To go from never having represented your country in IIHF competition to knocking off the U.S. For the 2023 tournament, Podnieks has been responsible for Group A in Halifax, while Aykroyd has written about Group B in Moncton. AP: The aforementioned Suchanek and Sweden’s Carl Lindbom have been the best in Halifax, I think. And the U.S.’s Trey Augustine has shown hints of doing what John Gibson did for the U.S. LA: Unquestionably, Slovakia’s 6-3 romp over the Americans was the biggest sensation in Moncton.

World Juniors Preview: Canada vs. Slovakia (Hockey Canada)

Joshua Roy scored only 57 seconds into the game, with Brennan Othmann and Tyson Hinds scoring goals of their own to give Canada a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

IIHF - World Junior quarter-finals preview (IIHF)

What to know before FIN-SWE, CZE-SUI, USA-GER, CAN-SVK.

Captain Simon Nemec (1+4=5) has led the blue line and excelled in at both ends. And the reality is that Slovakia’s squandering of the 3-1 lead they built versus Switzerland in their last group game will likely cost them their dream of advancing to the final four. It’s gone 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) in Moncton, second only to Canada (57.1 percent) in Halifax. However, it’s not just about the obvious difficulty of keeping pace offensively with aces like Connor Bedard (6+12=18), Logan Stankoven (2+6=8), or Shane Wright (3+3=6). Who wants the puck more, who plays faster, who goes to the net and puts the dirty goals in. Defenceman Rodwin Dionicio has embodied the never give-up mindset, as he potted the equalizer with under two minutes left in the 3-2 shootout win over Latvia and scored the shootout winner when the Swiss rallied from a 3-1 deficit to top Slovakia 4-3. But regardless, the Czechs should come out on top – unless they fail to play the proverbial full 60 minutes. The forwards, outside of the likes of Filip Bystedt (2+3=5) and Isak Rosen (2+2=4), have underperformed. What the underdog Swiss really have going for them is a willingness to fight to the end. I think it really comes down to who wants it more and who's willing to work for it more: the forecheck, the backcheck, the one-on-one battles. The Finns will need to grit it out. Yet they both faltered against top contenders to end the group stage, with coach Magnus Havelid’s boys losing 5-1 to Canada and coach Tomi Lamsa’s troops falling 6-2 to the Americans.
