Tony Ferrari gives an in-depth preview at the eight teams who made it to the world juniors quarterfinal and what each team must do to win their games.
Slovakia has upset teams before, and they know the route to doing so. They have the top two scorers in the tournament in Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven, and they have figured out their goaltending situation as Thomas Milic has come in and settled in the crease. Bedard has been amazing and set and tied some records already, but they will need scoring from everyone on the roster. They won two games in the shootout against Slovakia and Latvia and another in overtime against the Finns. The Canadians were upset once, and the Slovaks won as the underdog once. The only game where they were a cut above their competition was the Austria game, but it wasn’t overwhelming despite coming against a team with ineptitude offensively. The Swedes have as much skill and talent as anyone at this tournament, and they’ve proven to be stable on the back end and solid in net. After an opening-night loss to the Swiss in overtime, they turned their game on, handled a feisty Slovak squad and handled business against Latvia. They have a few key members of their squad that have high-end skills, but they rely heavily on a workmanlike attitude for many of their offensive chances. The Swedes had been one of the tournament’s stronger teams until their game against the Canadians, the only loss they suffered at the world juniors. They will need to continue to score by committee as they’ve done, and a big performance by Joakim Kemell or Brad Lambert wouldn’t hurt, either. The 2023 edition of the World Junior Championship has been one to remember thus far, with records being set, upsets and great games.

Let this sink in: Connor Bedard has more than twice as many points as anybody else at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Team Canada vs. Neither Calgary Flames prospect participating at the World Juniors made much of an impact on Saturday. “It’s special,” Othmann said. “Start was great,” said head coach Dennis Williams. “That’s how we want to play. “They’re still dangerous. “They’re big, they’re fast, they’re strong,” said the New York Rangers prospect. “A hundred times better,” Othmann said of his team’s improvement since Monday. 31 victory on home soil in eight years, saw the hosts shot out of a cannon in front of an electric and well-lubricated crowd inside a sold-out Scotiabank Centre. “His confidence level, it’s just through the roof right now. Canada, which wore its black jerseys on New Year’s Eve, will face Slovakia in Monday’s quarterfinals, while Sweden is set to take on Finland. “Crazy,” Othmann said. “We’re playing a more complete game. “He’s going to be an outstanding NHL player in the future,” Othmann said.

What to know before FIN-SWE, CZE-SUI, USA-GER, CAN-SVK.
Captain Simon Nemec (1+4=5) has led the blue line and excelled in at both ends. And the reality is that Slovakia’s squandering of the 3-1 lead they built versus Switzerland in their last group game will likely cost them their dream of advancing to the final four. It’s gone 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) in Moncton, second only to Canada (57.1 percent) in Halifax. However, it’s not just about the obvious difficulty of keeping pace offensively with aces like Connor Bedard (6+12=18), Logan Stankoven (2+6=8), or Shane Wright (3+3=6). Who wants the puck more, who plays faster, who goes to the net and puts the dirty goals in. Defenceman Rodwin Dionicio has embodied the never give-up mindset, as he potted the equalizer with under two minutes left in the 3-2 shootout win over Latvia and scored the shootout winner when the Swiss rallied from a 3-1 deficit to top Slovakia 4-3. But regardless, the Czechs should come out on top – unless they fail to play the proverbial full 60 minutes. The forwards, outside of the likes of Filip Bystedt (2+3=5) and Isak Rosen (2+2=4), have underperformed. What the underdog Swiss really have going for them is a willingness to fight to the end. I think it really comes down to who wants it more and who's willing to work for it more: the forecheck, the backcheck, the one-on-one battles. The Finns will need to grit it out. Yet they both faltered against top contenders to end the group stage, with coach Magnus Havelid’s boys losing 5-1 to Canada and coach Tomi Lamsa’s troops falling 6-2 to the Americans.
