MacKenzie Weegar finally notched his first goal as a Flame on Saturday night and it was an important one.

Introducing the two Flames prospects questing for world-junior gold (Calgary Sun)

William Stromgren of Sweden and Topi Ronni of Finland will be facing off against one another in the tournament's quarterfinals.

ICE CHIPS: Calgary Wranglers bench boss Mitch Love has earned the coaching nod for the Pacific Division at the AHL All-Star Classic. Ditto for Jakob Silfverberg of the Anaheim Ducks.) “It’s what every team wants and to get to complete that tournament with a gold, it would be special. For whoever advances, the semifinals are set for Wednesday. “Ray talked with me about that also,” Ronni said. As he put it: “Topi plays a lot older than his age.” He also describes the pivot prospect as a “fitness nut,” so it’s only a matter of time before he’s able to add some bulk to his 6-foot-2, 181-lb. “Frankly, one of the reasons why I think he is on this world-junior team is because he’s rounded his game out. In his first crack at a world-junior medal, he has been working as a bottom-six centre, with zero points and an even rating through four round-robin contests. “I want to just play at my best level — and maybe a little bit more. (The Finns hope to have Ronni in the lineup after he made an early exit during Saturday’s loss to the U.S. “You have to take it all in and when the games start, you have to be ready for it. The Canucks beat the Flames in a couple puck battles and flung the puck to the point. The Canucks came into the third period with a bit of desperation, and took advantage of a bit of defensive zone looseness from the Flames to inch a little closer. He was engaged, boisterous, and in the thick of the action on basically every single shift. Blake Coleman went in on the forecheck, battling one-on-two, and saw a Canuck break a stick on him (and he also lost his own stick in all the chaos). Tyler Toffoli noticed a gap in the defensive coverage in the neutral zone and fired a shot to Elias Lindholm, sending Lindholm and Dillon Dube in on a two-on-one rush. Dries got one back for Vancouver at 15:28 on a strange one, knocking a puck in from waist-level after it had fluttered into the air on one side of the net and came down on the other side where Dries was the first to spot it.

Weegar celebrates new year with first goal in Flames silks to sink ... (Calgary Sun)

If MacKenzie Weegar felt any rush of relief at finally scoring his first goal in a Calgary Flames uniform, he did an awfully good job hiding it.

“I think we’re on the right track,” Lindholm said. They’re now 8-4-2 against divisional rivals this year and finished off a tough 16-game December with an 8-4-4 record. After a stop-and-start first period, the Flames were at their best in the second. In the end, though, Weegar’s goal would stand as the game-winner. They neither burnt out or faded away and instead responded with two goals that made for some nervous moments for the Calgary crowd in the third period. Article content

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames will participate in the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in 2023.

Considering that the Flames-Oilers are still months removed from a playoff series and may very well be fighting each other for a playoff spot by season’s end (or, even better, reignite their feud in the playoffs), the NHL is striking the iron while it’s hot for this rivalry. There is no other logical choice to have at the number one spot on this list. Toffoli was acquired by the Flames on Valentine’s Day 2022. This is one of the more memorable goals in modern Flames history. The Flames had nothing going in this game. This was one of the most fun goals from 2022. We hope to see a lot more goals like this over the next seven seasons. Lindholm does exactly that in this beauty against the Anaheim Ducks. This is one of the most unique goals you will see in the NHL. One of the most disappointing things about losing Gaudreau last off-season was that he finally developed a lethal shot. One of the lost art forms in the NHL today is the slap shot. The Flames also scored a lot of goals in 2022. I had wrote down 27 goals that were worthy of being considered for this list.

Flames Sunday Census: New Year's resolutions for the team - The ... (The Win Column)

Happy New Year, Calgary Flames community! To start off the calendar year of 2023, the Flames are fighting for a playoff spot. It's safe to say that most ...

It is a luxury to have Vladar as a backup goalie, and it seems like the team is finally realizing the potential Vladar has. This led to a lot of weight being placed on Jacob Markstrom the whole year, and it just might have been the reason why Markstrom did not look like himself during the playoff series against the Oilers. If the Flames have aspirations of being a Stanley Cup contender, they have a long road ahead, however, these resolutions could be the steps that get the Flames on track. It will be very interesting to see what the team does come the trade deadline. Hockey is a physical game, but it seems like the franchise has completely forgotten that in order to win games, players need to be able to score a goal every now and then. This is a big need as the team is slow and scoring goals does not come easy with this group. There have been times where Vladar was the only reason the Flames even still stood a chance in games. The course of action that makes the most sense would be to call either up and put them in the top-six to see if they have the ability to keep up. Well to keep it short and simple, [Milan Lucic](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/l/lucicmi01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_hr) is currently on a line with [Jonathan Huberdeau](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/huberjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_hr) in the top-six, whereas [Matthew Phillips](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/p/phillma01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-01-01_hr) has been sent back to the AHL after a whopping 18 minutes of ice time. The team seems like they are still trying to figure out what line combinations work best, but there have also been some questionable decisions that have been made so far during the season. It’s safe to say that most people did not expect to see the team in this position so far into the year. However, with significant roster changes, come big adjustments that the players, coaching staff, and franchise as a whole, need to get used to.
