Three of TCU’s wins came after scores with less than two minutes remaining or in overtime. The Horned Frogs (12-1), meanwhile, led a charmed season until their luck ran out in an overtime loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 title game. The talent gap between the two teams is vast, and motivation does not seem to be an issue for Alabama, as it has been in the past when the Crimson Tide doesn’t make the College Football Playoff. Kansas State (10-3) ended TCU’s hopes of an undefeated season with its upset in the Big 12 title game. Two slow offenses (Iowa ranks 96th in seconds per play, and Kentucky ranks 129th). Carrington Valentine, a two-year starter at cornerback, has opted out. That, and defenses that allowed 14.4 (Iowa) and 19.1 (Kentucky) points per game. After weeks of more or less meaningless bowl games, we finally get to the part of the postseason schedule when things really matter: Saturday’s College Football Playoff semifinals.

I went 6-4 against the spread during Championship Week, putting me two games over .500 for the season. Here are my guesses for the rest of the bowl games.

Smart not only has a plan on how to approach the next four weeks, he has the team to do it. That OSU team had the pieces to win it all; this one gets another glorious chance have to prove the pieces are still in place. The Buckeyes' reward for sliding into the field? Ohio State got a mulligan by sliding into the field at the last minute.

The Fiesta Bowl was a wild College Football Playoff dominated by offensive fireworks and ended with TCU getting past Michigan to reach the title game.

And playing the Wolverines is a great introduction to what the Frogs would face against Georgia, for example, even if the Bulldogs seem to be on a different level than Michigan. But one thing won't change: TCU will again be the underdog, and maybe by a double-digit margin should the Bulldogs race past the Buckeyes. Throughout this magical year, TCU has leaned on Duggan to carry the load on offense; once again, he stepped up with a Heisman-worthy performance. He also played a huge part in the running game, as expected. In the end, a team known for winning close games was prepared for Michigan's inevitable comeback. For Michigan, the loss is a stunning blow after completing one of the most impressive regular season in program history.
