Sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that the Raiders made this move in part to maintain Carr's health and keep their options open this offseason, including for a potential trade. Carr, who holds virtually every passing record in franchise history, had signed a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension in the spring, but he could be cut for a $5.625 million salary-cap hit if the move is made within three days of the Super Bowl.

In the AFC, he'll get a chance to prove he's still got it against young guns Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Josh Allen and Joe Burrow. Zielger will have ample financial resources and draft capital (11 picks) under Mark Davis to upgrade the offensive line and defense. Las Vegas should be aggressive in pursuing him, given that he can quickly flip it into a playoff team with a supporting cast of Davante Adams, Darren Waller, Hunter Renfrow and Josh Jacobs. Carr's benching is a firm indication that the Raiders are looking to replace him with a real upgrade. Returning to New England or going to hometown San Francisco has been the popular speculation, but Las Vegas is a hotter spot now. McDaniels will turn to Jarrett Stidham against the 49ers and Chiefs.

Either that or they could swing a three-team deal with the Cardinals that sends Murray elsewhere, gives Arizona Carr and gives the Raiders a boatload of draft picks. Carr may not be a perfect fit for the Buccaneers' pass-happy offense, but he would have plenty of weapons at his disposal to find success in 2023. Even if he isn't the best quarterback available on the market, he is a viable starting option. The Cardinals could already be regretting the contract that they gave to Kyler Murray, especially after the quarterback tore his ACL against the Patriots. The Buccaneers could lose Tom Brady to free agency after the season and if they do, they may want to find a veteran quarterback capable of keeping their playoff chances afloat. The Saints are another team that has a connection to Carr, albeit a shorter one than that of Del Rio. The Raiders might not glaringly stand out as a team that would want to do that given the rumors that they are cash-poor. Sam Darnold has actually been solid in his opportunities during the 2022 season, but he is set to be a free agent after the season. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and has been benched in favor of Mike White, who is set to be a free agent. Indianapolis could look to break that cycle if it lands an early draft pick, but if not, Carr could be of interest to them. The Jets may prefer to pursue Jimmy Garoppolo, but Carr certainly wouldn't be a bad fallback option. It's no secret that the Jets are going to be looking for a quarterback during the 2023 NFL offseason.

Raiders bench Derek Carr: Answering questions on Vegas' QB future (ESPN)

Carr has been the face of the Raiders' franchise for nearly nine seasons, but does this move start the breakup process for him and the team?

Davis is more invested in the coach than the quarterback. And if Stidham plays well, then that would be a good problem to have in this scenario, no? [New England Patriots](/nfl/team/_/name/ne/new-england-patriots) this past offseason after being taken in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of Auburn, where he had transferred after beginning his college career at Baylor. Critics have said Carr, who has thrown for 3,522 passing yards with 24 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in 2022 while registering a 56.2 QBR, has not been the same since suffering a broken right ankle in the penultimate game of the 2016 season. Fans either loved him to the point of defending any sling or arrow cast in his direction, or loathed him to the point of blaming him for literally everything that went wrong in his nine seasons under center. One working theory has Brady, who is intimately familiar with McDaniels' system, having played for him for the better part of two decades in New England, coming to Las Vegas as a stopgap. Personnel-wise, McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler have to make a call on Pro Bowl running back He understands the scenario that we're in and the situation and is very supportive of the two young guys. So putting Carr in bubble wrap for the last two games at least keeps that guarantee-for-injury factor at bay. Even as McDaniels said there was no "finality" to the decision. And if Carr were to get injured in these last two games, his $32.9 million salary for next season and $7.5 million of his salary for 2024 would become guaranteed. "I am a Raider for my entire life.

The Raiders want a closer look at Jarrett Stidham, but that's probably not actually the case.

Raiders bench Derek Carr for Jarrett Stidham: What's next for QB ... (CBSSports.com)

Though unlikely to make the 2022 NFL playoffs, the Raiders are not mathematically eliminated from contention entering Week 17 against the 49ers.

[Andy Dalton](/nfl/players/1125961/andy-dalton/)and [Jameis Winston](/nfl/players/1998197/jameis-winston/)figure to be playing elsewhere in 2023, and while their cap situation is always a mess, they don't exactly have the ammo to easily grab a top QB prospect in the draft, having traded away their first-rounder. [started 91 consecutive games](https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1608182026267402240) for the Raiders, the longest active streak by any QB in the [NFL](/nfl/). Seattle feels more likely to invest in a young QB with one of its top picks, but with a lot of cap space, maybe they double-dip at the position, as they did years ago when first adding [Russell Wilson](/nfl/players/1272242/russell-wilson/). [Giants](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/NYG/new-york-giants/)fans buying into [Daniel Jones](/nfl/players/2179245/daniel-jones/)' future won't like this, and truth be told, Jones at 25 may well be the better bet for a transitioning New York roster. [Per NFL Media](https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1608225646689521665), Carr will step away for the final two games of the regular season to avoid distractions. Even so, coach Josh McDaniels is making a change at quarterback, announcing Wednesday that [Derek Carr](/nfl/players/1664819/derek-carr/) has been benched for backup [Jarrett Stidham](/nfl/players/2180697/jarrett-stidham/) for the remainder of the year. [Mac Jones](/nfl/players/2741202/mac-jones/), who wouldn't have to be dumped even if Carr were acquired, but Bill Belichick is surely getting a little impatient when it comes to getting proven QB production post-Tom Brady. Carr has been at least an average starter for much of his career, often drawing high marks for his leadership amid multiple regime changes, but he's also logged just a single playoff appearance in almost a decade in silver and black. With the possibility of having two picks in the top 40 — plus whatever they retrieve for Carr — they have a great opportunity to quickly reload where they’re lacking on the line and with their defense. Carr wasn’t benched because he was bad—if he were truly bad he would be the backup, not completely inactive—but because in Davis’ eyes, he’s bad and expensive. When he was extended in April, he only gets $24.9 million in guarantees instead of the $121.5 million that gets written in tweets and jokes made about Carr. Carr has withstood the toughest of times with the Raiders. Was it when Josh McDaniels was hired as head coach, ushering in a new era of Raiders football that was supposed to mimic the Patriot Way? So, Davis brings in Patriot acolytes McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler, and lets them make the decision with Carr. Carr himself has posted career lows in yards per attempt and completion percentage while also having a career high interception rate.
