They didn’t yield a single goal while on the ice, and at the end of the day, that’s the goal of any defenceman. The Vancouver Canucks made the most of their opportunities tonight, playing with a complete effort from their own zone out. Playing behind a group that is actually organized in their own zone makes a night and day difference for most netminders, and this was the case against the Sharks. Of course, Lazar bore the brunt of the statistical impact, but Garland couldn’t escape the black hole that is JT Miller as a centre. Lazar’s lack of possession didn’t lead to a goal against while he was on the ice, but everything else wasn’t pretty as he gave up 12 scoring chances against, putting up a 0.23 xGF while giving up a 0.87 xGA. This demonstrates a remarkable ability to work the puck to the front of the net, taking and getting their opportunities in great spots. It was an excellent showing on both ends, with Pederson’s xGA being the 4th least (0.4) and his xGF (1.28) being the fourth best. Giving up one singular hot patch on the inside of the right faceoff circle — and not a very concentrated or big one either — is a mark of a good night in their own end. The only issue is that because Vancouver built up such a lead in the first period, it was hard to really pull anything into their side of the chart. This is a result of team defence stepping up when needed, with the forwards tracking back into their own end and not losing their coverage. That efficiency proved to be a key theme throughout this matchup, where the Canucks made their chances count and San Jose didn’t. After the first period, the Sharks really took it up a notch.

The Canucks have a much more difficult schedule in January, with nine of 13 games against teams currently above the playoff bar. Neither Demko nor Spencer Martin have put up good numbers this season, at least when it comes to save percentage. However, the former Canucks starter can also be resilient to steal victories. Jacob Markstrom has done that too often this season — including two goals on two shots in a 34-second span of the opening two minutes Dec. However, the Jets can be vulnerable. “The game plan was to go north,” said Jets bench boss Rick Bowness. A chip-and-chase mantra allowed the speedy visitors to get the opposition on its heels and looking a lot like Pacman in trying to move out of the defensive zone. After the game, LeBron openly said this isn't the level of a team he wants to play on as he isn't motivated to play basketball unless it's winning basketball. Entering Week 17, Graham has nine sacks on the year, one away from making the Eagles the first team in NFL history to have four players record ten or more sacks in a season. Dating back to his days as the then-Oakland Raiders head coach from 2012-14, Allen has not proved to be a successful head coach in the NFL. Any team looking to bring Payton in would have to send draft compensation to the Saints in a trade. Small forward Kelly Oubre Jr., Charlotte Hornets Averaging 20.6 points, Oubre is wasting away on a Hornets team that is only contending for the first pick in the draft. The Lakers' loss to the Miami Heat tonight followed a similar path as most of their losses, where the team is close in battle until LeBron subs out and the team collapses. According to Saints insider Nick Underhill, "it would be a surprise" if Allen didn’t return to the Saints in 2023. For Allen and Co., this could be the culmination to what has been a disastrous campaign in New Orleans in the first season since Sean Payton’s resignation. Naturally, the possibility of Payton returning to the Saints has surfaced with widespread suggestions that the Super Bowl-winning head coach is looking to turn in his Fox Sports analyst duties for a headset after just one season. MLB began its enforcement already by measuring the infield dirt at every stadium this year, and only one was found to be in violation: MLB officials recently began measuring the depth of infield dirt in all 30 parks. To this point in his career, Lane Pederson's NHL career hasn't amounted to much. After going undrafted, the Arizona Coyotes signed Pederson out of the WHL ...
And through three games playing with Pettersson, Pederson has been more than fine, registering two assists and even scoring a goal. This increased opportunity led directly to Pederson tallying 17 goals and seven assists through just 18 games with Abbotsford, which as you may have guessed, caught the eye of the big club. Agent Dan Milstein has said he may need the full season to determine a value on Kuzmenko as a potential UFA. The Canucks maneuvered themselves into a corner on Horvat; they can’t afford to lose another prime top-six forward in Kuzmenko. Miller ahead of Horvat before the season, which tightened the budget on Horvat while management believed they had secured in Miller the Canucks’ No. If a trade occurs, it will be regime-defining -- a deal that could set the franchise up or back for years. They’re going to continue to improve their defensive play incrementally while scoring piles of goals and win enough games to make the playoffs after starting the season 0-5-2. 1 (putting the Canucks in the hands of career minor-leaguer Spencer Martin), the dysfunction between coach Bruce Boudreau and president Jim Rutherford, injuries and all the drama surrounding the team, it’s not hard to imagine a formidable team in 2023 if the organization can just sort a couple of problems.

It will likely be on the radar for other NCAA free agents that the Canucks attempt to recruit this spring as well. The versatile, tough-as-nails welterweight hasn’t been an everyday player for the club this season and this isn’t likely to be a front-burner negotiation for the team ahead of the trade deadline. More performances like those this team put in against Edmonton and San Jose on either side of the Christmas break would go a long way toward keeping Boudreau behind the Canucks bench through 82 games this season. Schenn’s been a tremendous fit in an outsized role since returning to Vancouver ahead of the 2021-22 season, and has earned a ton of respect from his teammates, coaches and Canucks management with the way he plays on the ice and carries himself off of it. The Canucks are in regular touch with McDonough. If a reasonable compromise can be found, however, the Canucks would like to find a way to keep Burroughs with his hometown team beyond this season. And the Canucks aren’t likely to contend this season. It would seem a natural time — particularly if the Canucks are still hanging around in the Western Conference playoff picture — for both sides to sit down and take one last kick at the can. The Abbotsford Canucks are playing well, both Höglander and Podkolzin have been able to put in work with Henrik and Daniel Sedin, and the environment is a positive one. The market has shifted in Horvat’s favour significantly, making a long-term extension a prohibitive proposition for the Canucks to consider — especially given that relief from the flat cap era may be another cycle away from being realized. The good news just keeps rolling in for Travis Dermott, here at the tail-end of 2022. Dermott welcomed his first child to the world late last week, ...
For now, Dermott receives probably the steadiest partner he could ask for, and that makes sense coming off such a lengthy absence. If this season has taught us anything, it’s that the Vancouver blueline is very much a fluid situation. Just to mix things up, Bear should probably occasionally give his spot up to Dermott in the near future. Bear has been subjected to a couple of healthy scratches lately, and that decision hasn’t proven too popular with the fans or members of the local media. Despite being the Canucks’ worst defender in virtually every statistical category, Stillman somehow keeps managing to make it into the lineup on most nights, whether through appreciation of his physical play or the old sunk-cost fallacy. For one, if Myers were going to be scratched for his gaffes and his lapses in defensive awareness, he’d have been scratched long ago. There’s just no feasible scenario in which Schenn gets scratched, for Dermott or for anyone else. But options, in general, are something that the Canucks have in abundance, and if there’s one thing their blueline isn’t suffering from, it’s lack of personnel. Ad Advertisement Dermott may not be a flawless defender, but based on his body of work in both Toronto and Vancouver last season, he’s probably going to consistently be one of the Canucks’ best six options on a nightly basis moving forward — so long as he can stay healthy this time around. A few days later, Dermott’s AHL conditioning stint would be terminated early as he was recalled back up to Vancouver, with the presumed intention of getting him into the NHL lineup as soon as possible after an extended concussion-related absence.
Vancouver Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau says defenceman Travis Dermott will be an option to play Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks.
